Occurence of Soldier Bug (Spilostethus pandurus)
in Van Province (Turkey)
(Hemiptera, Lygaeidae)
Muhabbet Kemal Ahmet Omer KoQak
Within the frame of the Cesa Project entitled Entomofauna of Turkey (Eiy, the following
Soldier Bug {Spilostethus pandurus) is reported from Van Province (East Turkey) for the first time.
This species feeds on many herbaceous plant species. It sucks the plant juices usually from stems
and fruits.
The species is widely distributed from South Europe, to Namibia in Africa, and South East
Asia. Information on the distribution of this species in Turkey is rather incomplete. According to
OzsaraQ & Kiyak (2001)^ the species is found in the Aegean, Marmara, Middle Anatolia, West Black
Sea, and West Mediterranean regions of Turkey. In East Turkey, it is known only from Elazig.
Range of the species is illustrated below (Map 1).

On the Agrochola consueta (H.-Sch.) in East Turkey
{Lepidoptera, Noctuidae)
Muhabbet Kemal Ahmet Omer Ko^ak
The species was originally described by Herrich-Schaffer in 1852 as Orthosia consueta
from the vicinity Istanbul. The species is currently placed in the genus Agrochola Hbn and in the
subgenus Anchoscelis, In Anchoscelis, totally 18 species are known in Turkey. Among them, the
species consueta H.-Sch. is recorded in Siirt Province for the first time. With this record, totally
number of Agrochola species in Siirt Province raised to six, namely, Agrochola egorovi O. Bang-
Haas, A. consueta H.-Sch., A. imitata Ronkay, A. sairtana Derra, A. mansueta H.-Sch., and A.
pistacina Goeze (=#lychnidis Denis & Schiff.).
In the spring of this year, the first author recorded a caterpillar of this species in northern
Siirt, §irvan district, Hesko stream at 975m (Fig. 1). The caterpillar was captured on 24 April (Fig.
2). Pre-pupa stage seems to have a long period, from 30 April to 21 September under the
laboratory conditions (Fig. 3). The specimen pupated on 21 September (Figs. 4-5). Adult female
emerged on 29 October, 2008 (Fig. 6).
Regarding to this species, the studies are still continuing. Explanatory images of the habitat,
caterpillar and adult moth of the species are given below:
