Occurences of two Epicauta species in Asia
with some notes {Coleoptera, Meloidae)
Muhabbet Kemal Ahmet Omer Ko^ak
Within the frame of the Cesa Project entitled Entomofauna of Old World (EOW)S the
following Epicauta species are reported from KuQukku§tay, Tekes (Uighur Ili)^, and Chiang Rai
(North Thailand).
Epicauta Redtenbacher,i845
Epicauta Redtenbacher 1845, Gatt. dtsch. Kafer-Fauna, 133.
Epicauta waterhousei (Haag-Rutenberg,i88o) (Fig.i) (Map 1)
This species is distributed in Thailand, Taiwan, etc. and recorded as pest on groundnut,
soybean, eggplants, tomato, and slender amaranth (Amaranthus viridis). In Thailand it is known in
Central and Northeast provinces. The present record from the vicinity of Chiang Rai, Huay San 530m,
is based upon the authors expedition on 29 April,20o6 in North Thailand.
The adult of this species is easily recognized by its dull black elytra with a greyish longitudinal
stripe, extending from humeral angle towards apex of elytron, and red head without black dorsal
markings.

2 The territory of Uighur Hi is currently recognized politically by P.R.C. as Uighur Autonomous Region. In our scientific publications, this
territory is defined geographically as Uighur Hi (means Uighur country), where the Uighur people live. See also

This species was described and named by Pallas in 1771. In some recent publications, date of
the publication of erythrocephala was reported erroneously as "1776" or "1781".

(Cesa)
This species is known from Bulgaria, Turkey, Caucasus, and South Russia (Kaszab,i952 4;
Ozbek & Szaloki,i998); Uzbekistan, Kazakstan^. The present faunal information is based upon the
material recorded in Uighur Hi, Tekes, KuQukku§tay 1800m, 10 8 2005 by the authors. This species is
apparently new to the fauna of Uighur Hi.
The adult of this species resembles to the previous one, but easily distinguishable from it by
the presence of the median black stripe on the head, and greyish median stripe on the pronotum.

Thailand for Epicauta waterhousei; red squares show previous records of Epicauta erythrocephala, blue
square shows new record in Uighur Hi.
