Abstract: On the Pyralidae of Bahgesaray district, with some eco-faunistical and taxonomical
notes (Van Province, East Turkey) C Lepidoptera ). Priamus 14 (4): 161 - 245, 111 figs., 62 maps.

This paper deals with the Pyralidae of Bahgesaray. Totally 116 taxa are listed faunistically for the
first time, together with synonyms, original references, and range in codes. Among them 23 species
are recorded new to the fauna of Van Province. Following acts are realized here for the first time:
The illustrations of the behaviours of several species in the nature and the tympanal organs of a
significant number of species. Totally 62 maps of the species are prepared according to their
distributional codes. The correctness of the lectotype designation of Bradyrrhoa mesobaphella is
discussed. A new subgenus, Kasikoparania is established. Taxonomical evaluations of the
following, possibly taxa will be separately studied: Bradyrrhoa sp., Catoptria sp., Episcythrastis
sp., Faveria sp., Khorassania sp., Loxostege sp., Phycita sp., Polyocha sp., Psorosa sp., and
Pyrausta sp.

Key words: Pyralidae, Lepidoptera, fauna, genitalia, tympanal organs, morphology, behaviour,
taxonomy, description, Bahgesaray, Van, Turkey.

Bahgesaray has been the focus of several faunistic studies by the authors in the last
year, recording at least 870 species in total. 2 3 Within the private Cesa Projects, “Diversity of the
Lepidoptera in the World (DLW)” 3 , “Entomofauna of Turkey (ET)” 4 , Tympanal Morphology of the
Pyralidae (Lepidoptera) (TMP) 5 , and “Mapping of the Lepidoptera of Old World (MLO)” 6 7 , the
Pyralidae of Bahgesaray district is studied here for the first time.

The first comprehensive list of the Pterygota fauna of Van province has been published by
the authors (Kogak & Kemal, 2012). Similarly, regional studies in the Van Province have been
carried out by the authors and published (Kemal & Kogak, 2014, 2016a, 2016b, 2016c). In the
previous parts of Bahgesaray fauna, the authors published the first faunal information of the
Pterygota (Kemal & Kogak, 20i6d; Kemal, Kogak & Ecer, 2016; Kemal, Hakan, Kogak & Tekin,
2016). Recently, the Noctuidae, Geometridae and other Macro-Heterocera families of Bahgesaray
district have been studied. Thus, 317 species of Lepidoptera have been evaluated and listed so far
(Kemal & Kogak, 20i6e- 20i6g).

In the present paper, more than 1000 specimens of the Pyralidae 7 from Bahgesaray are
studied. All the species are identified by the authors. Meanwhile, some results of the thesis on the
Pyralidae of Mutki are also used (Akm, 2014). Specifically indetermined species, Bradyrrhoa sp.,
Catoptria sp., Episcythrastis sp., Faveria sp., Khorassania sp., Loxostege sp., Phycita sp.,
Polyocha sp., Psorosa sp. and Pyrausta sp. will be studied separately. Most of them might be new
species to the science.

Faunistically, 116 pyralid species are listed here together with the synonyms, original
references, and updated distributional information in codes. Totally 23 pyralid species are recorded
as new to the fauna of Van Province. Now, the total examined moth species of Bahgesaray district
rose to 432.

Most of the species recorded in the district are nocturnal. The daily activity of some
crambids like Agriphila, Chrysocr ambus, and some other pyralids, Nomophila, Ephelis, Cynaeda,
Pyrausta are both nocturnal and diurnal, as well as crepuscular. Among the species of Pyrausta,
obfuscata and amatalis are frequently observed on the muddy places during sunny and hot
middays, together with some male blue butterflies (Figs. 1, 23); the latter Pyrausta species is rarer
than the former.

The commonest species in the district is Nomophila noctuella. It is also widely distributed
in the world (Map. 38). According to our present knowledge, there are also some pyralids that
confined to the mountainous regions of East Turkey. For example, Bradyrrhoa mesobaphella
(Van, Igdir provinces), Catoptria hilarella (Kahramanmara§, Van provinces), Megasis kocaki
(Bitlis, Van provinces), Phycita kurdistanella (Van province).

Morphologically, the male genitalia, if exists with the coremata, of the following 30 species
are prepared and illustrated here: Acrobasis consociella, A. dulcella, Agriphila tolli, Anarpia
incertalis, Ancylolomia pectinatella, Arsissa divaricella, Bradyrrhoa mesobaphella (both sexes),
B. gilveolella, Catoptria hilarella, C. pinella, Hypochalcia ahenella, Mecyna biternalis,
Merulempista cingillella, Pediasia matricella, Pempeliella sororiella, Phycita kurdistanella, P.
poteriella, P. spissicella, Phycitodes albatella, Polyocha transversariella, Psorosa maraschella,
Pyrausta despicata, P. neglectalis, P. obfuscata, P. purpuralis, P. sanguinalis, Scoparia subfusca,
Sefidia clasperella, Sitochroa straminealis, Syrianarpia mendicalis. The genitalic structures are
used for the precise identification of the species. Complementarily, the tympanal organs of some
species are prepared and illustrated here for the first time. Similarly, 25 tympanal preparats are
prepared and illustrated first in this paper. These are: Acrobasis consociella, A. dulcella, Agriphila
tolli, Anarpia incertalis, Ancylolomia pectinatella, Bradyrrhoa mesobaphella, B. gilveolella,
Hypochalcia ahenella, Merulempista cingillella, Pediasia matricella, Pempeliella sororiella,
Phycita kurdistanella, P. poteriella, P. spissicella, Phycitodes albatella, Polyocha transversariella,
Psorosa maraschella, Pyrausta despicata, P. neglectalis, P. obfuscata, P. purpuralis, P.
sanguinalis, Sefidia clasperella, Sitochroa straminealis, Syrianarpia mendicalis. Detailed

2 While, the total species number of the Pyralidae of Turkey was 663, Lepidoptera species of Turkey increased to 5511.

evaluation of this organ will be studied later. For this purpose, some basic publications, like Minet
(1982, 1983), Maes (1985) will be taken into consideration.

To some taxa, taxonomic comments of the authors on the validity of some scientific names,
lectotype selection are given. A new subgenus to the science is also established here, in accordance
with the rules of the ICZN.

Totally 62 maps of the species are prepared for this paper according to their distributional

codes.

All the preparations, and the photographs belong to the first author (in the archive Cesa).
The materials are preserved in the Cesa collection, Ankara 8 .

New to the fauna of Van Province.

Remarks: There are several applications and attributions that we have difficulty in
understanding.

Ragonot (1888) described “Bradyrrhoa mesobaphella” on page 26 in his original publication
and based upon the male, collected from “Armenie russe” (see below).

Later, Ragonot (1893: 552-553) mentioned a description of female, with the information of a
male specimen from Kasikoparan in the Romanoffs collection. But yet, the original type-series of
Bradyrrhoa mesobaphella consists of a single male only, mentioned in the description by Ragonot
(1888: 26). Further information on the new material, cited 5 years later, cannot be included to the
type-series.

Roesler (1993: 83) designated 1$, preserved in MNHN, Paris (coll. Ragonot). He also added
“Kasikoparan” as the locus typicus of Bradyrrhoa mesobaphella in the 'Russisch Armenien”. Since
1923, Kasikoparan is a Turkish village above Gaziler (=Kulp) in the Province Igdir (NE Turkey).

Three questions : Ragonot described mesobaphella on a male only ( loco citato ); Roesler
designated a female as Lectotype 10 . (l) How this selection and designation can be possible? (2)
Where are the rest of the original series, i.e. paralectotypes? Roesler mentioned also the number of
the material studied as “1$” only. Roesler stated contrary to Ragonot: “ das 3 ist unbekannt”. (3)
How can be explained scientifically this discrepancy?

It seems that Roesler wasnot serious enough during his taxonomical evaluation on Bradyrrhoa
mesobaphella. Furthermore, Leraut (2014: 170) illustrated this lectotype $ from “Central Asia
(Kasikoparan)”. He clearly confused on these two geographical territories, Transcaucasus and
Central Asia.

As to the identification of Bradyrrhoa mesobaphella Rag., the unique specimen in the museums
of the world, can be used, is the female specimen in the Ragonot’s collection (MNHN, Paris),
published by Ragonot (1888) as male, so-called by Roesler (1993) as female lectotype.

Our material from Bahgesaray on this species consists of one male and one female. The
characters of the female genitalia (Fig. 49) fits well to Roesler’s schematic drawing (Taf. 51 fig.16).
As to the male genitalia and the coremata, especially the characters of the valva differ from all
known Bradyrrhoa species very much (Fig. 46). The tympanal organs of the male (Figs. 47, 48)
are illustrated here for the first time. After taking these structural features into consideration, we
came to the conclusion that mesobaphella should be placed in an other generic group. Therefore,
we propose a distinct subgenus, Kasikoparania with the following diagnostic characters:

Bradyrrhoa Zeller, 1848

Type-species: Phycis gilveolella Treitschke,i833, by subsequent designation by Ragonot (1893:
550).

Kasikoparania (subgen.n.)

http: / / zoobank.org/NomenclaturalActs/ 83CA27E6-DFEE-4B46-834C-F5DQ07DQ2C83

Type-species: Bradyrrhoa mesobaphella Ragonot, 1888, here designated.

Diagnosis (mentioned in italics):

Male genitalia: Uncus oblong, round at apex. Scaphium oblong , distinct from that of gilveolella. Gnathos
small , roundish , with small and short terminal spine. Valva thick , stout , distal end round. Costa thick , well-
developed , horn-shaped , shorter than valva. No chitinous process in the middle as in gilveolella. Sacculus
large, well-chitinized. Vinculum narrower at base. Aedeagus possesses two different chitinous part , smooth
and dentate. Cornutus very short , V4 of aedeagus. Coremata differs greatly from gilveolella .

Female genitalia: Similar to that of gilveolella , but bursa copulatrix much longer .

External features: $. Forewing 12mm, wingspan: 27mm. $. Forewing 12.5mm, wingspan: 28mm. No
significant feature between sexes. Upperside forewing dark yellowish. Median area slightly darker. Dark
brown spots at anal area typical. Ciliae slightly darker. Hindwing yellowish grey, ciliae paler. Underside
forewing: Median part dark brown. Hindwing underside similar, but paler brown. Head, thorax and
abdomen yellowish (Figs. 44, 45).

Etymology : The name of the subgenus is attributed to the type locality of the type-species, Kazikoparan
(NE Turkey).

Material studied : 1 $. Van Pr., Bahgesaray, Liman, Populetum 2320m, 7 8 2016 (GP2499). 1$.
Bahgesaray, Krapet Pass 2820m, 7 8 2016 (GP2500) (coll. Cesa).

10 Comment of the authors: Lectotype is a specimen later selected to serve as the single name bearing type specimen for the species,
which is originally described from a number of the specimens (type-series) of syntypes, or co-types. In other words, if a species described
on a single specimen, it may be called simply as “type”, “monotype”, or “holotype”. It cannot be designated later as “Lectotype” in a
publication.

sciences. Zootaxa 4196 (3): 435-445.

Many Denis & Schiffermiiller’s names in the Lepidopterology were published without description, simply as nomen nudum, and they
are currently used as valid name (!). Are the valid nomina nuda less harmful than the photography-based names in the biological
sciences?

It occurs at various habitats of the mountain steppe. Diurnal to nocturnal, common in the
summer. New to the fauna of Van Province.

Remark: The validity of this species was proposed by Slamka (2013). Due to the external
similarity, in the past Pyrausta virginalis and neglectalis were confused in Turkey. Therefore, the
virginalis- like individuals will be re-examined by the authors firstly in East Turkey.
