JOHN PAYNE

(Captain China)

Upon graduating from

school in his home town
of Roanoke, Virginia, John
Pajne enrolled at the Uni-
versity of Virginia. He be-
came interested in campus
theatricals and later trans-
ferred to the drama school
at Columbia University. . . .
While working at the Uni-
versity's McMillan Theatre,
Payne was offered a job as
stock player for the Shuberts
at $50 a week. He took it,

and while playing with
Beatrice Lillie in "At Home
Abroad," he was offered »
film contract by Goldwyn.
, . . After completing a ffem-
pictures his contract expired
and he signed with Para-
mount. . . . During his film
career he has starred with,
the top names of Movieland.
. . . He is married to Gloria
DeHa'ven and they have two
children.

GAIL RUSSELL

(Kim Mitchell)
Make way for a Cinderella
story to end all Cinderella
stories. It's the saga of Gail
Russell. One day she was
just another Santa Monica
high school student. The
next, she was a screen act-
ress. Today she is one of
Paramount's most popular
stars. . . . Gail never even
thought of a motion picture
career. It was all decided for

her as a result of the chance
meeting of William Meikle-
john, supervisor of talent
and casting at Paramount,
and two youthful hitch-
hikers. The boys raved about
a real beauty in their school
and gave Meiklejohn her
name. Following a hunch, he
phoned her. She made a test,
signed a term contract and,
much to . her amazement,
found herself an actress over-
night. . . . On the personal

side, Gail wears sport clothes
and suits almost exclusively

that's

JEFFREY LYNN

( Breudenson )

wanted to act. That may
seem strange to a lot of fans
who always read about their
Hollywood favorites wanting
to act since the day they saw
■'their first movie as a child.
Jeff never thought of acting
until he became a dramatics
teacher. . . . And his first
acting job didn't bring too
much applause from the fans
or rave notices from the
Jeffrey Lynn didn't know he critics. In fact, Mr. Lynn

moii i even get billing. You
see, his first role was that
of a Salvation Army Santa
Claus. . . . He's progressed
considerably since then, and
in "Captain China" he plays
one of his most dynamic
dramatic roles. . . .. During
the war he served as a Com-
bat Intelligence Officer. . . .
Ht* is married to his child-
hood sweetheart, Robin
Chandler.

MICHAEL O'SHEA

(Trask)
The background of Michael
O'Shea, of the lead fists and
the red hair, is as varied as
the parts he has played on
the screen. . . . Not one to
vegetate in any one spot,
O'Shea boasts •& variety of
jobs — prior to undertaking
a film career — which range
from cabin boy at sea to
bricklayer ashore. , , . Al-
ways motivated by one de-

sire, to be a paid performer,
Mike began bis theatrical
career almost in swaddling
clothes. . . . Born in Man-
hattan, the son of a black*
smith, he got his first taste
of show business when he
organized a neighborhood
kids orchestra — "0'Shea*s
Stationary Gypsies." Second
step up the ladder was a
stunt as a "fast-talk" man
for a carnival. . . . After this
be did numerous radio pro-

grams and stage plays before
he went to Hollywood. . , .

He's married to screen beau-
ty Virginia Mayo.,

On the screen Loo Chaney
is a tough guy. In private

life he is known as a swell
fellow and one of the most
popular "Joes" in Holly-
wood. . . . Like his renowned
father, Lon is carrying on
the famous tradition of con-
tributing grotesque and
frightening roles ts the
screen. . . . He was born in
Oklahoma City, Okla., where
his parents, the late Lon
Chaney Sr. and Cleva
Creighton were playing stock
engagements. At birth, he

weighed only three pounds.
Now he stands six feet, three
inches and weighs slightly
over 200 -pounds. . . . He got
hig break in films when a
casting director saw him and
suggested he go into pictures.
After doing numerous bit
parts he got his first big
chance in "Of Mice and
Men." . . . Lon's hobbies in-
clude hunting and fishing.
. . . He lives in a residence-
ranch home iu the valley.

EDGAR BERGEN

(Mr. Haasvelt)
When producers William
Pine and William Thomas
asked Edgar Bergen for his
services to co-star in "Cap-
tain China," the famous
comedian read the script and
accepted immediately. Ber-
gen packed Charlie McCar-
thy away in his trunk and
started a single act before
the cameras. "Tin anxious to
establish myself as a straight

character actor," he reason- hat. He started out as a news-
ed. "I want to do parts that boy, but over the year* dc-
require character make-up
and odd wardrobes." . . .
Although Charlie, does not
appear with Bergen in "Cap-
tain China," a Bergen piece
wouldn't be complete with-
out some information on the
imp. He has the appearance
of a twelve-year-old boy. He
weighs forty pounds, wears
a size 4 in clothes, size 2 veloped into a wit and a
triple-A shoes, and a 3 3/8 ladies' man.
