THE HAMMOND ORGAN CO., 4200 W. DIVERSEY AVE., CHICAGO 39, ILLINOIS
No. 24
January and February, 1955
SINCE 1951 MORE THAN 1200 SELECTIONS OF MUSIC
HAVE BEEN ESPECIALLY ARRANGED FOR THE CHORD ORGAN
A good yardstick for measuring the popularity and ver-
satility of a musical instrument is the amount and variety
of music published for it. The Chord Organ's popularity
rates very high by this measurement. Since 1951 when
the Chord Organ was first introduced to the public, more
than 1200 selections of music have been issued by the
leading publishers of the country. Included among these
selections is music to appeal to everyone's taste — popular
hit songs, semi-classical favorites, hymns, folk songs, and
classical selections.
This quantity and variety of selections are providing al-
most endless hours of diversion for the Chord organist.
But this is only the beginning of music published for the
Chord Organ. Leading publishers are planning to expand
their publication of Chord Organ music in the future.
IMPORTANT!
Here is the current listing of selections arranged alpha-
betically by the title of the album or selection. The pub-
lisher's name is given in parenthesis under the title. For
addresses of publishers, refer to the listing on the back
page. All music should be ordered from your music dealer
or direct from the publisher.

DEALER TV PROMOTION NETS CHORD ORGAN
FOR THE ST. JOSEPH HOME FOR THE AGED
Hewitt, Inc. of Monroe, Louisiana conducted a promotion
that accomplished two goals. It brought them sales and also
made possible the donation of a Chord Organ to the St.
Joseph Home for the Aged.
Mr. Noe, former Governor of Louisiana, donated free time
on his television station NOKE-TV for a Chord Organ pro-
motion. The announcement was made on television that for
every person visiting Hewitt's store for a demonstration and
mentioning the television show, $5.00 would be given to the
St. Joseph Home for the payment of their Chord Organ.
The promotion turned out to be a tremendous success. Two-
hundred people visited the dealer and enough money was
raised for the complete payment of the Chord Organ.
Station NOKE-TV donated free time which resulted in getting a Chord
Organ for the St. Joseph Home for the Aged.
Mr. Marvin Kovinke, seated at the Chord Organ, played for the TV
broadcast. Standing (left to right) are Mrs. Frances Hamilton, Mrs.
Annie Rimes, Sister Virgine, Father Martinez, Mr. J. Paul Hewitt, and

THE HAMMOND ORGAN CO., 4200 W. DIVERSEY AVE., CHICAGO 39, ILLINOiS
No. 26
APRIL 1955
Captain Harold B. Ferris playing the Chord Organ aboard the S. S.
Alameda, while "Aukland", his pet cocker spaniel listens intently.
SEAFARING MEN PLAY CHORD ORGAN
TO FILL LEISURE HOURS ABOARD SHIP
Time weighs heavy upon the men who spend a good
portion of their hfe at sea. Their diversions are
hmited being confined to the boundaries of the ship.
Sailors thus necessarily turn to some form of diver-
sion to spend their leisure hours.
Captain Harold B. Ferris, master of the S. S. Ala-
meda, plays the Chord Organ for enjoyment while
at sea. Since he hoisted it aboard several months
ago, it has become the center of attraction for all of
the passengers as well as for his own pleasure.
Captain Ferris never had any previous musical train-
ing but is now able to play the more difiicult selec-
tions of music and can run through a concerto in B
flat like an expert.
"Aukland", his pet golden cocker spaniel was at
first jealous of the captain's new interest. When
Ferris first began playing the Chord Organ Aukland
gave a"howr of protest. Now that she has resigned ^
herself to not getting all of the captain's attention,
she has become a good listener and is often even
lulled to sleep by the soft strains of organ music.
The officers of the United States Navy aboard the
U.S,S, Bennington have a Chord Organ in the ship's
wardroom. For those not familiar with navy jargon,
the wardroom is the living quarters where meals and
recreation are provided for the officers. The Chord
Organ has become the feature attraction for the men
who gather there. Familiar songs are played and
sung as the officers get together during these "off'*
hours. You might hear some of your old favorites
being played and sung there, but you can be sure
that "Anchors Aweigh" will be included.
I Officers aboard the U.S.S. Bennington standing (left to right) are Lt.
Carlton W. King, Lt. Francis H. Alden, Lt. H. L. Hope, and Lt. H. F.
letz. Seated at the Chord Organ is Lt. G. H. Winslow.
CHORD HEADLINES t
GOVERNOR OF ARKANSAS, LAWYER, AND EXECUTIVE
RELAX BY PLAYING THE HAMMOND CHORD ORGAN
Governor Cherry of Arkansas and his wife getting instructions from Mr.
J. K. Hamilton and Mr. Robert Hamilton of the Houck Music Company,
Little Rock, Arkansas.
Everyone's work day is usually filled with a lot of activity
and many problems to solve. A tremendous amount of
nervous energy is required and built up during the course
of a day to help us surmount our problems and handle all of
the responsibilities of a full work schedule. As a result, after
a hard work day is over, we not only feel tired, but our
nerves are still tensed up and we find it difficult to relax.
This is particularly true in the case of business and profes-
sional people. - .
Governor Cherry of Arkansas now has a Chord Organ in the
Governor's Mansion which both he and his wife play for
their enjoyment and relaxation. The Chord Organ was pre-
sented to him as a gift from the department heads of the
State.
Mr. John Ewing Harris, a lawyer of Nashville, Tennessee,
takes his Chord Organ in his station wagon wherever he
goes. Since he is secretary to the Honorable J. Percy Priest,
U. S. Representative from the 5th Congressional District of
Tennessee, it is also necessary for him to maintain a resi-
dence in Washington. But whether it's Nashville or Wash-
ington, his Chord Organ is with him. Always having a great
love of music, Mr. Harris was amazed when he first dis-
covered that he could play his favorite music without taking
an involved course of instruction. His Chord Organ playing
has progressed to the stage where he is much in demand by
his friends as a source of entertainment. On one occasion
Harris even entertained 200 guests at a Washington party.
"I used to play the violin but it wasn't much fun playing
alone," writes Mr. Ralph Mueller, owner of the Mueller
Electric Company of Cleveland, Ohio. "Then I happened
across a Chord Organ and in three minutes flat I was playing
'Silent Night'. What a series of scientific miracles involved
in the Chord Organ! A lump of coal is fed to a boiler, which
makes steam, which drives a turbine, which drives a gener-
ator, which goes over miles of copper lines to the organ,
which sends forth beautiful music. A lump of coal is magic-
ally transformed to a great series of pleasing sound waves."
Mr. Ralph Mueller, Cleveland, Ohio
Mr. John Ewing Harris, Nashville, Tennessee

"A MUSICAL KALEIDOSCOPE
WITH THE HAMMOND CHORD ORGAN"
The tremendous versatility and potential of the Chord Organ are beautifully displayed
in this long-playing (331/3) album. Some of the best instrumental effects possible on the
Chord are demonstrated. Forty-seven different effects are recorded on both sides of
the long-playing record. A few bars of each selection are played to demonstrate the
particular instrumental or orchestral effects. Tablet registrations and a description of
each selection are presented on the back of the record jacket.
Ask your Hammond dealer for a "Kaleidoscope" demonstration. Because this recording
is not available for resale, please do not write to the Hammond Organ Company. Your

SUMMER OFFERS AN 'iNVITATION TO RELAXATION"
FOR CHORD ORGAN FAMILIES AND THEIR FRIENDS
Now that those hot lazy summer months are here, we im-
mediately look for some easy-going diversion when the pace
has to be slower. The days are too hot for anything too active
—but we still need entertainment that offers mental stimula-
tion and relaxation at the same time.
What can be more inviting for relaxing entertainment than
a Chord Organ set in an outdoor living room? Away from
the warm stuffy rooms of the house, you can have (see pic-
ture at upper left) an ideal setting for music— sunlight, fresh
air and perhaps a cool refreshing breeze.
The requirements for a carefree outdoor living room are
very simple. It begins with a cement or stone base that can
be swept clean of leaves, grass, and crumbs, and one on
which you can turn the garden hose. Next requirement is
light weight furniture that can take sunshine and rain. And
that much is permanent. To add to this for daily enjoyment,
you can bring on the beverages, the food, the music, books
and magazines— even your house bird, or aquarium.
(continued on Page 2)
This perfect family setting is provided by Mr. and Mrs. Warren Klint
and their children: (left to right) Dickie, Ronnie and Bonnie. The Klint
family resides in Rockford, Illinois.
All five members in the family of George C. Nichols of Fort Lauderdale,
Florida spend their leisure moments at the Chord Organ.

"DIXIELAND FOR THE HAMMOND
CHORD ORGAN"*
Here's a new folio that every Chord Organ owner ought to
have— something entirely different which opens up a new
potential for the Hammond Chord Organ. "DIXIELAND
FOR THE HAMMOND CHORD ORGAN" contains 26 of
the best known jazz selections of the swingy "Dixieland"
type. Most of them are easy to play like "Mobile Blues", "Co-
penhagen", "Sobbin Blues", and "Wolverine Blues". Others
are full of red hot "shotgun rhythm" jazz of the Prohibition
Era-like "The Sugar Foot Stomp", "Milenberg Joys", "Deep
Henderson", and "Maple Leaf Rag". And there is "sweet" jazz
—like "Melancholy", "Basin Street Blues", and "Tin Roof
Blues". All the numbers are freely arranged in the character-
istic Dixieland swing style— full of cute little "hot licks" woven
in with the melody together with tricky "blue endings". You
will also find that many of these "endings", etc. can be used
in other pieces that you play in the same key. You will be
thrilled at how wonderfully effective the Hammond Chord
Organ is for playing jazz!

SUMMER RELAXATION" . . . CONT.
An outdoor living room has many advantages. It's there for
you and you alone for those precious moments you find to
relax. It's there for family pleasure and for gracious enter-
tainment of guests. It makes summer housework lighter, too,
because it catches the heavy traffic and the kitchen work.
The outdoor living room we've suggested in the picture
gets a morning sweep with a broom brush, or a water rinse
when necessary. Then it's ready for morning coffee with the
paper, mid-morning iced beverage with a neighbor (and one
for the hot, tired, mailman), and for lunch and dinner (cooked
or carried out) with family and friends.
But indoors or outdoors during the summer months the
Chord Organ will take its place as the center of family activ-
ity. Strains of organ music for dancing will instill the air for
those informal parties on the patio, barbecues will be even
more flavorful with the added spice of music, and indoor en-
tertainment will be more colorful as the family and their
friends play and sing at the Chord Organ. And the most
amazing thing about these family activities centered around
the Chord Organ is that everyone will be actively participat-
ing in creating their own entertainment. Here is an ideal
means of bringing family and friends closer together-sharing
a common interest and enjoying it at the same time.
"RHYTHM BLUES FOR

Here is another album containing some of the nation's top
recorded, radio, and juke box hits. The eight selections are
all at the peak of their popularity and are skillfully arranged
for effective but easy playing on the Hammond Chord Organ.
(In playing this album, observe that the diminished chords
are marked with a small circle rather than the usual minus
sign. Thus, "C°"- means "C — " and "3°" means "3 — ".)

CHORD ORGAN CONTRIBUTES TO MUSICAL EDUCATION
OF STUDENTS AT CALIFORNIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
<*™.__jyj^^l]3ei±a^ Goodmam a&d-foiirth .grades^. _uses-
the Chord Organ every day m her classes.
The Hammond Chord Organ is kept busy at all times at the
McKittrick Elementary School of Kern County, California.
An important advantage is offered to the teachers and stu-
dents, because anyone can play the Chord Organ without
having previous musical training. Many children who ordi-
narily would never know the satisfying experience of creat-
ing music, will try the Chord Organ because it is so easy to
play. All of the teachers play the Chord Organ for their
students in the classrooms, and even visitors to the school
can't resist the temptation to try it. The school's principal,
Mr. Willis J. Reed, spends his few relaxing moments at the
Chord Organ, too, during those rare times when it is not
being used.
The McKittrick Elementary School, not only provides for
the educational needs of the children, but also serves as a
center for the community's social activities. It enters into
the daily living of the people of the community. The Chord
Organ is used at most of these social activities held at the
school. It is used in the P.T.A. programs, Boy Scout meet-
ings, and even provides the music for community dances.
The architecture of the McKittrick Elementary School is a
fine example of the modern trend in one-story school con-
struction. The appearance doesn't resemble the ordinary
conception of a school building. Instead, it looks more like
a large rambling ranch home, witli attractive landscaping
and low construction, put in a beautiful setting. The school
is more like a "second" home for the 75 students who at-
tend there.
The principal, Mr, Willis J. Reed, takes a musical intermission at the
Chord Organ.

ern "ranch-like" appearance.

SOLO VIOLIN TONES
on the
HAMMOND CHORD ORGAN
The violin solo is one of the
tones derhonstrated on the
^'Musical Kaleidoscope" recording
Chord Organ owners all over the country were
thrilled when they heard Hammond's new demon-
stration recording, "A Musical Kaleidoscope with
the Hammond Chord Organ''. The tremendous ver-
satility and potential of the Chord Organ are beau-
tifully presented in this recording which includes
some of the best instrumental effects obtainable on
the instrument. Forty-seven different effects are re-
corded on both sides of this long-play album ( avail-
able in 33-1/3 and 45 rpm). A few bars of each
selection are played to demonstrate the particular
instrument or orchestral effects.
Finally observe that the last note played is sounded
an octave higher than written and also is made to
sound without vibrato by adding both of the SOLO
VIBRATO CANCEL stops. Thi& simulates the dif-
ficult effect of playing a high ''harmonic" on the
violin in which the player merely touches his string.
He, of course, cannot execute his vibrato when play-
ing "harmonics".
One of the examples is Massenet's "Elegie" played
with a violin solo effect. While listening to it, many
critical listeners were amazed at the unexpected
fidelity of a solo violin tone which is possible on the
Hammond Chord Organ. There are, of course, many
combinations of stops which produce string quali-
ties. One of the best of these is:
DIIIDDIIIDDfilllflDDDQ
With the above combination the widest solo vibrato
will be present to stimulate the violinist's vibrato as
he shakes his hand on the string. Furthermore, the
DEEP TONE and BRILLIANT stops produce both
the low resonance of the body of the violin together
with the very high tonal briUiance caused by the
rosined bow, as it stretches and snaps the violin
string into vibration. Also, the smooth attack (or
tonal build-up ) characteristic of the violinist's bow-
ing is duplicated on the Chord Organ by playing
each key in a slightly detached or "non-legato" man-
ner. This key "touch response" is of the greatest im-
portance and functions as follows: If one key is
pressed before another key is released (legato), the
pitch of the tone instantaneously shifts. This style
of plttying is preferred for fastmoving passages. If,
however, a very slight hut imperceptahle pause is
made between playing keys (raising the hand slight-
ly between notes), each note will sound with a
smooth and (non-legato) gradual tonal build-up.
This latter technique is preferred for playing slow-
moving melodies in the violin style.
Massenet's "Elegie" is found on pages 2 and 3 of
your CLASSICAL MUSIC FOR THE HAMMOND
CHORD ORGAN album. Note that in simulating
the effect of the violin, the organist has made fre-
quent shifts to the octave. This shifting style is a
much used part of the professional violinist's tech-
nique.

AMATEUR HAMMOND CHORD ORGANISTS ENTERTAIN
AT RESTAURANTS. DANCES, PARTlEi AND WEDDINGS
Thelma E. Peirce plays her Hammond Chord Organ at Kauai Inn in
Hawaii.
People who never studied music before are surprising them-
selves and their friends with their playing ability on the
Hammond Chord Organ. Some organists have progressed to
such an extent that they are now playing professionally to
supplement their regular income.
Thelma Peirce, a physical therapist at the Wilcox Hospital,
Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii, is a Chord Organ owner who plays
professionally. She entertains the guests on her Chord Organ
during the dinner hour at the Kauai Inn.
A fireman at Marshall, Michigan, Bruce OXeary's leisure
time is very much in demand. Everyone around Marshall is
acquainted with O'Leary's abihty as Chord Organist, be-
cause he has entertained at many weddings, dances, dinner
parties, picnics, and county fairs. When he has an engage-
ment to play, O'Leary and his wife, Doris, merely load the
Chord Organ in the back seat of the car and off they go.
While on duty at the firehouse, O'Leary has his Chord Organ
by his side. Between fires and false alarms, he has a lot of
time to practice new numbers.
One Chord Organ owner is getting an early start in playing
professionally. Only twelve years old, Bobby Collins, has
the responsibility of maintaining his pet Welsh pony, Black
Beauty. To feed and care for his pony and save enough
money for a horse, Bobby plays his Chord Organ at recep-
tions and parties around East Braintree, Massachusetts.
Entertaining at the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority party at Marshall, Michi-
gan is Bruce O'Leary, a fireman — Chord organist.

arm is off at the elbow, she is able to play beautifully with
the aid of an artificial arm.
Springfield, Illinois
The last regular meeting of the season was a dinner at the
Washington Park Pavilion. After the dinner and a business
meeting, dancing followed. Music for the dancing was, of
course, played on the Hammond Chord Organ.
A Chord Organ "jam session" was held in the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Fred Hederick. Everyone was reported to have
had a grand time.
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Through the efforts of Mrs. Goforth a Chord Organ Club of
25 members was organized. The meetings have been so
stimulating that the members are reluctant to leave.
Eugene, Oregon
A new Chord Organ Club was just organized. The officers
are Mrs. Carl M. Peterson, President; Mr. Gordon Smyth,

PLAYING TIPS
^.. ■
As explained in your "First Half Hour Instruction" booklet,
one of the easiest yet most beautiful styles of playing the
Hammond Chord Organ is to employ a smoothly sustained
accompaniment by continuously pressing down the Chord
Bar and Left Pedal while smoothly progressing from one
Chord Button to another. With the sustained accompani-
ment thus provided, the element of rhythm is conveyed
chiefly by the melodic movement. However, there are many
melodies which, of themselves, do not supply the required
amount of rhythm. Examples of the latter are waltzes, fox-
trots, and particularly Latin American tunes. For melodies
of this class, the Pedals and Chord Bar may be played in a
"pattern" to add a wide variety of charming rhythmic ac-
companiments.
Example 13 of the "Musical Kaleidoscope with the Ham-
mond Chord Organ" recording clearly illustrates a Chord

The Latin American Rhythm is
demonstrated on the "Musical

Bar and Pedal pattern which is especially applicable to Latin
American melodies. The tune is the well-known "Carem
Carmela" and is contained in "Music for the Hammond
Chord Organ Vol. 4 — Latin American Collection" published
by the Ethel Smith Music Corp. A suggested combination
of stops for this selection is:

As you listen to this excerpt, you will hear the Left Pedal
played on the first beat of each measure. The Right Pedal is
played on the third and fourth beats of each measure. How-
ever, the first beat pedal note is longer than those of the third
and fourth beats. The Chord Bar is pressed on the second
half of every beat with the bar held somewhat longer for the
second half of the first beat. Using the usual musical notation;

NOTE: Before learning to play the above pattern it is recommended that you learn to play the simpler Pedal and Chord Bar
patterns contained on the last pages of your "Second Half Hour Instruction" booklet. Then proceed with the above using various
Chord Buttons only. DON'T ADD THE RIGHT HAND UNTIL YOU HAVE LEARNED TO PLAY THE PATTERN SO
WELL THAT YOU CAN CARRY ON A RUNNING CONVERSATION WITH SOMEONE WHILE PLAYING IT. When

THE HAMMOND ORGAN CO., 4200 W. DIVERSEY AVE., CHICAGO 39, ILLINOIS
No. 30
September 1955
John C. Stedman, an Atlanta, Georgia busi-
ness man, found a profitable hobby in play-
ing the Chord Organ with a musical combo.
Robert Range played the Chord Organ for a
recent radio broadcast over Station WRMN,
Elgin, Illinois.
A truck driver by day, Robert Range looks
forward to the restful moments he spends at
his Chord Organ.
HAMMOND CHORD ORGAN OWNERS OF ALL OCCUPATIONS
GET FUN AND RELAXATION FROM CREATING MUSIC
Mrs. Jane W. Swartz, an accountant of Worland, Wyoming, finds play-
ing the Chord Organ relaxing after a day of routine office work.
Thousands of owners are surprising themselves by being able to play
their own music on the Hammond Chord Organ. They are surprised
because they never played a musical instrument before, never could
read music, or never thought that they had any musical talent. As soon
as they started playing the Chord Organ they discovered an absorbing
new interest which is at the time a source of relaxation.
People, whether they are a housewife, a teacher, doctor, laborer, or a
business man — all have a certain amount of pressure on them during
their working day. After a day's work they are often tensed up and
tired and need something to relax them. Music is a marvelous means of
relaxing and resting the nerves, and this is particularly true in playing
a musical instrument. But before the advent of the Chord Organ, the
source of relaxation in playing a musical instrument was denied to
many people who never studied music. The average person busily
occupied in raising a family or earning a living, can find no time to take
the lessons necessary to play a musical instrument.
The Chord Organ is offering the complete answer to busy people who
need relaxation and an interest outside of their work. Robert Range of
Elgin, Illinois, for example, is a Chord Organ owner who drives large
semi-trailers in the highly congested areas of Chicago. The arduous
nature of his work requires that he has some form of relaxation after a

hard day of fighting the traffic. The Chord Organ has filled this need
perfectly. Every night he spends some time at the Chord Organ for
relaxation. His playing has advanced to the extent that he already
played for a radio broadcast over station WRMN at Elgin.
Another Chord Organ owner, Mrs. Jane W. Swartz of Worland,
Wyoming, finds that the close work she does as an accountant leaves
her in a tense and nervous condition at the end of the day. She writes,
"I find it so relaxing to sit down at the organ for a period of time then."
A business man of Atlanta, Georgia, John C. Stedman, has turned play-
ing the Chord Organ into a profitable hobby as well. He has been
playing the Chord Organ professionally for the past three years as a
member of a combo.
Mrs. Scott Wilson, a Chord Organ owner of New Orleans, Louisiana, is
chairman of the Volunteer Advisory Committee at the Charity Hospital.
Her present assignment doing research on brain waves is a fascinating
one. But she remarks that after a day spent at the hospital all the
tension disappears when she plays her Chord Organ.
These are just a few examples of the many thousands of owners who
have found in playing the Chord Organ a welcome relief from their
everyday problems. At the same time they are experiencing for the first
time the thrill that comes from creating their own music.
PLAYING IN DUET STYLE
Many people who have heard the recording, A MUSICAL KALEIDO-
SCOPE WITH THE HAMMOND CHORD ORGAN, wonder how it
is possible for a single player to produce the amazing multi-voice
orchestral effects heard in Example No. 20 {"Softly And Tenderly",)
The answer lies in the fact that the recording organist was playing in a
duet style on the keyboard - that is, he was pressing down two keys
simultaneously. Furthermore, he was employing stops in both the
"Organ" and "Solo" Divisions. Under these conditions, the keyboard
of the Hammond Chord Organ functions in a very unusual and won-
derful manner.
To fully comprehend what happens, one must first understand that
there are two completely independent tone generating systems brought
into operation whenever a key is pressed. These two systems operate
on entirely different principles. One system is called the "Organ Divi-
sion" and is controlled by the "Flutes" and "Strings" stops. The other
is the "Solo Division" and is controlled by the thirteen solo stops to the
right. When two keys are held down simultaneously, the Organ Divi-
sion will sound both of them, but the Solo Division will sound only the
highest key. Thus, the highest ( or melody ) key is always tonally dif-
ferentiated and emphasized with respect to the lower key.
Many marvellously interesting duet style possibilities are thus opened
up in which the higher melody key sounds in interesting tonal contrast
with the lower counter-melody key. For example, in the "Softly And
Tenderly" recording, the Solo Division was registered to sound in the
bass range:
Diii&fiiiifiaoiiiQQfioO
Here you heard the higher melody key actually soimding lower in pitch
than the lower countermelody key. This was because the "Bass" stop
caused the Solo Division to sound an octave lower than the Organ
Division. The resulting duet effect of two separate and distinct or-
chestral instruments is startingly real and pleasant to hear. The player
of the fiammond Chord Organ is accomplishing with but one hand and
keyboard that which would usually require two hands and two key-
boards!!
IMPORTANT! When playing in duet style, be careful to always hold
down the higher melody keys in a smooth and sustained manner. In
other words, don't release one melody key until you have pressed the
next one. Should you inadvertently release a higher melody note while
still holding down a lower countermelody key, you will hear your solo
tone temporarily play down to the countermelody which, of course, is
not desired. This may sound a bit compUcated but in actual practice
all that you need to remember is: WHEN PLAYING DUET STYLE
DON'T RELEASE A HIGH MELODY KEY UNTIL YOU HAVE
PRESSED THE NEXT ONE. It's all right to play the lower counter-
melody keys in a detached manner, but not the higher melody keys.
For a good duet-style arrangement of "Softly And Tenderly" see page
43 of the recently issued Hammond Chord Organ folio, EIGHTY-
SEVEN HYMNS FOR THE HAMMOND CHORD ORGAN, pub-
lished by the Theodore Presser Co., Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Note
that this score specifies that all notes be played up one octave.

NEW MUSIC NEWS
"COLLEGE SONGS
for the
HAMMOND CHORD ORGAN "*
In keeping with the season of football and the return to school, a new
album containing 31 of the best known college songs has just been
published. The name of the album is^ "College Songs for the Hammond
Chord Organ" and is published by the Melrose Music Corporation, 35
West 51st Street, New York, N. Y. Each selection is especially arranged
for the Hammond Chord Organ. Included are the stirring favorites of
the "Big Ten" and "Ivy" colleges as well as other leading universities
in all sections of the country. Also included are the famous fraternity
songs, "Sweetheart of Sigma Chi" and "White Star of Sigma Nu." This
album beautifully brings into focus the Chord Organ's inherent effect-
iveness in playing marches.
"College Songs for the Hammond Chord Organ" is a splendid album
for learning to play 4/4 rhythms using the Pedals and Chord Bar. In
general, you will note that most of the marches are registered using the
"Pedal Fast Decay" stop with the "Solo Balancer" advanced. The
Pedals should be played in a detached staccato manner on the first,
second and fourth beats. To be effective, marches must be played with
a steady beat. They can be played quite slowlv and still retain their
natural vigor.
A great many of the selections in this folio are scored with strong
countermelodies. You may find it easier, at the start, to play only the
higher note which is the main melody. Th« count^rm^lody^^an be^
added later. The final result of melody lead, countermelody, harmony
background, and rhythm chords and bass is little short of miraculous
when one considers that it all comes from a single instrument and
player. CONTENTS:

BVC SONG HITS
for the
HAMMOND CHORD ORGAN '"^
A fine new folio, BVC SONG HITS FOR THE HAMMOND CHORD
ORGAN, has just been placed on the market. We unhesitatingly
recommend that every Chord Organ owner secure a copy of this
splendid folio and enjoy many hours of musical relaxation to the finest
in popular and orchestral music. Not only does it contain a very ex-
tensive Hst of popular "standards" by great American composers such
as Walter Donaldson, Harry Warren and Rube Bloom, but also out-
standing instrumental works such as Dave Rose's "HOLIDAY FOR
STRINGS" and "OUR WALTZ". Then too, there are present day hits
such as "IT'S A SIN TO TELL A LIE", "OUTSIDE OF HEAVEN",
and "LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME". The popular schottische "SCAT-
TER-BRAIN" is also contained as are the musical favorites from many
of the leading 20th Century Fox motion pictures. All of the numbers
are wonderfully effective on the Chord Organ, and most of them are
easy to play. Incidentally, "WHEN A GYPSY MAKES HIS VIOLIN
CRY" is an excellent number for demonstrating the amazingly beauti-
ful "double-stop" violin effects possible on the Hammond Chord Organ.

No. 31
OCTOBER 1955
HAMMOND CHORD ORGAN PROVIDES MUSIC
FOR SERVICES OF MANY SMALL CHURCHES
Mildred May (seated at organ) and Ada Duhigg (standing)
play the Hammond Chord Organ for all chapel services at the
Highland Bay Community House in Bingham Canyon, Utah.
Members of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter ^
Day Saints, Provo, Utah, practise for the Sunday morning service. W
Etta Hinkins is seated at the Chord Organ, standing (left to
right) are Elsie Aston, La Verl Aston, and Thelma De St. Jeor.
The organ is universally accepted as the traditional mu-
sical instrument for the church.
But there are many small churches without the funds
necessary for the purchase of an organ. They are therefore
deprived of the kind of music w^hich v^ill give a more
reverent atmosphere to their w^orship services.
The Hammond Chord Organ is filling the musical re-
quirements of numerous small churches. Small churches,
many of w^hich are just getting organized, have found that
the Hammond Chord Organ is the ideal musical instru-
ment for their needs. Its low cost is within the limited
budget of small churches. And because it is so easy to play,
no expense of a trained organist is required.
At the same time the Hammond Chord Organ is used for
all of the social functions of the church. Light weight and
occupying a very small amount of space, it is easily moved
to the church basement or social room for a meeting of
the young people's group, ladies aid society, men's club,
Church banquets, and Boy Scouts.
The dinners take on added flavor with community sing-
ing, accompanied by organ music. Remarkable thing about
the Chord Organ is that anyone can play it for entertain-
ment at any church social event.
Whether it's the Sunday morning worship service or
some social event at these small churches, you'll hear the
reverent music of the Hammond Chord Organ.

HOW TO ADD THE VIOLINIST'S ''CRY"
TO YOUR HAMMOND CHORD ORGAN MUSIC
Many people who have listened intently to the recording,
A MUSICAL KALEIDOSCOPE WITH THE HAM-
MOND CHORD ORGAN, have simply marvelled at the
expressive smoothness of the melody notes heard in Exam-
ple 31 ("Songs My Mother Taught Me"). Many remark
how the melody notes seem to possess an extraordinary
and poignant appeal like the "cry" of the violinist as he
plays a gypsy air. Others, who are trained musicians, ex-
claim, "I just don't see how it is possible on a keyboard
instrument! I can hear the organist playing chromatic
transitions between the melody notes, but there are no
"clash" effects from playing adjacent keys at the same
time. The melody notes are rich and full-bodied — yet
the chromatic transitions are softly refined and miracu-
lously devoid of "clash". It sounds like magic to me!!"
Before continuing any further, let it be said that the
violinist's "cry" is nothing more than a quick little "slide"
in pitch between two melody notes. For example, if the
melody moves from "C" to "G", the violinist will (almost
unconsciously) "slide" in pitch to about "D" and then make
a jump the rest of the way to the final "G". These "slides",
of course, are not actually written on the music sheet but
are interspersed into the music wherever they are deemed
to be effective. Like salt and pepper, if they are used spar-
ingly, they can be very effective and artistic. If the violinist
uses too many "slides" the general effect may become overly
sentimental.
Before the advent of the Hammond Chord Organ, organ
"slides" were considered somewhat in poor taste. Some of
the movie theater organists of by-gone years used them,
but, in general^ their effectiveness was impaired through
FLAY ALL NOTES UP ONE OCTAVB
c Am
^^
the fact that it was practically impossible to play a chromatic
run without having two or more adjacent keys down at
the same instant. The result was a clashing which was
louder than the melody notes themselves. With the Ham-
mond Chord Organ the situation is entirely different. When
two adjacent keys are simultaneously played on this re-
markable new instrument, the lower key is always weaker
than the higher because the tone from the Solo Division
sounds only on the highest key pressed. Therefore, the
lower cannot clash with the higher. As one plays a legato
chromatic scale there is an exquisite absence of clash and
unwanted loudness. Try it yourself and see!
HOW TO ADD TRANSITIONS ~ Adding transitions is
something that anyone can do without having to study
musical theory. First of all, remember to play transitions
t^ery rapidly and just before the new note. In other words,
wait with the transition until it's "almost time" to play the
next note.
If the interval between two melody notes is a third or less
(for example, "E" down to "C"), the usual transition may
be a chromatic scale (that is, play all notes between the "E"
and "C" melody notes). If the interval is greater than a
third, the transition takes the form of two consecutive
notes in the direction of the next melody note followed
by a "jump" for the remainder of the interval. For example,
the transition from "A" down to "E" would be "G#" fol-
lowed by "G" followed by a jump to the final "E".
The example below shows exactly what the recording
organist did by way of adding transitions in the "Songs
My Mother Taught Me" example:

THE HAMMOND ORGAN CO., 4200 W. DIVERSEY AVE., CHICAGO 39, ILLINOIS
No. 32
NOVEMBER 1955
Age didn't deter Dr, J. W. Young, Sr. of Sweetwater, Texas to begin
a new hobby. At the age of 75 he now plays the Chord Organ well
enough to entertain his friends in addition to his own personal enjoy-
ment.
The Hammond Chord Organ was a Christmas gift to Dr. Lawrence P.
Matthews from his wife. She thought it would be an ideal source of
relaxation for him, but now the whole family enjoys it in their home
at Atlanta, Georgia.
PLAYING THE CHORD ORGAN GIVES DOCTORS
A HEALTHY ''ESCAPE" WORLD TO RELAX IN
Everyone knows the life of a doctor is a hectic one. The de-
mands of the profession are tremendous, at times almost caus-
ing the nerves and physical stamina to near the breaking point.
A doctor has to be prepared for an emergency at any time — and
that means being prepared both physically and mentally.
After a very strenuous day it has been the experience of many
doctors that the best way for them to unwind their nerves is to
sit down at the Hammond Chord Organ and play a few selec-
tions. Their problems of the day seem to vanish, as they put
themselves into the creation of music. Playing the Chord Organ
for them is just a matter of substituting a pleasurable, relaxing
experience for the problems that have occurred during the daily
routine of a doctor's life.
Putting themselves into the creation of music in a sense is a
healthy escape into another kind of world where there are no
problems. Doctors find they need this healthy kind of "escape"
world. There they can completely relax and rest so that they
can better serve their patients with renewed vigor.
Dr. J. W. Young, Sr. of Sweetwater, Texas, is an example of a
doctor who never could find time for anything like music during
the 43 years of his practice. He was one of the busiest doctors
of the "Horse and Buggy" era. He still maintains an active
practice. But it wasn't until just a few years ago at the age of
seventy or better that he took time out to enjoy music. He bought
a Chord Organ. Soon he taught himself how to read music and
play reasonably well. Now music is an important and almost
indispensable part of his life. Even to the extent that he now
entertains others. He missed the fun of music most of his life,
but he didn't feel that it was too late to discover it.
Dr. Lawrence P. Matthews, of Atlanta, Georgia, is another doctor
who relaxes by playing the Chord Organ. His wife gave him a
Chord Organ for Christmas, but it turned out to be more of a
family gift. Now all the family enjoys it, including their daughter
in California who often listens in long distance.

Each number is attractively arranged in concert style with a double
chorus including words. The two choruses are scored in different styles
and in different keys with a suitable modulating passage. We are sure
that all Chord Organ owners will enjoy playing these two excellent
show numbers in the style of the recording organist.
"SONS HITS FOR

of that splendid song, "Winter Wonderland." We are glad to announce

Comments" review) in the new folio, BVC Songs for the Hammond
Chord Organ published by Bregman, Vocco, & Conn, Inc., 1619 Broad-
way, New York 19, N. Y. The prices is $1.50. Order from your music
