Dear Friends:

Thank you for joining us at the Reggie Lewis Center's 10 Year
Anniversary Gala, This event is a momentous stage in the history
of Massachusetts. For 35 years, the Massachusetts State Track
Coaches Association lobbied to get the funds allocated to have

this facility built, and for that reason, it is fitting that we
collaborate on this milestone.

The Reggie Lewis Center at Roxbury Community College not
only serves as the primary site for the Massachusetts public high
school track and field competitions and Roxbury Community
College athletic programs, but it has quic kly become an integral
part of the surrounding community. Rtness and wellness programs
for youth and senior citizens, along with sports clinics, have
positively impacted the community and will continue to do so in
the coming years.

The success of me Center could not have been achieved without
your support For that, we thank you. Lastly, we congratulate the
honorees tonight as these individuals have made extraordinary
efforts to ensure the success of mis great facility.

Enjoy yourself and thank you for coming and continuing to
support the Center.

Sincerely,

Keith McDermott

Dear Friends:

On behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, it is my honor to extend warm
greetings as you gather to celebrate the Tenth Anniversary of the Reggie Lewis Track and
Athletic Center.

Since opening its doors in 1995, the Reggie Lewis Center has witnessed seventeen World
and American records. It has been the state's top venue for public high school track
competitions, and has provided a fitness facility for all ages and a place for community
organizations to meet.

I commend the Center for fulfilling the goals of its namesake. As Reggie Lewis was, in
life, a staunch advocate for the youth of the Boston community, the Reggie Lewis Track
and Athletic Center has worked tirelessly to carry on his mission.

Please accept my best wishes for an enjoyable celebration.

Sincerely,

John Thomas

A Ugtnd in the World off Athletics

By: Zara Northover

The Ingredients to success are id be talented, dedicated, hardworking and devoted These adjectives
are also used to describe John Thomas. Thomas was a talented athlete, dedicated coach, hardworking
businessman and a devoted athletic director.

Making an Impact was never an issue for Thomas, the record-breaking high jumper who managed to
make history at the age of 1 7. Bom on March 3, 1941 In Boston MA, Thomas went on to amass
undefeated records in the high jum p became the first man in the world to dear 7 feet. As a high
school New England champion in both the hurdles and high jump he turned down hundreds of full
scholarship offers In order to attend Boston University. During his tenure at BU, Thomas was
undefeated. He was selected 4 years to the all American track team, dalmed 5 New England Outdoor
Championship titles, 6 indoor and outdoor IC4A championship titles, as well as6 NCAA championship
titles . As a freshman, in college Thomas jumped 7 feet 1 _ inches to claim the world indoor record.
As a sophomore, he broke the world record 8 times with g best jump of 7 feet 3 _ inches and made the
US Olympic team where he brought home a bronze medal. A few years later he became known as the
man who cleared 7 feet or higher a colossal 1 91 times, losing only 8 competitions and placing In two
Olympic Games bronze In i960, sliver In 1964 also winning 9 national titles.

In order to sum up Thomas^ athletic experience, he might just say Thomasism* which meant believing
In himself, setting goals and going after them. Thomas, who was satisfied athletically, realized that he
had more to oiler beyond competition, immediately after graduation in 1 963 Thomas accepted a
coaching position at his alma mata Boston University taking charge of both the men's and women's
track and field programs. Thomas dalmed that even though formally he finished 1 S years of coaching
at BU he continued to help those who wanted to be helped. "Coaching is something that is done
throughout life whether It Is giving of advice or aiding with technique," he noted; advising to many
that 'competition is 70 percent mental. Therefore, one should prepare at practice and then go to the
meet and have fun."

Thomas's feats did not stop at a coaching level. From 1964-1 985 he was Inducted Into 6 halls of fame,
most notably the Boston University Hall of Rime, Helms Foundation Hail of Fame, LIS Track and Field
Hall of Fame and the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. He has been a role model to many children,
teens, and collegians, often giving speeches and seminars In order to reach out and give back. Venturing
off into the business world, he ended right back within athletics by accepting the Athletics Director
position at Roxbury Community College in 1 994 In order to turn the program aroundlThomas used
his athletic background, business mindset and compassion for student athletes to ensure that the
Roxbury Community College athletics program became nationally recognized. Thomas states, "There
was no greater feeling the n taking home the 2000 National championship title when the Men's
Basketball team captured victory at the National Junior College Athletic Association Basketball
Tournament" Having never missed an athletic activity, award ceremony or graduation,Triomas has
been there for his students and coaches. He will be missed as he retires to relax and finally take a break.
However, don't be surprised If he is In the stands proudly watching a flourishing athletic program that
he started* with student athletes who continue to make him proud.
