foreword

Much has happened since that dav four years ago,
when one hundred and ninety-six freshmen unpacked their
suitcases and registered at Roberts' Hall. The thought (it
living together for four years was thrilling, and many things
were to be done. There was so much ahead of us! Of course
we were green for a while, but before long we learned our
way around and began to feel that we were a part of the
college. Then came those terrible daws when main of our
fellow classmates left us to join the armed forces. We were
heartbroken at the thought, but the bows themselves took it
bravely. Although we who remained have missed them, the
memory of the happy times we have had together will
always be with us.

High Point College will always hold a place deep
in our hearts. We have grown to love the college, the stu-
dents, the faculty, and all that is a part of it. May this book
Serve to keep fresh in our minds forever memories of our
friends, our teachers, and our college.

Mio and Dee.

Home Management
Mouse

Every girl working for a bachelor
of science degree in Home Economics
is required to live in the Practice
House for six weeks during the last
semester of her senior year. The girls
consider this a privilege, and together
they practice the principles they have
learned in their four years of training.

They actually manage the house.
which gives them a better understand-
ing of the value and importance of a budget. They are industrious workers,
but enjoy planning, cooking, and eating their meals, as well as dusting and arrang-
ing furniture. All the jobs which go with the duties of a good housewife are prac-
ticed by these students. There are all sorts of parties, teas, dinners, and many
"formals." They adopt the motto "Experience is the best teacher," and carry it out
ro the fullest degree.

The I Ionic Management I louse is under the supervision of Miss Ada Johnson,
head of the Home Economics Department, who guides and directs the girls in
their practice work. The girls who are enjoying the Practice House this year are
Henrietta Buiicly. Martha llamm. Sarah King, and Arlcne Stcelman.

This year six students were inducted into The Order of the Lighted Lamp at
the annual tapping ceremony of members. To be taken into this society is the
most coveted honor a student may receive at the college. The requirements for
membership are based on scholarship, leadership, character, and service, and a
student must have an average of B. or better, for the five preceding semesters, with
no conditions or failures. The students are nominated by the old members and
are elected by the faculty. These students are to be congratulated, for membership
in The Lighted Lamp is an honor few achieve.

Each year the faculty elects a group of students from the junior class to
serve as college marshals. They are elected on the basis of appearance, depend-
ability, character, and scholarship. To be elected marshal is a high honor.

The duties of the marshals are to serve at lectures, concerts, chapel programs,
commencement exercises, and all college functions.

This year's marshals are to be commended for the way in which they have
carried out their duties and upheld the standards upon which they were chosen.

SECTION IV

Athletic Association

The Athletic Council is responsible for much of the school spirit of the cam-
pus. The members of the council direct and supervise all intercollegiate sports in
which the college participates. By means of physical education classes and intra-
mural sports, they extend the athletic program to every student on the campus.

Since the manpower shortage has made it impossible to continue with many
of the intercollegiate sports, an Intramural Committee has been formed to pro-
mote more interest in intramural games, and to broaden the extra-curricular life
of the college student. From all appearances the intramural program has met with
decided success.

PANTHERS

The Panthers began the season with
all new recruits except for one letter
man; yet this, in one way at least, has
been an epoch-making year for the
team. The remarkable history that
the team has made is due to one of the
new prospects, Nancy Iscnhour. a
senior girl, who gained a position on
the squad. Nancy is the first girl evei
to play on a boys' basketball varsity in
any college. Her participation in the
games helped to boost the spirit of the
players as well as that of the student
body, and the novelty of her playing
on the team has brought considerable
publicity to the college. Not only was
her picture featured in local news-
papers, but it also appeared with a fea-
ture article in Collier's Magazine; and
a photographer from the Universal
News Reel took pictures of her on the
campus and in action for an oddity
short.

The team played a number of strong
service teams, and, although they lost
most of these tilts, they gained valu-
able experience which enabled them
to win six out of ten conference games.
Two of our players, Malcolm Sullivan
and Arthur Shcek, were chosen by the
coaches of the conference for guard
positions on the All-North State Con-
ference Team.
