ch-ch-ch-changes!
Walk down the Promenade, through the hallways and
across the playing fields; everywhere you turn on campus
you find change. From the complete renovation of The
Complex (McEwen, Wesley, North, Yadkin) to completely
new construction projects that include: Blessing Residence
Hall, Slane Student Center, Steele Sports Center, and the
Vert Soccer Stadium - it's easy to see our $100 million trans-
formation is taking place! While the construction dust and
noise is a small price to pay for all the progress, Dr. Qubein
has been wonderful enough to provide free car washes each
Saturday for students!
European elegance is what landscape
designers were going for when they designed
the walkways and gardens around HPU.
Top, the new Steele

Million in HPU's Future
In an announcement that rocked the
hallowed halls of High Point
University, philanthropist and com-
munity leader David R. Hayworth
pledged the single largest gift in the
school's 84-year history. This new
unrestricted contribution — along with
previous donations from David
Hayworth and his brother Charles —
brings the Hayworths' total investment
at the university to more than
$25 million.
"We are so grateful to David
Hayworth," said President Qubein, who
has led a campaign
that has raised $100
million since he took
over in January 2005.
"He is a philanthro-
pist extraordinaire

High Point University
and wants to secure
its promising future."
The new gift
becomes a significant
part of the $250 million transformation
of the university. "This new commit-
ment will provide the necessary funds
to enhance academic programs and
nurture student life," said Dr. Qubein.
"Mr. Hayworth is making a huge differ-
ence and we are blessed with his
friendship."
"What is happening at High Point
University is just amazing and I want
to be a part of the exciting new devel-
opments on campus," said Hayworth.

graduation 2006
The weekend of May 5-6, 2006 marked High Point University's 82nd
Graduation exercises. The festivities attracted a record crowd, including 6,000
people packing the front lawn of Roberts Hall on Saturday morning for the
Commencement ceremony. What a thrilling time, which brought together stu-
dents, parents, faculty, staff, supporters, family and friends.
Graduates and their families were inspired by a thoughtful, poignant and
sometimes humorous keynote Commencement address by Her Majesty Queen
Noor of Jordan. The evening prior, Dr. James C. Howell, senior pastor of
Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC, delivered a compelling
message of faith and hope during the Baccalaureate service. Graduates and
their families were also treated to the annual alumni luncheon, which fea-
tured a keynote address from Dr. Nido Qubein.
This momentous occasion brought pride to all of those associated with
High Point University, and we prayerfully and thoughtfully send our 2006 grad-
uates into the world to pursue significance in all they do.

orientation
Bright and early on the morning of Friday, August 17, the
brand new Blessing Residence Hall opened its doors and wel-
comed 239 members of the freshman class of 2006 to High Point
University. After a whirlwind summer of round-the-clock con-
struction, the 103,000+ square foot, $11 million, state-of-the-art
residence hall sparkled like a new penny. Freshmen and parents
were amazed at the first-class accommodations, as staff, faculty
and the OC (Orientation Crew) helped move boxes and bags and
crates and trunks into rooms. At the end of the day, 239 new
freshmen were settled into their new home in Blessing
Residence Hall.
In total, a record 540 freshmen moved-in over a two day peri-
od, which began a week of festivities highlighted by a concerts,
social events and speakers.
Freshmen and their families were happy to have members
of the "OC" assist with unloading. Here, Jacob Peters

freshmen to faculty, then Derby Day is its informal
counterpart; allowing freshmen and upperclassmen to meet
in the middle of an outdoor wonderland of activities. The
International Promenade is turned into a college student
playground equipped with a rock climbing wall, a giant
concert stage featuring 2 bands and student karaoke, and
even a water park! HPU students come out to meet old
friends, make new ones and enjoy the warm weather before
they focus their attention on academics.
With water activities dominating the Promenade,
students were treated to giant HPU beach towels among
other gifts, to make Derby Day even that much more special.

Inauguration of President Nido R. Qubein
and Familv and Alumni Weekend
HPU history books will forever report that the weekend of
October 4-8, 2006 was one of grandeur and pride on the campus
of High Point University. It was the occasion of the inauguration
of our seventh president - Dr. Nido R. Qubein - during our annu-
al fall Alumni & Family Weekend. Festivities were varied . . .
from a golf tournament and performance by a world-class magi-
cian, to special chapel services and student research symposium,
to a candlelit dinner and a formal black-tie gala. There was a
special performance by the legendary Drifters, and while the
soccer game got rained out and the picnic got moved indoors,
there was nothing soggy or dreary about the prevailing attitude
of those who made the journey here to enjoy the weekend. More
than 2500 people came to celebrate, and when the final good-
byes were said, the weekend was hailed as one of the most
spectacular events in the life of High Point University.

graduation 2007
On Saturday morning May 5, a special energy perme-
ated the High Point University campus as graduates, fam-
ilies and friends of the university gathered for the com-
mencement ceremony of the HPU class of 2007. While a
light mist threatened to move the festivities indoors, the
weather couldn't dampen the spirits of the nearly 8,000
people gathered on the front lawn of Roberts Hall. The
ceremony continued outside, and as the 9 a.m. proces-
sional began, almost 700 graduates began their march
towards the lawn in front of Roberts Hall.
Bill Cosby, the man many of the students watched
during their childhood as Dr. Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby
Show, gave the commencement address. Wearing a HPU
baseball cap with a commencement tassel attached,
Cosby kept the crowd laughing with anecdotes from his
childhood and reflections from his life. In a lighter
moment, he advised graduates to simply "get a job." On a
more serious note, he encouraged graduates to follow
their dream and to be responsible.
Cosby joins the elite ranks of the university's recent
commencement speakers; the past two years have

of the HPU Athletics department. Both lacrosse programs will enjoy their first full
