The faces of achievement: General Studies
students attend class

THE WAY TO ACHIEVEMENT

We congratulate you, the graduating class of 1990. The attainment of your
Bachelor of Science degree from the Division of General Studies, a significant
achievement in itself, is especially meaningful, since it was earned by so many of
you while maintaining and advancing in full-time professional careers and man-
aging the real demands of a family.

We pay tribute to your industry, intellect and commitment to your goals. We
fervently hope that your degree will open the way to new and significant achieve-
ments in this new decade and in the years beyond.

The Members of the Administration, Faculty, and Staff of the Division of

General Studies.

To The Graduates of 1990: °eneral s,uf *

Graduation is a ceremony that marks both a successful completion and the beginning ot a

new challenge. . . c.

Looking back, you can reflect on the ways in which you have changed in your time at s>t.
Joesph's You are in possession of increased knowledge, enhanced self-confidence, and
credentials declaring you prepared for additional professional responsibility. More than this
however you have moved your development forward in fundamental ways. For those ot
you who have taken full advantage of your time at the College, you have undergone an
empancipatory experience that has moved you closer to the worldview described as

Looking to the future takes on special significance given that you are the first graduating
class of a new decade. It is our hope that you will use the time before you in ways that will
improve yourselves, your loved ones, and the world at large. In short, you have the
opportunity to push for a personal and social evolution that will be worthy of the Twenty-
first Century. ^ . _ . . „M

As I have done in the past, I would like to extend appreciation to Daniel Bern for ^once
again taking charge of the yearbook effort to bring forward this excellent ACHIEVEMENT
1990. Thanks also to S. Carole Lessard for assisting in this effort. Together they have given

us the best General Studies yearbook to date.

Congratulations,

Thomas G. Travis, Dean

To The Graduates of 1990,

The realization of a truly memorable yearbook requires the energy and input
of many individuals. I want to express my deep appreciation to all those who
participated in the development of this our eighth yearbook. In particular, I must
thank Mary Edwards, Imelda Forrester-Evans, George Lowe, Kevin McKenna,
and David Velma, for their creative contributions.

I would also like to extend special thanks to Sister Carole Lessard, Sadie
McMillan, and Rosita Gonzalez whose administrative support made ACHIEVE-
MENTS' 90 such a success.

Sincerely,

RETURNING TO COLLEGE

BY GEORGE C. LOWE

THE CLASS OF 1990

I never intended to take ten years off from college. So when I
decided to complete my studies it was a big decision. My choice to
attend Saint Joseph's was influenced by the positive feedback of a
satisfied student. At Saint Joseph's I found an atmosphere that
inspired me to earn success. I think of the College faculty and staff
as warm and sincere. The faculty established itself as honest and
knowledgeable. This environment is positively charged. I regularly
take the issues discussed in our classes back to my workplace and
home. Now I am in a position to recommend a college: I recom-
mend Saint Joseph's.

AN APPRECIATION

BY MARY EDWARDS

THE CLASS OF 1990

I wish to express my sincere thanks and grateful appreciation to
the faculty of Saint Joseph's College. Of all the fine things about
the College, the attitude of its faculty impressed me most. Their
hard work and dedication is a clear demonstration of exceptional
commitment to the students - whatever they can do to further
your career goals they'll do.

I am proud to be a graduate of Saint Joseph's College.

RESOLUTION

BY VELMA DAVID

THE CLASS OF 1990

I began Saint Joseph's College in the spring of 1988. And, what a
nervous wreck I thought I would be by the end of the first semes-
ter. But somehow, I am here completing my final semester and
preparing for graduation. I am the mother of five children, two
boys and three girls, and a wife, with a full-time job. Yet I am here
ready to graduate! I tell you this because you too can make it.
Forget about the storms: we all have them. Learn to ride the
waves and achieve your goals.

EDUCATION FOR THE FUTURE

BY IMELDA FORRESTER-EVANS

THE CLASS OF 1990

I graduated from nursing school about ten years ago. I started at
Saint Joseph's College and then stopped for one year. Then I
decided to return and complete what I had started.

I am really glad that I chose Saint Joseph's. The classes are
warm and friendly and we are treated as individuals with respect.

I am proud of myself. It was hard, but what I've learned at Saint
Joseph's will shape my future career goals.

GENERAL STUDIES STUDENTS TO

VISIT SAINT LUCIA TO STUDY

HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

As ACHIEVEMENTS '90 goes to press, we are happy to an-
nounce that General Studies students enrolled in CHA 501/502,
Field Study in International Health Care Systems under Victor
Brown, will pay a health care fact finding trip to the Caribbean
Island of Saint Lucia, this spring. This visit will enable students to
learn about the infrastructure of the health care delivery system of
this country as well as provide cultural enrichment. Students en-
rolled in CHA 501/502 may receive college credit for this exper-
ience.

TRANSITIONS

BY DOROTHY HOWARD

THE CLASS OF 1990

And how long have you been working towards your degree?
Sometimes I could swear it's been eighty years — but, in truth,
it only seems that long.

I have been working toward a degree, sporadically, since my
graduation from high school in 1971. At graduation, I was so
envious of friends who were making the transition from high
school to college — going on, uninterrupted, to earn their
degree. There were many unexpected detours on my road to a
degree — the necessity to earn an immediate living, a mar-
riage, a relocation, a divorce, yet another relocation — and
somehow, these took precedence over my longing to earn a
degree. But I was ever hopeful.

Some years ago, I found my way to St. Joseph's. Deter-
mined to make this opportunity work, I squeezed classes in on
weekends and stretched my work week to include term papers
and required readings. I was pleased with my progress and
unwilling to entertain any further detours.

I found myself facing old demons, however, when my neph-
ew, Rob, was born. The envy I had harbored against those
long-ago classmates who sailed smoothly on to college
prompted me to open a bank account in trust for Rob's
college tuition. In the manner of many a doting relation, I
vowed that my much-loved nephew would not have to post-
pone studies for lack of funds, or struggle to attend classes
after work. The urge to provide for him in this way arose, I
think, from the overriding value I attributed to that smooth

30

TRANSITIONS

(Continued)

transition denied me.

Lately, however, I have been reflecting on my experiences
here at St. Joseph's, and discovering an appreciation for the
rather erratic course my own studies have taken over the
years. In retrospect, I benefited from the passage of time
which enabled me to define my goals, consider alternatives
and choose a personal lifestyle.

In particular, I find myself appreciating my classmates,
struggling like myself to juggle responsibilities while maintaining
a grasp on a very personal goal. In class after class, their
thoughtful comments — flowing from their own much-lived
lives — challenged me to think beyond my own experience.

And so, if in years to come, my nephew finds himself side-
tracked and, like his aunt, enters college during his "30-some-
thing" years, I will be there to assure him that, whatever he
may lose in terms of continuity, he will surely gain in an educa-
tion enhanced by the experience of his own and his class-
mates' fully-lived lives, and the glimpse of worlds otherwise
unknown.

In parting, this is my "thank you" to those students (and
instructors, as well) who took the time to share the totality of
their life experiences, their cultural and ethnic heritages, their
unique point of view — and, in so doing, immeasurably en-
riched the achievement of my long-pursued goal.
