ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE

By Madelyn Arrich
The Class of 1993

After receiving my nursing degree, I thought about returning to school to obtain
my Bachelor's degree. Over the years, I had even enrolled in several collegiate
programs. I found them to invariably be large institutions, where I was known by my
I.D. number, and where I could walk through a sea of unfamiliar faces, before I could
find one friendly face I recognized.

However, several co-workers who began attending St. Joseph's College gave me
glowing reports about the school. With the feeling of "here I go again," I walked in to
the General Studies office and received a real surprise. There at the receptionist's
desk sat Sadie McMillan, and she was smiling. Then I met Suzanne Trappier, and as
she extended her hand to greet me, she was smiling too. I knew instinctively this was
the place for me, and I enrolled at Saint Joseph's.

Among the instructors I have been fortunate to have, during my time here, have
been Rupert Campbell, calm, caring, and concerned, and Hayward Gill, who was
always involved with his students. With a twinkle in his eye, he made learning fun

and educational. Yvonne Greatheart - whose name says it all - although in the midst
of great adversity always extended herself to her students. Bob Dunn was always
eager to listen, to empathize, and to take that extra step for the betterment of his
students. Anthony Summers, stern of manner, and large of heart, was always eager
to impart his knowledge of the health care system, and not to forget Daniel Beni,
whose kind, quiet manner, and caring acceptance, encouraged me to freely explore,
to question, and to learn.

Upon reflection, I have so many wonderful memories to take with me as I prepare
to graduate in June: memories of counselors, instructors, and students, with whom I
have shared a very large part of my life over the last few years. My time at Saint
Joseph's has taught me that acquiring an education can be a desirous growing
experience - and not the impersonal event that I knew it to be. This knowledge has
led me to the determination to continue my education and to earn my Master's
degree.

To The Graduates of 1993,

While graduation fronn college is always a significant event, it is especially so when the
graduate is an adult with family and professional responsibilities. In your years at St.
Joseph's, you have taken upon yourself a task of great magnitude. You worked long hours
and made great sacrifices.

From the vantage point of completion, you have an accurate sense of all that you put
into this effort as will as a keen insight into the many good things that have transpired
during this time. As a person you have grown. Professionally, you have acquired
knowledge which will enable you to make an even greater contribution to society and,
never to be underestimated, you have a clearer appreciation for all the love and support
provided by your family, friends, and teachers.

Once again, I want to extend special appreciation to Daniel Beni and S. Carole Lessard
for their tireless efforts to make this our eleventh yearbook, a standard for the future.
They join me in the hope that Achievements 1993 will rekindle fond memories of a time
now past — but not forgotten.

Congratulations.

Victor Brown, Chairperson of
Health Administration, makes a
telling point to his class in

To The Graduating Class of 1993,

The development of a great yearbook requires the efforts and unique
talents of many individuals. I would like to express deep appreciation to all
those who contributed to the realization of this, our eleventh yearbook. In
particular, I need to thank Madelyn Arrich, Vida Brobbey, Marsha Griffin,
Christine Masucci, Steven Odam and Deborah Walker for their thoughtful
contributions.

I also owe thanks to Sister Carole Lessard and Sadie McMillan, whose
support has made ACHIEVEMENTS '93 a singular success.

I salute the graduates of 1993. May all of your achievements be bright
and bold and the memories you have had here last a lifetime.

Cordially,

A FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE

By Steven Odam
The Class of 1993

As a result of my studies at Saint Joseph's College, I have gained a greater
understanding of my role as an urban police officer in society, through self-analysis
and an increased comprehension of the underlying causes that create some of the
social conditions which I face in the community. Each day I have gained perspective
and the ability to make well thought-out and informed decisions. I also now have
developed a greater empathy for those I serve and a greater appreciation of and
tolerance for the diverse cultural and ethnic groups that make up New York City's
beautiful mosaic.

AN INVITATION TO LEARNING

By Marsha Ruth Paris Griffin
The Class of 1993

UPON OPENING MY MAILBOX -

ON ONE OF MY "NOT-SO-HAPPY DAYS,"

STJOSEPH'S SAID, "COME."

I CAME. I SAW. I CONQUERED.

I CAME TO A PLACE OF LEARNING,

I SAW - INSTRUCTORS WHO CARE,

I CONQUERED - WHAT I DESIRED

TO ACHIEVE.
NOW - I AM MORE THAN A CONQUEROR.

I AM HAPPY, I AM BLESSED.

My EXPERIENCES AT ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE

By Christine Masucci Anderson
The Class of 1993

My experiences of College, at St. Joseph's, have been all positive and dynamic.
St. Joseph's provided me with flexible scheduling and an array of courses that met
my needs as a working professional. The dynamic teaching styles of professors
Yvonne Greatheart, Corinne Gamper, Daniel Beni and Maude Robinson, in
particular, energized me to pursue and achieve my educational goals.

A GATEWAY TO LIFE

By Vida Brobbey
The Class of 1993

Although I live in the Bronx, I have always looked forward, with great anticipation,
to attending my classes at St. Joseph's College. I have developed critical thinking
and problem solving skills, and am now more non-judgmental in my professional
decisions. In particular, I found Adults In Transition to truly be a gateway to a more
meaningful life. I recommend it to everyone.

Long live St. Joseph's College!

A WARM COMMUNITY

By Deborah Walker
The Class of 1993

The environment at St. Joseph's College is that of a small and caring community.
The instructors and staff are supportive, and understanding of the adult learner
with job and family responsibilities. Everyone is willing to go that extra mile to help
you reach your goals. As I prepare to graduate in June, I know I will miss the
warmth of St. Joseph's College.
