CHRISTMAS   MORN.

2.

Round  that  tender  Infant,

Radiant  beams  are  spread,
For  the  holy  angels

Guard  His  lowly  bed.
While  the  wond'ring  shepherds

Come  with  Eastern  Kings,
Kneel  before  the  cradle

Where  the  Mother  sings.

2es, the Lord Who loves us,

Here  was  humbly  born,
Coming  down  to  save  us,

As  on  Christmas  morn.
L?t  us  bow  before  Him,

At  the  manger-throne,
There  behold  the  Saviour,

Men  and  Angels  own.

2.

They looked up and saw a Star,
Shining in the East, beyond them far,
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.

Nowell,  &c.

3-

And by the light of that same Star,
Three  Wisemen  came  from  country  far;
To seek for a King was their intent,
And to follow the Star wherever it went.

Nowell,  &c.

This Star drew nigh to the north-west,
O'er Bethlehem it took its rest,
And there it did both stop and stay, '
Right over the place where Jesus lay,

Nowell,  &c.

Then entered in those Wisemen three,
Full  reverently  upon  their  knee,
And offered there, in His Presence,
Their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense.

Nowell,  &c.

6.

Then let us all with one accord,
Sing praises to our Heavenly Lord,
That hath made Heaven and earth of nought,
And with His Blood mankind hath bought.

Nowell,  &c.

Tenor  Solo.

Treble  Solo.

2.

"Hither, page, and stand by me,

If  thou  know'st  it,  telling,
Yonder  peasant,  who  is  he?

Where  and  what  his  dwelling?"
"Sire, he lives a good league hence,

Underneath  the  mountain;
Right  against  the  forest  fence,

By  Saint  Agnes'  fountain."

Tenor Solo. "Bring me flesh, and bring me wine,
Bring  me  pine-logs  hither;
Thou and I will see him dine,
When  we  bear  them  thither."
Chorus. Page and monarch forth they went,
Forth  they  went  together;
Through  the  rude  wind's  wild  lament;
And  the  bitter  weather.

Treble Solo. "Sire, the night is darker now,

And  the  wind  blows  stronger;
Fails my heart, I know not how,
I  can  go  no  longer."
Tenor Solo. "Mark my footsteps, my good page
Tread  thou  in  them  boldly:
Thou shalt find the winter's rage
Freeze  thy  blood  less  coldly."

5-

Chorus. In his master's steps he trod,

Where  the  snow  lay  dinted;
Heat was in the very sod

Which  the  saint  had  printed.
Therefore,  Christian  men,  be  sure,

Wealth  or  rank  possessing,
Ye who now will bless the poor,

Shall  yourselves  find  blessing.

In  Bethlehem,  in  Jewry,

This  blessed  Babe  was  born,

And  laid  within  a  manger,
Upon  this  blessed  morn;

The  which  His  Mother  Mary,
Did  nothing  take  in  scorn.

0  tidings,  &c.

From  God  our  Heavenly  Father.

A  blessed  Angel  came;
And  unto  certain  Shepherds

Brought  tidings  of  the  same:
How that in Bethlehem was born

The Son of God by Name.
0  tidings,  &c.

"Fear not then," said the Angel,
"Let  nothing  you  aflright,

This day is born a Saviour
Of  a  pure  Virgir  bright,

To free all those who trust in Him
From  Satan's  power  and  might."
O  tidings,  &c.

The  shepherds  at  those  tidings

Rejoiced  much  in  mind,
And  left  their  flocks  a-feeding,

In  tempest,  storm,  and  wind:
And went to Bethlehem straightway, '

The Son of God to find.

O  tidings,  &c.

And when they came to Bethlehem
Where  our  dear  Saviour  lay,

They found Him in a manger,
Where  oxen  feed  on  hay;

His  Mother  Alary  kneeling  down,
Unto  the  Lord  did  pray.

O  tidings,  &c.

Now to the Lord sing praises,

All  you  within  this  place,
And with true love and brotherhood

Each  other  now  embrace;
This  holy  tide  of  Christmas

All  other  doth  deface.

Sleep, holy Babe! Thine Angels watch around,
All bending low with folded wings,
Before the Incarnate King of kings,

In  reverent  awe  profound.

3-

Sleep, Holy Babe! while I with Mary gaze
In joy upon that Face awhile,
Upon  the  loving  infant  smile

Which  there  divinely  plays.

Sleep,  holy  Babe!  ah!  take  Thy  brief  repose;
Too quickly will Thy slumbers break,
And Thou to lengthened pains awake,

That  Death  alone  shall  close.

2 For Christ is born of Mary,

And  gathered  all  above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keep

Their  watch  of  wondering  love.
0  morning  stars,  together

Proclaim  the  holy  birth!
And praises sing to God the King

And peace to men on earth.

3  How  silently,  how  silently,

The  wondrous  gift  is  given!

So God imparts to human hearts

The  blessings  of  His  heaven.

No ear may hear His coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receiveHim still,
The  dear  Christ  enters  in."

4 O holy Child of Bethlehem!
Descend  to  us,  we  pray;
Cast out our sin, and enter in,

Be  born  in  us  to-day.
We  hear  the  Christmas  angels
The  great  glad  tidings  tell;
Oh come to us, abide with us,
Our  Lord  Emmanuel!    Amen.

P.  Brooke.
