"John and Nathakiel Merrill, brothers, came from Salis-
bury County, Wilts, England, to Ipswich, Mass., in 1633,
and settled at Newbury in the same colony among the first
settlers of that town. They are descended from the Hu-
guenot family of DeMerle who escaped to England after
the St. Bartholome;v Day (Aug. 1572). This Family of
DeMerle belonged to the Auvergue nobility having had
its ancestral estate near Place-db-Djmb-^s in that province.
The emigrant made use of the arras we give which are
different (although the crest is the same) from the Merrill
Arras as given by the English works of heraldry."

"We havs seen imprints of the &eal of one of the emigrant's
grandsons '-i' affixed to a deed dated 1726. The devi-ies were
exactly those we give." (From America Heraldica.)
