'ROUND AND ABOUT THE SCHOOL

The School slipped into running gear smoothly — as though it had
never stopped. Enrolment stands at 299 (267 boarders). Academic Staff
numbers 25. There are the inevitable changes in personnel — both Staif
and Boys. Among the newcomers to Staff are two O.B's — Bill Skinner ('47)
M.A. (U. of T.) and Grant Edwards ('54). Bill is teaching English, and
Grant,  mainly  geography.  Garry  West,  B.A.,  B.P.H.E.  —  P.T.  and  Science;
Robert Scott, B.A. (Western) — English; James Jenson, B.A. (Western) —Eng-
lish; Gaspar Guggino, B.A. (Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa) — Classics. Mrs.
H. H. Tuckley — graduate in Arts and Library Science is School Librarian.
Football is snorting along. New staff members are showing keen coaching
interest. Grant Edwards is working with Aub Holmes on 1st Team which
has shown up well in exhibition games played so far with Appleby (a win)
Thornhill (a win) and St. Michael's (a loss). The Seconds are being coached
by Bill Skinner, Thirds (U16A) by Garry West, Under IBB (4th) by Gaspar
Guggino. U15A (5th) by Robt. Scott, U15B (6th) by Jack Wright. There are
School Soccer Teams in competition with other Schools, and Clan teams
playing in an intra-mural league. In Academics, the Class of '63 did well
in Departmental Examinations and most of it is at university — next
issue will tell you where (we hope!) The honour of being Head Boy
for 1962-63 went to Robt. J. Swinden who attained highest standing in
the Departmental Examinations, and also won the Pat Strathy Memorial
Scholarship to Trinity College. (And while we're at it — How about a
round-up list of Andreans who are at your university? And the courses
they are taking?) The School went en masse (Grade 9 up) to Stratiord
to a performance of "Cyrano de Bergerac" and enjoyed it very much.
Work has begun on "H.M.S. Pinafore" (G & S) which all being well will
be presented in the Spring. Gordon Moffat ('26) is actively at work with
the Camera Club. Intra-mural tilts have shown possibilities of a strong
Debating Team this year. There is a fair number of talented musicians
in the School and the sound of music — both popular and classical — is
to be heard at any time possible in The Ketchum Auditorium. Fencing
is under way with a stronger nucleus of experienced participants. 'Round
and about these Andrean precincts — this stockpile of energy, spiritual,
mental and physical — power continues to be generated and consumed
at a phenomenal rate!

"NAMED" CHAIRS FOR THE GREAT HALL

The idea seems to have "taken" and many names of Old Andreans
(boys and masters) have been perpetuated in carving on chair backs in
the dining hall. As well — with each name — the cost of the new Andrean
facilities has been shared by the donor of the chair. There it is — your
chair — tangible evidence of that fine tradition which is Andrean —
with the Andrean name of your choice inscribed on it — a permanent
part of the fabric of the school. Interested in the idea? Had your forgotten
about it? Think about it! The number of chairs available will decrease
steadily.
