to make the world's books discoverablc online.
It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subjcct
to copyright or whose legai copyright terni has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books
are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that's often difficult to discover.
Marks, notations and other maiginalia present in the originai volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book's long journcy from the
publisher to a library and finally to you.
Usage guidelines
Google is proud to partner with librarìes to digitize public domain materials and make them widely accessible. Public domain books belong to the
public and we are merely their custodians. Nevertheless, this work is expensive, so in order to keep providing this resource, we have taken steps to
prcvcnt abuse by commercial parties, including placing lechnical restrictions on automated querying.

translation, optical character recognition or other areas where access to a laige amount of text is helpful, please contact us. We encouragc the
use of public domain materials for these purposes and may be able to help.
+ Maintain attributionTht GoogX'S "watermark" you see on each file is essential for informingpcoplcabout this project and helping them lind
additional materials through Google Book Search. Please do not remove it.
+ Keep it legai Whatever your use, remember that you are lesponsible for ensuring that what you are doing is legai. Do not assume that just
because we believe a book is in the public domain for users in the United States, that the work is also in the public domain for users in other
countiies. Whether a book is stili in copyright varies from country to country, and we cani offer guidance on whether any specific use of
any specific book is allowed. Please do not assume that a book's appearance in Google Book Search means it can be used in any manner

invitiamo a contattarci. Incoraggiamo l'uso dei materiali di pubblico dominio per questi scopi e potremmo esserti di aiuto.
+ Conserva la filigrana La "filigrana" (watermark) di Google che compare in ciascun file è essenziale per informare gli utenti su questo progetto

PREFACE
At the request of many of my scholars, I bave
been induced to compile this little book, in which,
amongst otber things, I bave collected ali tbe
words and questions constantly asked me by my
pupiis.
In my long experience as a teacher of Italìan,
I bave often remarked tbe unfitness for practical
use of tbe so called '* Interpreters, Manuals of
Conversation etc. ,, in whicb tbe student, after
an inflnity of trouble in searcbing, eitber fails to
find wbat be wants, or finds it expressed in sucb
a manner as to be useless for bis purpose.
To obviate tbis inconvenience I bave adopted
a systematic alpbabetical metbod, givin^ only tbe
words and pbrases adapted to supply tbe needs
of travellers. Tbe sbort conversational part con-
tains but few answers : as it would obviously be
impossible to anticipate tbe different modes of
reply. Every cbapter begins witb a vocabulary
of words relati ng to tbe topic treated in it ; and
a good many of tbese words, altbougb in common
use, are not to be found correctly translated in
tbe ordinary Dictionaries. Especial care bas been
— 4 —
taken in the revision of the words and sentences
in both languages.
I trust that this little hook, wihch can be used
both as an Interpreter and a Dictionary, may con-
tribute to the pleasure and improvement of the
English students of Italian.
PREFACE TO THE SEVENTH EDITION
Six editions of the '* Italian Companion and In-
terpreter ,, having been quickly exausted, a sev-
enth edition is now called for: and this is, I
think, the best evidence that it has answeréd the
purpose I had in wiew in writing it. Pronouns,
the principal difficulty of the Italian Language^
have been more clearly and adequately ex-
plained ; words and phrases carefully revised.
In the present edition the conversational part
of the hook has been given in the S^ person sjn-
gular, as this is now the form of addressing
people generally used in Italy.

PRELIMINARY REMARKS
Most Italian words ha ve the stress or tonic
accent on the last syllable but one. But wish-
ing to obviate any doubt and at the sarae
tirae to help the student in distinguishing be-
tween the dose and open sound of the vowels
e and o, we will mark with an accent either
acute ( ') or grave (*) ali the vowels on which
the stress is to be laid, using the first accent
to indicate the dose sound, and the latter the
open one.
The mordern and most generally used form of
addressing people in Italian is the 3^ person singu-
lar Ella (she) Lei (her) for both genders : this rep-
resents Vossignoria, a contraction of Vostra Signoria
{Your Lordship) V. S. in writing. The rule is to
use Ella for the subject (nominative case) and Lei
as the object {accusative case) Es. : Ella è molto
gentile. You are very kind; Verrò da Lei. 1 shall
come to you; but conversationally Lei is now indis-
criminately used. Ex.: Come sta Ella or Come sta
Lei ? How are you ?
The 2^ person plural Voi {you) is used to peasants,
cabraen and porters ; in mercantile corrospondence
and very often in literature. The 2^ person sin-
gular Tu (thou) is used to relations, intimate friends,
children, and our own servane s when long in the
familv.

Pronnnciation — Pronùncia.
The Italian Language is spelt exactly as written,
and must he pronounced clearly and distìnctly; an
ambjguous sound of the final vowel of a word might
cbange ìts signìfication, or the gender and number of
a noun, as for istance : Séta silk, séte thirst ; maè-
stro teacher, maèstra lady teacher ; bicchière glasi^,
bicchièri glasses.
— 11 —
Another point requires parti cular attention, and
that ìs, to sound carefully the doublé consonante, as in
the words carro cart and fatto made, not to confound
them with caro dear, and fato fate.
Table of vowels.
a like a in father padre.
e has two sounds; open and dose, apèrto e chièsa:
gelose like a in date data, véro true, vénti iioenty ;
e open like e in beli campanello, è is, vènto ivind.
Note: e at the end of a word is never silent in
Itali an.
i like ee in green vérde; spillo pin, dito finger,
o like e has two sounds, open and dose.
dose like o in bone osso, sótto under, nóme name;
open like o in or (o) còllo neck. Pòsta Pos^ Office.
u like 00 in moon luna, lume %A^.
Table of consonants.
b, f, k, 1, m, n, p, q, t, r, y as in English.
e before a, o, u, l, r, sounds as in English ;
» » e as c^ in chess {scacchi), céna supper,
céra wax ;
» » i as chee le cheerful {allégro), cinque five,
cima top.
che dCQ ke in kettle {ramino), perché because, why.
chi as kee in keep {tenére), chièsa church, chièdere,
to ask.
g before a, o, u, as in English;
» » e as in general {generale) gentile kind;
» i as i in gin ginépro, gingillo trifle.
h is never aspirated ; it is used between the letters
c-e, e-i, g^e, g-i to harden the sound of the e or g
In every other case it is not pronounced.
j as y in yes {si) principj principles.
— 12 —
8 as in English ai the commencement of a word:
sale salt, and generally soft between two vowels;
rosa rose, scusi / heg your pardon.
Note. In the words casa house, còsa thing, the
s is slbìlant.
se before e, i, like ah in shell {conchiglia). Ex : scèna
scene, scéndere to go down, scimmia monkey.
sca, SCO, Bcu like skah, skaw, skóo : scàia stair case.
z has two sounds ; soft and sharp, dolce e aspro :
z soft as ds in Windsor; zanzara mosquito;
z sharp as ^^ in nets reti, prèzzo price, zio uncle.
No lettor is silent in Italian ; it is however to be
remarked that the vowel % when placed between
c^a, C'O, C'U, g-a, g-o, g-u to soften the sound of
e or ^ is scarceiy audible.
Accenta. — Accènti.
The accent commonly used in Italian is the grave
one (^) and is placed:
I. On the last vowel of some words ending in
tà or t^; to mark a contraction, as : bontà goodness
(formerJy bontàde), gioventù youth (for gioventùde),
verità truth (for veritàde) virtù virtue (for virtùde),
città town (for cittàde), schiavitù slavery (for schia-
vitùde).
II. It is found also in the S^ person singular of
the past definite tense, provi ded that the 1'' person
ends with two vowels, as.: Egli amò Heloved; io
amai, / loved,
III. The P* and 3^ person singular of the future
tense always take the grave accent. Ex.: Io darò,
1 toill give ; Egli darà, He tvill give.
IV. The grave accent is also placed over the
following words in order to distinguish them from
others written in the same manner but of a diiferent
meaning:
- 13 —
dà, he gives
da from
è is
e a«c?
di day
di .of
là /Agre
la //(é
né nor
ne of it
sé himself
se if.
V. Besides these, monosyllables and dissyllables
in which two vowels enter forming a diphthohg, as
well as perché * why or because, cosi so, take the
accent, that they may be pronouneed with more vi-
bration :
qui here giù down
quaggiù here below
più more può he can
laggiù yonder.
A sharp accent (French accent aigu) (') and a cir-
cumflex Q are seldom met with in Italian. Some
authors occasionai ly use the former when a mis-
understanding might possibly arise, as between the
words balia nurse and balia power ^ and the other
accent in poetry, to mark an elision of a whole syllable,
as for instance: cacciar, for cacciarono they drove
away,*
Apostrophe and Dlphthongs. — Apòstrofe e Dittònghi.
An apostrophe is used to indicate that the final vow-
el has been elided, which commonly happens when
the following word begins with another vowel, as for
instance: l'amico the friend, ìnsiesid of lo amico.
There are no real diphthongs in Italian, since if
two or three vowels are in juxtaposition, the stress
falls on one of them, but the others are also clearly
although rapidly pronouneed; as: nuòvo new, buoi
oxen, uova eggs.
* In -writing this word perché the grave accent on the final e must
be always marked, although in speaking, the vowel is to be pro-
nouneed closed.

The indefinite articles are : un or uno masculine,
una feminine (a, an)
lo pi. gli (the) uno (a or an) are* used :

another consonant (Italian s iiiipura). Ex: lo spillo
the pin, gli spilli the pins.

the article and an apostrophe substituted, as : l'olio
the oli; l'esèmpio the example. The article masculine
plural gli, does not admit elision of the i, except before
words beginning with t; as: gl'Inglési the Ènglishmen.
III. before z, afi : lo zio the uncle, gli zìi the uncles
il pi. i (the) un (a or an) are used before ali words

by the definite article, as : il mio baùle, my trunk
or nty box; è mio, it is mine.
— 19 —
IL They must agree with the thing possessed
and not as in English, with the possessor: and have
to be repeated before each noun. Ex: La sua cà-
mera, hi8 bed room ; il suo vestito e le sue scarpe,
her dress and shoes,
IlL The definite article is not used before them
when they are immediately followed (but only in
the singular) by titles of dignity or nouns signifying
near relations. Ex : Sua Maestà disse a sua Altézza,
His Majesty said to His Hìghness. Mio padre e mio
fratèllo, my father and hrothei\ But if the noun is
preceded by an adjective, then the article is used.
Ex : La nòstra cara zia, our dear aunt. The article
is always retai ned before loTO^ their. Ex: Il lóro
fratèllo, their brother; quésti coltèlli non sono i lóro,
these kuives are not theirs,
IV. When possessive pronouns follow the verb
to be, èssere, and the sentence means to helong to,
the article is omitted. Ex: Quel libro è mio, that
book is mine,

fìòU vói, éisif «sstf, are g^enerally omitted, and only expressed when
required to prevent any mjsunderstandlng: in the meaning^, or to
add more emphasis to the sentence. But It Is advisabie that the
student, when first iearning: the verbs, shouid prefix them for the
salce of practice.
