COUNCIL OF PLANNING LIBRARIANS EXCHANGE BIBLIOGRAPHY #199
ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH CENTERS: An Annotated Directory
William C. Miller
Assistant Professor of Architecture
College of Architecture
University of Arizona
When discussing architectural research, the range of research concerns
currently engaged in are quite varied. The concerns include, for example,
behavioral applications to design; computer applications to design; housing;
industrialization and building systems; educational and health care facili-
ties; building science, technology, and construction; environmental controls;
urban design, analysis, and planning; and man-environment relationships, to
name only a few. To make the situation even more complex, those engaged in
research include individuals, architectural firms, university based research
centers, and non-university based research centers. There are now confer-
ences and periodicals solely devoted to architectural research and research
oriented work. Directories and listings of individuals and centers engaged
in particular areas of research are available. The amount of architectural
research being undertaken is constantly expanding.
To better understand what type of architectural research is being done
and where it is being done, the author initiated a survey of existing
architectural research centers. The intent of the survey was twofold.
First, was to locate and identify those centers engaged in architectural
research. Second, itfas to inquire as to the center's major research concerns
and to the availability of publications and research reports, to establish
which centers publish regularly scheduled periodicals, and to locate new
centers. The survey did not attempt to isolate individuals involved in
architectural research due to the complex and difficult task this would
have presented. The results of the survey comprise the contents of this
directory. The directory contains those centers which have responded to
the survey as of the time of publication (which represents approximately
a 1$% response) .
Due to the varied concerns of architectural research, the survey (and
this directory) attempted not to discriminate against any particular area of
research. Because of this, the centers listed here represent the full
range of architectural research being conducted currently. Those centers
conducting social science and behavioral related research, as well as those
conducting building science, technology and construction related research
are included. The purpose is to include all centers that responded to the
survey and not to favor one particular type of research concern over another.
This is why the directory is annotated. The annotations describe the major
research concerns of each center. This easily identifies each individual
center and its particular concerns. An index is provided and is organized
by research concerns to enable those interested in one particular area of
research to easily identify the centers doing that type of research.
By including centers engaged in all areas of architectural research, this
directory will be more comprehensive and have xader appeal.
2 CPL Exchange Bibliography #199
There are three sections to this directory. They are: (1) centers
engaged in architectural research; (2) periodicals containing information
concerning architectural research; and (3) directories containing archi-
tectural research center information. The architectural research center
section includes the name and location of each center in addition to its
major research concerns. The index at the end of the section lists the
centers according to research concerns. The periodical section lists
newsletters and journals regularly containing research results and research
oriented information. The directory section accomplishes two things.
First, it gives reference to locating research centers and organizations
not contained in this directory. Secondly, it contains directories
naming individuals engaged in various aspects of architectural research.
Every entry in the three sections is annotated. Each of the three sections
contains a more detailed description of its organization and its contents.
The author would appreciate, at any time, information concerning any
architectural research center not appearing in this directory. He would
also like to thank those individuals and centers that kindly gave the
information and reports from which this directory was developed.
3 CPL Exchange Bibliography #199
CENTERS ENGAGED IN ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH
The architectural research centers herein listed contain the following
information concerning each center: the name of the center; the center's
affiliation (if applicable) ; the center's address; the major research
concerns! the name of any regularly published journal, newsletter, or
directory; and if publications of project results are available.
The centers are organized into three categories; (1) University based
centers in the U.S.; (2) Non-university based centers in the U.S.; and (3)
Foreign research centers by country. Each category is assigned a code
number series, and each center is assigned a code number. The code number
series are assigned as follows:
University based centers in the U.S. - 100 series,
Non-university based centers in the U.S. - 200 series,
Foreign research centers by country - 300 series.
The code numbers for the individual centers have two purposes. The first
is for identification of the center and the category into which it is
classified. Secondly, it eases the indexing problem. The "Index of
Research Concerns" found at the end of the center listings contains the
major research concerns for all the centers. The centers are then listed
by their code number after all the research concerns the center is engaged
in. This allows those interested in one aspect of research to isolate
easily those centers engaged in that particular aspect.

Over the past several years, journals and newsletters have been created
solely for the purpose of transmitting information concerning the various
aspects of architectural research. These periodicals are as varied in
content as the types of architectural research being conducted today.
Due to the diverse nature of architectural research, it becomes essential
to include a list of periodicals devoted to the publishing of research
findings. In this way, an individual or organization can keep in contact
with a particular area of interest or in the general trends of architectural
research.
The periodicals are listed alphabetically and annotated for content and
focus.
