History of Patchogue.

As this is the first Business and Resi-
dential Directorj^ of Patchogue it would
not be inappropriate to give a short
historical sketch of our beautiful little
city by the sea. as it is now appropri-
ately termed.

The site of Patchogue, between the
Patchogue river on the west and Swan
river on the east, containing about 475
acres, was lot No. 3, known as Pochaug
Neck, in a lottery sale made by
Humphrey Avery in 1758. It was bought
by Lefford I>elTords for a nominal sum,
the deeds for the same being acknowl-
edged on March 5, 1759. This lot was
situated south of Main street. All the
property north of this street at that
time was woodland and considered
comparatively of little value. But
Patchogue originally was built upon
lot No. 5, known as Short Neck, con-
taining about 175 acres, and was also
owned by Humphrey Avery, who on
February 27, 1759, deeded it to his son
Humphrey Avery, Jr. It was here that
the First Congregational, Methodist
and Roman Catholic churches were
erected, and it was here that the first
factory was built over one hundred
years ago, and it is here where
Patchogue's greatest industry, the lace
mills of the Patchogue Manufacturing
Company are now located.

Other important industries in Patch-
ogue are the planing and moulding
mills of E. Bailey & Sons, which is the
largest plant of its kind on Long Is-
land; Justus Roe & Sons, manufactur-
ers of surveyors' instruments, which

are used in every state in the union
and Canada; Hiscox's Chemical Works
and the Hygeia Ice Comany.

Two excellent newspapers are pub-
lished in Patchogue, the Argus, of
which this publication is a product, and
the Patchogue Advance.

Last, but not least, is our boat build-
ing industries, some of the fastest and
best yachts, according to their size, be-
ing turned out from the Patchogue
ship yards.

The name Patchogue is supposed to
be of Indian origin, as the Patchogue
tribe of Indians occupied the territory
extending fiom the present site of the
village to Canoe Place. The word
Patchogue has been interpreted as
meaning 'patches of water," which the
many lakes surrounding the village
tend to substantiate. The first settle-
ment of white men in Patchogue is
supposed to have been about 1753, they
coming here from New England.

Patchogue borders on the Great South
Bay at its widest point, it being only
four miles from the irregular Great
South Beach opposite, which checks
the Atlantic Ocean as it rolls on to the
northward. The Great South Bay af-
fords amusement to pleasure seekers,
and gives tone and vigor to over-
worked humanity. Across from its us-
ually unruffled bosoms, nestles among
the hills little places of resort where
a feast fit for a king, a paddle in still
waters, or a combat with foaming
breakers, may be indulged in.

Patchogue is situated on the Montauk
division of the Long Island Railroad,

fifty-four miles from New York City,
and which has now fourteen trains
each way every twenty-four hours. The
healthfulness of the location is beyond
question. Patchogue is surrounded by
four beautiful lakes, the famous Great
South Bay and inviting pine woods,
and its many picturesque scenes have
been immortalized by the brush of the
well known artist, Miss Irene K.
Jerome, who once lived here. Its beau-
tiful attractions have made Patchogue
a great summer resort, and it is to-d'iy
the best known and most popular
watering place on Long Island. There
is probably no place in the United
States where the death rate averages
lower.

The purest of water and a careful
local management insures a continu-
ance of the town's health-giving quali-
ties.

Patchogue is pleasantly laid out with
good, wide and shady streets. North
Ocean avenue. Ocean avenue and Main
street are paved with vitrified brick in
the business section. An efficcient po-
lice and fire department is maintained.
Patchogue is virtually a small city in
itself of about six thousand inhabitants
with all modern improvements, includ-
ing city water, electric lights, gas and
a free delivery of the mails daily.

Banking is one of the points which
stand prominently in Patchogue's
favor, for her banking institutions at
once place the brand of stability on the
community. There are three such in-
stitutions, which are managed by men
of shrewd judgment.

Patchogue has appropriately been

termed "A City of Homes." Rents are
fair, and buildings comparatively
cheap. Being only about an hour and
a half's ride from New York City, away
from the noise and bustle of business,
Patchogue is indeed a favored spot.
Patchogue and its inhabitants are pre-
pared to welcome any who propose to
malve this their seat of operations, and
to lend them every assistance which is
in their power. Patchogue is located
in one of the healthiest and most beau-
tiful regions on Long Island, which is
one of the most thriving sections of the
country, and possesses admirable rail-
road facilities. The future of Patch-
ogue is bright with the bow of promise.
The capitalists and business men will
be found neither stubbornly conserva-
tive nor rashly aggressive, but pursue
a policy resulting in the establishing
of a solid foundation.

The natural advantages and facilities
for manufacturing in Patchogue are
much better than is generally supposed.
It has fresh water lakes, which furniih
not only good water power, but soft,
pure water suitable for any and every
purpose. Patchogue river has been
deepened and widened, a breakwater
thrown out at the entrance, and al-
though further improvements are nec-
essary, we have an excellent harbci.
North of the railroad the river extends
one-third of a mile through the lov/-
lands to the main road, where it re-
ceives the overflow of the west lake.
No better location could be found for
mills and factories than along this
river. With unlimited grounds, abun-
dance of pure, fresh water, fuel and

raw material brought to their doors by
boat or rail, nothing more could be de-
sired for manufacturing.

There are no institutions worthier of
the appreciation and love of the com-
munity than the churches existing in
our midst. Identified with its earliest
growth, throbbing with its life, partici-
pating in its reverses, sharing its pros-
perity, they seem to be invested with a
personality to be loved and cherished
like one of our household. There has
never in the history of nations been an
intluence of such greatness as that
wielded by the church, and these noble
old traits one sees in mankind may be
attributed to the good influence that
our pastors and churches spread among
us. Patchogue has been particularly
blessed. Its pastors are men of talents,
christian zeal and eloquence. The de-
nominations represented are the Metho-
dist Elpiscopal, Episcopal, Congrega-
tional, Baptist and Roman Catholic.
All these various organizations are
working in parallel lines for the ad-
vancement of morality and righteous-
ness.

Secret societies are a blessing to
mankind, because they strengthen our
faith, intensify our love, and teach us
to exercise charity in word and deed
to all. They should be encouraged be-
cause they develop social and benevo-
lent affections; because they mitigate
without and annihilate within the vio-
lence of political and theological con-
troversy; because they afford the only
neutral ground upon which all ranks
and classes can meet in perfect equal-
ity and association without degrada-

tion or mortification, whether for pur-
poses of moral instruction or social in-
tercourse; because they see to their
members during sickness and alleviate
their wants in distress. Such societies
are well supported in Patchogue, the
orders represented being the Masons,
Odd Fellows, Foresters of America.
Royal Arcanum, Junior Order United
American Mechanics, Grand Army of
the Republic, and Knights of Colum-
bus.

The advantages and facilities of
Patchogue in the educational depart-
ment of economy are unsurpassed by
those of any other place on Long Is-
land and is a happy commentary on the
character of the people that the schools
are largely attended, and a degree of
proficiency attained that tells better
than words how faithful, consistent
and able are the efforts of the principal.
Dr. W. E. Gordon, and the corps of effi-
cient teachers.

Patchogue can truly pride herself up-
on having the finest and best appointed
hotels on Ijoug Island, outside of Great-
er New Yorlc, well equipped with all
modern improvements. The stores of
Patchogue are fine, substantial struc-
tures of frame and brick, which are
indeed a credit to any town.

The south side of Long Island in gen-
eral and Patchogue in particular, is the
wheelmen's paradise. All of our streets
are in excellent condition and fine
paths lead in all directions.
