Full text of "Atlas of the geography and history of the ancient world;"

This is a digital copy of a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google as part of a project
to make the world's books discoverable online.

It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject
to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books
are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that's often difficult to discover.

Marks, notations and other marginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book's long journey from the
publisher to a library and finally to you.

Usage guidelines

Google is proud to partner with libraries to digitize public domain materials and make them widely accessible. Public domain books belong to the
public and we are merely their custodians. Nevertheless, this work is expensive, so in order to keep providing this resource, we have taken steps to
prevent abuse by commercial parties, including placing technical restrictions on automated querying.

We also ask that you:

+ Make non-commercial use of the files We designed Google Book Search for use by individuals, and we request that you use these files for
personal, non-commercial purposes.

+ Refrain from automated querying Do not send automated queries of any sort to Google's system: If you are conducting research on machine
translation, optical character recognition or other areas where access to a large amount of text is helpful, please contact us. We encourage the
use of public domain materials for these purposes and may be able to help.

+ Maintain attribution The Google "watermark" you see on each file is essential for informing people about this project and helping them find
additional materials through Google Book Search. Please do not remove it.

+ Keep it legal Whatever your use, remember that you are responsible for ensuring that what you are doing is legal. Do not assume that just
because we believe a book is in the public domain for users in the United States, that the work is also in the public domain for users in other
countries. Whether a book is still in copyright varies from country to country, and we can't offer guidance on whether any specific use of
any specific book is allowed. Please do not assume that a book's appearance in Google Book Search means it can be used in any manner
anywhere in the world. Copyright infringement liability can be quite severe.

About Google Book Search

Google's mission is to organize the world's information and to make it universally accessible and useful. Google Book Search helps readers
discover the world's books while helping authors and publishers reach new audiences. You can search through the full text of this book on the web

NOTE.

This atlas has been prepared in the hope that it may be of service to students
in schools and colleges in helping to make clear the relation that existed between
the geography and the history of the ancient world.

Geography is of little value except in its relation to the lives of men, and the
movements of history, that is, the account of the migrations and civilization of
peoples, cannot be clearly understood apart from the geographical conditions that
have largely determined them.

Physical, political and historical geography should, as far as possible, go hand in
hand. The lines of the coasts, the courses of the rivers and the barriers of mountains
should be considered in studying the history of a country, both in its internal and its
foreign relations. Such features of a country are constant, and may be portrayed on
a single map, but political geography is constantly varying, and no one map of a
country can show the successive changes of centuries in its towns, its cities, and the
movements of its peoples. It runs closely parallel with history, and requires for its
proper understanding a variety of presentation showing a country under different
conditions. The progress of history, too, the essential thing in the life of the ancient
world, can be clearly seen, in graphical form, only by an exhibit in different maps
of the effect of popular movements.

The student of ancient history or literature can have but an imperfect conception
of much that he studies if he does not know the situation and political relations of
the places that are brought to his attention. It is, therefore, of vital importance to
him that he be familiar with the political and historical geography of the times
of which he is studying. To give him the means of such familiarity is the object of
this atlas.

The general changes in the political geography and history of the ancient world
are exhibited in these maps. A map of the peoples of the ancient world is followed
by others showing the rise of the Persian kingdom, the conquests of Alexander and
the governments of his successors. A number of maps shows the changes in the
political divisions, peoples, and governments that followed in Asia Minor, Greece and
the lands about ^gean. Another series presents the similar changes that marked
the history of Italy, and also the relations of Rome and Carthage. The conquest of
Gaul, Spain and Germany, as well as the movements of peoples in central Europe,
are shown in other maps. The exhibit of the ancient world in its parts is completed
by maps of Egypt and Palestine, while the final map presents the growth of the
Roman Empire.
