103rd-YEAR FOUNDERS' DAY CONVOCATION

The North Carolina Agricultural
and Technical State University
has occupied a unique role in ef-
forts to provide higher educa-
tion for citizens of the state
since 1891. The college operated
as an annex to Shaw University
in Raleigh until it moved to
Greensboro in 1893 after that
city donated $1 1 ,000 in cash and
14 acres of land for a campus.
A&T today is the largest histori-
cally black university in the state
and the sixth largest in the na-
tion.

1994 Miss Collegiate
African-American
Miss Jackson State University
MALETHA L. DIXON
Maletha L. Dixon, the 1994 Miss
Collegiate African-American
Pageant (MCAAP) winner, rep-
resenting Jackson State Uni-
versity, Jackson MS, was
crowned queen on June 18,
1994. The crowning took place
during Pro-Line hair product's
Miss Collegiate African-
American Pageant, a two-hour
televised presentation, hosted
by celebrity stars Robert Guil-
laume and Ella Joyce. The pro-
gram was recorded at Walt
Disney MGM Studios, Orlando,
PL and aired nationally August
19th-September 25th.
Described as intelligent, beauti-
ful and independent, Ms.
Dixon, present queen and grad-
uate of Jackson State University,
is currently working as an ac-
countant in Kansas City, MO.
She plans to become a certified
public accountant after she takes
the exam in November.
While at Jackson State Uni-
versity, her academic achieve-
ments and college participation
were outstanding. She received
a full academic scholarship and
was a Charles F. Moore Scholar
which awarded her an addition-
al $1,000 per year stipend for
high academic honors. She was
on the National Dean's List, list-
ed in the Who's Who in
American Colleges and Uni-
versities, chair of the Student
Advisory Council, member of
Accounting Society and member
of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
"1 was driven by basic principles
of faith in God, belief in myself
and determination," said Ms.
Dixon. My message to people,
particularly the young, is for
them to grasp their own basic
principles and live by them. By
doing so, people can accomplish
anything without limitations,"
she added.
Born m lacl^son, MS, 21 years ago, Ms. Dixon attributes her overall success to God, her mother Brenda and
supportive family members.

North Carolina A&T State University students enjoy spending
time with their fellow Aggies. Student life is a highlighted aspect
of campus activity. With that kind of emphasis students are able
to appreciate different backgrounds.
The fun, loving, happy smiling faces of the students as thev take
part in the experience of being at NO PLACE LIKE HOME, is
what Aggieland is all about.
/hether it is a nice afternoon of sitting outside under a tree or enjoy-
ig a evening of good company, students are able to find it all at
.&T. Being able to relax and make themselves feel at HOME is what
&T students like to do.
a
Students also take time out to do
what they came to A&T to
achieve — an education. Smiling
faces are not a rare sight on the
campus of A&T. The entire stu-
dent bodv along with the faculty
are striving towards making
A&T ... NO PLACE LIKE

Education is officially compul-
sory for nine years between six
and 15 years of age. Algeria's
educational system has grown
remarkably since 1962, in the last
12 years, attendance has
doubled to more than 5 million
students. In 1991 there were 10
universities and a number of
'centres universities' and techni-

MISS BLACK U.S.A. 1994-1995
DEYA MARSHEA SMITH
i::;ii
Deya Marshea Smith, a native of New
Haven, Connecticut, won the coveted title
of Miss Black U.S.A. 1994.
Deya, a 22 year old senior at Howard Uni-
versity, will graduate in Spring '95 from tliE
School of Fine Arts . Deya is majoring in as
ing and hopes to own her own production
and film company.
Prior to winning the National title of "Miss
Black U.S.A.," Deya wooed the judges at
her state pageant in Connecticut in which
she proclaimed, "I am living proof that
through God, all things are possible."
Deya, who has chosen HIV/AIDS Educa-
tion as her platform, hopes that she will
make a difference.
Deya is actively involved in her church and
Students for Christ Crusade on her cam'
pus. In January, she toured South Africa,
courtesy of South African Airways, in
hopes that she may be able to deliver hope
to people of color through her own per-
sonal testimony.
Deya has been nahonally featured in ES-
TEEM MAGAZINE, UNIQUE HAIR and
BEAUTY, and will be featured this winter
in SOPHISTICATES BLACK HAIR,
BLACK HAIR TODAY, and BLACK
TRESS.
An aspiring actress and producer, Deya
also won the pageant's Performing Arts
Award.

DEDICATION
To men, all men,
Your passion s deep.
If only passions not put to sleep.
To women, my Sisters,
Who know not their power,
This is the time
Now is the hour.
Heal the wounds
Of a past out of control.
Today, the present, is ours to hold.
Oh mothers, daughters.
Sisters, wives and friends.
Let go the anger.
Let us celebrate our men.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first intercollegiate Greek letter fraternity established for Black college students, was organized at
Cornell University, Ithaca, New York in 1906. The first unit of this nahonal fraternity, organized by college men of Afro-American
descent, was called Alpha Chapter. The seven visionary founders at Cornell, Henry Authur Cailis, Charles Chapman, Eugene K. Jones,
George Kelly, Nathaniel Murray, Robert Ogle and Vertner Tandy, labored in the year of severe economic struggle and racial conflict in
the United States.
Beta Epsilon Chapter, the local satellite of Alpha, continues to keep ALPHA PHI ALPHA FIRST OF ALL BLACK GREEKS.
