5"

The North Carolina Agricultural
and Technical State University
has occupied a unique role in ef-
forts to provide higher educa-
tion for citizens of the state
since 1891. The college operated
as an annex to Shaw University
in Raleigh until it moved to
Greensboro in 1893 after that
city donated $1 1 ,000 in cash and
14 acres of land for a campus.
A&T today is the largest histori-
cally black university in the state
and the sixth largest in the na-
tion.

1994 Miss Collegiate

African-American

Miss Jackson State University

MALETHA L. DIXON

Maletha L. Dixon, the 1994 Miss
Collegiate African-American
Pageant (MCAAP) winner, rep-
resenting Jackson State Uni-
versity, Jackson MS, was
crowned queen on June 18,
1994. The crowning took place
during Pro-Line hair product's
Miss Collegiate African-
American Pageant, a two-hour
televised presentation, hosted
by celebrity stars Robert Guil-
laume and Ella Joyce. The pro-
gram was recorded at Walt
Disney MGM Studios, Orlando,
PL and aired nationally August
19th-September 25th.

Described as intelligent, beauti-
ful and independent, Ms.
Dixon, present queen and grad-
uate of Jackson State University,
is currently working as an ac-
countant in Kansas City, MO.
She plans to become a certified
public  accountant  after  she  takes
the exam in November.

While at Jackson State Uni-
versity, her academic achieve-
ments and college participation
were outstanding. She received
a full academic scholarship and
was a Charles F. Moore Scholar
which awarded her an addition-
al $1,000 per year stipend for
high academic honors. She was
on the National Dean's List, list-
ed in the Who's Who in
American Colleges and Uni-
versities, chair of the Student
Advisory Council, member of
Accounting Society and member
of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

"1 was driven by basic principles
of faith in God, belief in myself
and determination," said Ms.
Dixon. My message to people,
particularly the young, is for
them to grasp their own basic
principles and live by them. By
doing so, people can accomplish
anything without limitations,"
she added.

Born m lacl^son, MS, 21 years ago, Ms. Dixon attributes her overall success to God, her mother Brenda and
supportive family members.

North Carolina A&T State University students enjoy spending
time with their fellow Aggies. Student life is a highlighted aspect
of campus activity. With that kind of emphasis students are able
to appreciate different backgrounds.

The fun, loving, happy smiling faces of the students as thev take
part in the experience of being at NO PLACE LIKE HOME, is
what Aggieland is all about.

/hether it is a nice afternoon of sitting outside under a tree or enjoy-
ig a evening of good company, students are able to find it all at
.&T. Being able to relax and make themselves feel at HOME is what
&T students like to do.

a

Students also take time out to do
what they came to A&T to
achieve — an education. Smiling
faces are not a rare sight on the
campus of A&T. The entire stu-
dent bodv along with the faculty
are striving towards making
A&T ... NO PLACE LIKE
HOME.

WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL

Nelson Mandela was elected to govern the violent
country of South Afnca. The 76-year-old leader won in
the country's first all-race election that ended white
minority rule and made Mandela the first black South
African leader.

\

President Jean-Bertrand Anshde was elected pres-
ident in late 1990 of the island of Haih. Less than a year
later he was arrested by the military and expelled from
the country.

The Rwandan civil war between the Huitus and the Tutsi minority. A peace accord
was signed in 1993. But more than a million refugees were forced to flee to Zaire and
other neighboring cciuntnes a year later.

President Clinton signed a $30 billion crime bill. The huge law bans the manufactun
sale and possession of 19 specific types of assault-style weapons.

To men, all men,

Your passion s deep.

If only passions not put to sleep.

To women, my Sisters,

Who know not their power,

This is the time

Now is the hour.

Heal the wounds

Of a past out of control.

Today, the present, is ours to hold.

Oh mothers, daughters.

Sisters, wives and friends.

Let go the anger.
