GENERATION   I. 

Edward  Bonn,  an  immigrant  from  Wales.  He  settled  in 
Taunton  in  1643  or  thereabouts.  He  married,  Sept.  7,  1654,  Sarah 
Tarne,  daughter  of  Miles  Tame  of  Boston.  They  settled  in  that 
part  of  Taunton  called  Berkley.  Edward  was  killed  by  the  Indians 
in  1676.  In  relation  to  his  death  the  following  tradition  is  told: 
"  Hearing  that  the  savages  might  burn  his  home  and  kill  his  family, 
he  moved  them  to  Taunton,  a  village  about  seven  miles  distant, 
where  they  remained  for  some  time.  One  day,  taking  his  dog  with 
him,  he  went  to  his  home  to  get  some  article,  a  cheese  hoop  the 
story  says,  and  had  started  to  return  when  he  became  aware  that 
some  Indians  were  following  him.  He  climbed  a  tree  whose 
branches  completely  hid  him  and  the  Indians  passed  without  seeing 
him,  but  his  dog  began  to  bark  and  the  Indians  came  back,  found 
him  and  shot  him  in  the  tree."  Edward  was  one  of  the  original  pur- 
chasers of  the  part  of  Taunton  which  became  Norton  and  all  the 
Babbitts  are  supposed  to  be  his  descendants.  He  left  nine  children 
of  whom  the  youngest  was  Deliverance,  born  Dec.  15,  1673.  The 
oldest  child  was  ; 

GENERATION  IE 

Edward,  born  July  15,  1655,  died  in  1727.  He  married,  first, 
Abigail  Tisdale,  daughter  of  John  and  Sarah  Walker  Tisdale  of 
Taunton,  Feb.  1,  16S3.  This  John  Tisdale  was  killed  by  the  In- 
dians at  Taunton  in  1676,  the  same  year  as  Edward  Bobit.  He 
married,  second.  Dec.  22,  1698,  Elizabeth  Thayer,  daughter  of 
Nathaniel    and  Abigail    Harvey  Thayer  of   Taunton.      His    will    is 


dated  Feb.  5,  1727.  In  this  he  named  his  wife  Elizabeth  and 
eleven  children,,  six  sons  and  five  daughters.  One  of  these  sons 
was : 

GENERATION  III. 

Nathax,  son  of  Edward  and  Abigail  Tisdale  EobiL  born  1693, 
died  Feb.  25,  1759.  He  moved  to  Norton.  His  wife  was  Mary 
Snell  or  Sneftem  who  was  born  in  1703,  and  died  Die.  16,  17S3. 
They  had  eight  children  whose  births  are  all  recorded  at  Norton. 
On  these  records  after  these  births  is  this  :  "  Sarah  Snalum,  died  in 
Norton  Nov.  13,  1746."  This  may  have  been  Mary's  mother. 
Their  fourth  son  was  : 

GENERATION   IV. • 

Nathan,  born  Oct.  8,  1730,  died  Aug.  31,  1794.  He  married 
Abigail  Cobb.  Their  bans  were  published  Feb.  1,  1737.  She  was  the 
daughter  of  Benjamin  and  Mary  Mason  Cobb  of  Norton.  She  was 
born  at  Norton  Mar.  5,  1731,  and  died  there  May  10,  17S2.  He 
married  for  a  second  wife  Mrs.  Judith  Newcomb,  mother  of  Annis 
Newcomb.  Nathan  was  a  Lieutenant  in  the  Revolution.  His 
children  by  his  first  wife  were  : 

GENERATION   V. 

1.  Nathan,  born  Mar.  6.  1755,  died  April.  1826.  He  mar- 
ried, June  24,  1779,  Anna  Newcomb,  sister  of  Annis  Newcomb. 
In  17S9  he  moved  to  Westmoreland,  N.  H.  He  was  a  doctor,  and 
was  a  surgeon  in  the  Revolution.  He  had  six  children,  three  sons 
and  three  daughters.  One  son  was  Nathaniel  Godfrey  Babbitt,  who 
in  1S5S  moved  to  Beloit,  Wis.,  where  he  lived  with  his  son  Clinton 
Babbitt  until  his  death  Mar.  n,  1867. 

2.  Levi,  born  Aug.  31,  1757,  died  at  Norton  May  S,  1795. 
He  married  Betty  Babbitt,  daughter  01  Seth  Babbitt  of  Easton.  She 
died  April  9,  1  Soo.     They  had  six  children. 

3.  Abigail,  born  Mar.  31,1764.  Married  Annis  Newcomb 
and  had  two  daughters,  Abigail,  who  married  Edward  Babbitt  and 
Mary  who  married  Alvin  Dunham  as  his  second  wife.   - 

4.  Edward,  mentioned  only  in  his  father's  will. 

5.  Sarah,  married  Benj.  Wild,  son  of  Dr.  John  and  Anna 
(Hodges)  Wild  of  Norton. 

6.  Mary,  married  a  Lincoln. 


7-  Sxellem,  born  Dec.  n,  1760,  died  April  1854.  He  mar- 
ried Dec.  12,  17S2,  at  Stroughtonhara,  now  Sharon,  Mass.,  Betty 
Blanchard.  They  were  married  by  Rev.  Mr.  Curtis.  They  moved 
to  Savoy  in  17S7.  Sneilem  held  at  some  time  every  town  office  in 
Savoy  and  was  al^o  state  representative.  He  served  in  the  Revolu- 
tion and  was  in  the  battle  of  Bunker  Hill  and  siege  of  Boston.  He 
had  seven  children. 

GENERATION  VI. 

1.  Snell,  born  Sept.  9,  1783,  died  Mar.  9.  1S53. 

2.  Ebexezer,  born  Nov.  n,  17S4,  who  died  in  his  youth. 

3.  Abigail  Goff.  She  had  seven  children,  among  whom  are 
Elizabeth  Walton  of  North  Adams  and  Mary  Ingraham  of  Adams. 

4.  Betsey,  married  Alvin  Dunham  and  had  two  children, 
Mary  Baker  and  Franklin. 

5.  Edward,  married  Abigail  Newcomb.  Had  five  children, 
William,  Andrew,  Charles,  Nathan  and  Sarah  Reed. 

6.  Polly. 

7.  Seth. 

Snell  married  in  t  S09  Jael  Edson.  He  was  a  famous  physician 
in  Adams  for  many  years,  was  also  state  representative.  His  wife 
died  in  1S66.     They  had  ten  children. 

GENERATION  VII. 


1.  Nathan",  died  1SS9.     Had  no  children. 

2.  Erasmus,  still  living  in   Bloomington.  111.      Has  three  sons. 
Corvdox,  dead.      Leaves  two  daughters  Alice  and  Cylinda. 
John  Qui xcy,  dead.     Has  no  children  living. 
Hoil\ce,  still  living  in  Philmont,  N.  V.     Has  a  son,  Horace. 
Henry,  died  in  his  youth. 
Byrox,  died  in  his  youth. 
Binwhii.  dead.      Has  no  children  living. 
M.  Antoinette  Taylor,   who  lives   in    Adams.     She  has 

two  sons,  Edward  and  Emory  and  a  daughter,  Leila. 

10.     Ami. ink   L.  Browne,  died    1888.     Left  two  sons  Charles 
and  Isaac.
