Thomas Battelle, whose descendants comprise, as it is
supposed, all o7~the name of Battelle, with various spell-
ings, in the Northern and Western sections of the United
States, was of Dedham, Norfolk county, Massachusetts.
The family of Battle, in Noftli Carolina, to which Judge
William H. Battle belongs, is, possibly, descended from
Thomas Battelle; but this is uncertain. The tradition in
the North Ciirolina family is, that its ancestor came directly
from England to Virginia. Family tradition can not, how-
ever, be relied on, and this family may be descended from
Thomas Battelle, perhaps, through Jonathan, a son of
Thomas, a branch of the family not very full}' traced.
The descendants of Thomas Battelle, in the male line,
seem to be much less numerous than' those of most other
progenitors who immigrated to this countrj^ at as early a
period, and whose genealogies have been published. In
what year, and from what part of England Thomas Bat-
telle came over to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, is not
ascertained. The name of Battelle was recorded as a fam-
ily name in England as early as the twelfth century. It
would seem to have been of Norman origin. It had two
coats of arms.
Thomas Battelle, in his numerous signatures, which re-
main in the public records of Dedham, always spells his
name as here written. The name was probably pronounced
by him Baitaly, as his pastor records his name with that
spelling in every instance, and it is also thus spelled in other
records.
The first record in which the name of Thomas Battelle
appears in Dedhara, is that of his marriage, recorded thus :
•' Thomas Battaly and Mary Fisher was married the 5 of
(5)
G
7 mo., 1648." In the same year, November 4th, there was
a grant to him by Henry J>rooke, one of the original pro-
prietors of the town, of four acres of land, adjoining the
house lot of Rev. John Allen, the pastor. This lot of four
acres was not his house lot, which was another lot else-
where described in the records, so as to identify it with the
house lot of his descendant, Ebbnezer Battelle, a hundred
years later. A portion of the grants of land to him were
clearly the same which have remained in the family in the
Western part of the original township, formerly called the
Springfield precinct, which is now the town of Dover. By
the indications of the record, Thomas Battelle enjoyed his
share of the aj-pointments of the town — that of Selectman
in 1677 and four other years, and of Town Clerk from 1687
for years. The latter preserves to us the personal
memorial of a distinct and practical handw^riting. His
property, as indicated by the assessment for taxes, seems to
have been above the average of that of his townsmen ; his
average was above the eleventh in a list of one hundred or
more. As his sons came forward, and age settled upon
him, a division of his property is maiiifest. In 1691, the
year of his wife's death, his assessment is nearly a third
less than that of his son John. In 1698, his assessment, on
a small rate, is at £1 6s., John's at £4 3s., Jonathan's, £3 4s.
In 1705, only the names of the two sons appear. This
looks naturally to the close of life, with the end of its cares
and responsibilities. The final record follows two years
later: "Thomas Battelle, the aged, deceased February
8, 1706."
Mary Fisher, the wife of Thomas Battelle, was the
daughter of Joshua Fisher, who was the son of " Fisher of
Syleharn" (England). Joshua Fisher, and his family, Avith
his brother Antony and family, went to America.^ Joshua
Fisher settled first at Dedham, but afterward removed to
Mcdfield. He made Thomas Battellk executor of his will.
By the church record, " Mary, the wife of Thomas Battaly,
* Chandler Manuscript, Brilisli Museum, quoted in tlie Genealogical
Register.
was admitted to the church, 2 of 11 mo., 1648." Thomas
Battelle was admitted five years later.
