Shaw University
Raleigh, North Carolina

Foreword

The pages herein attempt to capture black consciousness as it exists on the Shaw University
campus. '

To understand what appears to be a new mood among black college students it is necessary
to reflect upon a famous quote from The Souls of Black Folk. There W. E. B. DuBois has written-
"One ever feels his twoness. -an American Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unrec-
onciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it
from being torn asunder.

"The history of the American Negro is the history of strife,-this longing to obtain self-
conscious manhood, to merge in his double self into a better and truer self."

The American black man has always attempted to achieve this manhood by emphasizing
one phase of his twoness. In the early I960's, the emphasis was on his Americanism At the
present time, particularly among black college students, the emphasis is, to borrow a term
from Senghor, on Negritude.

The new mood has come under many names: black pride, black acceptance, black awareness
eu\ We describe it under the name, "black consciousness."

This mood has touched black college students throughout America. Here at Shaw, the
awareness of blackness has manifested itself in many ways. One of the most effective emphasis
on self-acceptance, self-awareness and self-knowledge has come through our Drama Depart-
ment, under the direction of Mr. Chestyn Everett. Such productions as "Take a Giant Step "
and "A Raisin in the Sun," were produced by the Shaw Players. This group has also presented
several programs on the theme of Blackness.

The annual Homecoming Parade stressed the beauty of blackness. Black robes, dresses and
other black attire stood out on this occasion.

Many of the young men on our campus show this black consciousness by wearing their
hair in the style called "Afro." And several of the young ladies have let their hair grow in its
natural way.

The mood has also been expressed in .several other movements and ways: pride of heritage
a concern about adding black courses to the curriculum, of participation in programs designed
to elevate the black community, and of supporting the cause of black folk around the world.

This new mood, as indicated earlier, operates on a different rationale than the student move-
ment of 1960-1963. During that period, the emphasis was on integration, being accepted into the
mainstream.

Students discovered that integration meant absorption, loss of identity, and nothingness
Now they are saying, "We are coming back conscious of our blackness, proud of it, emphasizing
what we have done, what we are doing, and what we will do. We are no longer ashamed nor do
we believe that white is automatically right!! Black is beautiful. We are discovering our
heritage and we will build on it."

To be a leader! What is that to be?

To stand between a people and their foes

And earn suspicion for a recompense;

To care for men more than they care themselves;

To keep a clear, discnmmating mind

Between the better counsel and the best;

To be a judge of men, that none may rank

In estimation higher than his worth;

Nor fail ofscope to prove his quahty;

To search the motive that explains the act

Before it is accounted good or bad;

To trust a man. and yet not be dismayed

To find him faithless, going on again

To trust another; to build failure up

Into the tedious structure of success;

To meet the subtle enemy within

As well as him without, and vanquish both;

To see the cause betrayed by those who pledge

The strictest loyalty; to over match

The envious with magnanimity; . , .

HISTORICAL STATEMENT

Shaw University's School of Rehgion is rooted in the
history of the institution, which was founded on Decem-
ber 1, 1865, when a theological class was formed in the
old Guion Hotel, situated where the State Museum now
stands. Dr. Henry Martin Tupper formed the class after
being honorably discharged from the Union Army after
three years as a Private and as a Chaplain.

Shortly after the formation of the theological class. Dr.
Tupper saw the need for expanding his activities. With
$500, which he had saved while in Army, he purchased a
lot at the corner of Blout and Cabarrus Streets and there
erected a two-story structure. With the help of a faithful
few followers, he built this edifice with timber prepared
from trees that they themselves felled in the forests. The
Raleigh Institute, as it was called, was one of the largest
structures of its kind in the city.

In 1870, the present site of Shaw was purchased. It
was then called the General Barringer Estate. The name
Shaw Collegiate Institute followed in 1871 and remained
until 1875 when the school was chartered and incorporat-
ed under the name of The Shaw University. Its funda-
mental objective was stated in its motto: "Pro Christo
Humanitate""— For Christ and Humanity.

The first Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.) degrees were
awarded to four students in 1900.

Thirty-three years later, April 15, 1933, the School of
Religion was established by act of the Board of Trustees
of The Shaw University, enlarging the work of the Theo-
logical Department. The School offered the Bachelor of
Divinity degree on a six-year course of study, combining
two additional years of study with the four-year B.A.
and B.S. programs.

... We demand something more. We demand that our leaders honestly respect the Negro, as a
race, in the masses; and that they have the courage and unselfishness to work for the best interest of
those masses. We must have doctors, lawyers, and preachers who will not exploit the poor and
ignorant. We must have leaders who understand and value the soul of the Negro as he is now, m the
South,— leaders who are therefore qualified to refashion and direct these masses in a new age

The educated Negro is an absolute fact. The day is past when his ability to learn is scoffed at. But
on the other hand is born that fear that he may go too far— excel or equal the Anglo- Saxon. —and that
fear is a prime motive in the minds of many who seek to hedge the onward path of the race. But this
path will not be hedged. This educated class, though few in number, has been keeping for years the
torch aloft for the race.

This idea of service to the race is peculiarly the mission of the educated Negro. In no other way
can higher education be justified for the race; and Dr. Mayo has well denominated the field before
him as a "high plateau of opportunity." It is part of his mission to take up leadership of the race. The
day for ignorant Negro leaders is rapidly passing. One of the first services to be rendered along this
line IS to insist that seeming shall no longer be allowed to pass for being. No matter where it strikes
or who it strikes, he must help strip away pretense from the vain and shallow, unveil those who
masquerade under borrowed, empty, high sounding titles— those whose vociferous tones, glib tongues,
and unlimited audacity seek to pose their owners as learned ones under the thinnest veneer.

The day has come when the brain of the race must both direct its brawn and expose its bass.
Ignorance and charlatanism will seek enlightenment or retreat only when intelligence and learning
make a masterly array for leadership.

— William S. Scarborough
excerpt for "The Educated Negro
and his Mission", 1903.

In evaluating our leaders, we shall not quibble as to their relative merits or fame; we shall ask only
that they work constantly to qualify themselves m their chosen fields, and that they find m the needs
and faith of a whole people a greater thing than their own ambitions. They can gain inspiration and
unselfish purpose in no way so surely as through a proper understanding of our past. That past is mute,
but chastening. There is a great suffering, two hundred and fifty years of our people's life and beauty
crushed frustrated, — no recompense to them, forever.

— Allison Davis

TO THE GRADUATES OF 1968:

As you leave Shaw University and begin a new chapter in your life's experience, I extend heartiest
congratulations upon this achievement and sincere best wishes for all your future endeavors.

You are completing your college education during one of the most exciting and challenging
periods in the history of our country, and you are faced with the task of helping to determine its
destiny-

The single most important virtue which you can contribute to this additional chapter of man's
sojourn on earth is the virtue of idealism: a tough-minded refusal to accept things as they are and a
determined resolve to make them what they ought to be.

The manner in which you meet and master the challenges that confront you as a citizen will re-
flect credit, not only upon you as an individual, but also upon your alma mater, and will, to some
extent, measure the effectiveness of the program here.

With your parents, we share the ecstacy of these moments, and with faith in your ahililv and hope
for your future, we send you forth to join the ranks of many outstanding alumni.

James H. Cheek.
President

Your world is as big as you make it.
I know, for I used to abide
In the narrowest in a corner.
My wings pressing close to my side.

But I sighted the distant horizon
Where the sky line encircled the sea
And I throbbed with a burning desire
To travel this immensity.

I battered the cordons around me
And cradled my wings on the breeze
Then soared to the uttermost reaches
With rapture, with power, with ease!

I know how the caged bird feels, alas!
When the sun is bright on the upland slopes;
When the wind stirs soft through the springing grass
And the river flows like a stream of glass
When the first bird sings and the first bud opens
And the faint perfume from its chalice steals —
I know what the caged bird feels!

HEAD COACH
IRA MITCHELL

Head Basketball Coach Ira Mitchell spent his early childhood on
the sandlots and basketball courts of the City of New York.

Determined at an early age to pursue his dream of success in
sports. Coach Mitchell, now 24, excelled in both basketball and base-
ball.

What Mitchell remembers most about his childhood is that at the
age of eleven, on September 5, 1954, he was awarded a baseball bat
and glove by the immortal Jackie Robinson, who presented these to
Coach Mitchell in person and to one other member of Ira's Little
League baseball team.

The coach played at Charles Evans Hughes High School in New
York City. When he entered Shaw University, Mitchell pursued a
vigorous course in physical education, still pursuing the sports he
loved best, basketball and baseball. He distinguished himself in the
former sport by becoming one of the greatest all-time point-makers
for the Shaw University cagers, and was elected to the All-CIAA
basketball team in 1965.

A member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Coach Mitchell
completed the requirements for graduation from Shaw in March of
1966 (3 1/2 years), and returned to his Alma Mater in June of that
year to be graduated with his class.

Upon leaving the familiar grounds of Shaw University, the Coach
returned to even more familiar environs, the sand lots and Com-
munity Center of New York City, where, from March of 1966 to
August of 1967, he taught in Westchester County of New York and
dedicated his energy and free time to the problems of the youths
whom he knew so well.

He coached the Drew-Hamilton Community Center basketball and
baseball teams. In his capacity as Assistant Director of the Center,
he counseled approximately sixty teenage youths per week.

When informed that he had been appointed Head Basketball Coach
at Shaw University, Mitchell immediately began extensive recruit-
ing and was instrumental in bringing some twenty students to the
Universitty, many of whom are not basketball players.

Mitchell has done graduate work at Hunter College, New York
City. He IS married to the former Miss Patricia Maione, also a gradu-
ate of the University.

Deuce?

The
1967-68 Bears'
team is the
youngest in the
CIAA. The team is com-
posed of only one senior &
one junior, then there's three
sophomores and 10 freshmen. Coach
Ira Mitchell has worked many long hours
to gel his team jelled and using its full pO'
tent

We don't expect these inexperienced players lo set
the conference on fire immediately. Shaw is building and
will become a power.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
JAMES E.LYTLE

A member of the faculty and staff at Shaw University for thirty-three years,
Athletic Director James E, Lytle guides, with a smooth hand, the physical
education affairs at the University. A 1925 graduate of Shaw. Director Lytle
has built up a strong system of Intercollegiate Athletics at Shaw in all the ma-
jor college sports. He has had a colorful career, especially in the field of base-
ball coaching, when he produced two successive Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association championship teams in the early sixties. He has also led his Bear
bascballers to other CTAA championships.

Coach Lytle received his master's degree in Physical Education at Columbia
University. New York, in 1933.

While studying at Shaw, from 1921 to 1925. he won a place alongside this
institution's all-time athletes, playing football, baseball and basketball, excelling
in each.

In 1922. Director Lytle made the All-American team, and in 1923. he won
the title of All-Southern Basketball Player. After graduating from this institu-
tion. Mr. Lytle taught and coached at Christian College, Franklinton, N.C.;
Morris Brown College. Atlanta, Ga.: Arkansas State College, Pine Bluff, Ark.;
and Shaw before going on to Columbia for a master's.

Director Lytle has also starred in semi-professional baseball and is well
known to every coach in the CI AA and other institutions across the nation.

His depth in psychological analysis of human nature, ability to evaluate,
devotion and loyalty to his Alma Mater and to his work are some of the many
qualities possessed by James Ellis Lytle, that endear him to all who know him
and cause even his opponent coaches to feel as we do— justly proud— whenever
we see him.

The editor speaks

On behalf of the Bear staff, I extend our deepest thanks and appreciation to
those who contributed in some way to this 1968 publication. We are especially
grateful to Mr. Chestyn Everett, whose artistic brilliance added the uniqueness
which we aimed for; to Mr. James Williams, our photographer, with whom it has
been a pleasure to work; and to Mr. Charles R. Jones, our adviser, to whom we
shall forever be grateful for his guidance and his earnest efforts to make this 1968
Bear the best yet.

I wish you. Class of 1968, success and happiness in the new roles which you will
soon be undertaking as now upon the brink of life you stand, and it is my hope that
this book will serve as a constant reminder of those most cherished moments in
this landmark year of your lives.

To our parents we say, 'Thank you', for we shall always be aware of the fact
that without your help and guidance we might never have reached this point in our
lives. It is our sincere hope that you will find pride and happiness in our achieve-
ments now and in the future.

Sincerely,

Marion Bunch— Editor
