THE
NINETEEN-SIXTY NINE

BEAR

SHAW UNIVERSITY

Raleigh, North Carolina

Forward

The Multifaceted Black

In 1969 black people need to be more directed, educated, and emplo\ed In
the wave of a new administration in the United States government that promises
to be conservative, there is an urgent need for black awareness and determina-
tion.

Ever> possibilit) of stature should be pursued by the black populace. This is
the time that demands the full participation of all black peoples in the arts,
sciences, services, and professions. The time for black people to involve them-
selves in all these things is now; not singularh, but jointK'. Now is the time for
the Multifaceted Black.

Shaw Universit), long a believer in the progression of the black man, is
dedicated toward the education of men and uomen. In order that blacks can be
prepared for opportunities when they arrive. Here we hope to develop multi-
faceted blacks through an experience in a multifaceted curriculum and envir-
onment. The Shaw student is also a firm believer in the progression of the black
man. A pride of heritage and the black consciousness that characterizes black
colleges across the country is very prevalent at this university.

A challenge is now before us as a people and as an institution. Shaw has in
the past borne the load and it is as true today as it ever was that Shaw will
continue to accept the challenge. An eflfort to capture the spirit, the con-
sciousness, and the beaut\' of blackness is made on the following pages. At
Shaw we proudly accept the challenge and seek to give the world the Multi-
faceted Black.

The Dedication

Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.
Brother Medgar Evers
Brother Malcohn \

Reverand Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers, and Malcohn \ are the reminder to black
people that this is a confused world but that one must, nevertheless, choose his goals and pursue
them with vigilance; even unto death. The lives that they led, the things that they stood for,
and the achievements the\ made are inspiration to all mankind to work towards the elevation
of their brothers. This book is dedicated to these three black martyrs in remembrance, in love,
and in admiration.

I saw bickering, ntit between enemies, but be-
tween friends. The wrath of the \(iung bellowing to
the complacency of the old;

I saw disrespect, not from without, but from with-
in. The male rejecting his role in societ\, \ea even
his gracious counterpart of the sexes.

I saw denimciation, not from the affluent who
posses, but from the poor and ill repute. The im-
poverished turning their backs on themselves onl\ to
meet themselves;

i saw and I understood

I understood that on people had been stripped
of their identit\ .

I understood that the raging, crying, rebellious
child u as searching for his brother,

I understood that respect had been stolen and
imderstood the hesitancy in yielding w hat was left,

I understood the falseness and the farcity deepK
implanted beneath the apparition of grandeur.

I understood m\ Blackness

I tried to tell the story of the black man from his
r(Kits on the shores of the Euphrates, yea the roots of
the world,

I tried to feed the child with knowledge, wit
hope, w ith courage, and with pride.

I tried to respect every brother and make him
synonymously respectful; especially towards the
gracious ebony queens from which comes our guid-
ance.

i tried to accept each brother for his soul and
oneness of situation, not for his tacitous and im-
material material "hangups',

I tried to live the beauty, pride, and glory of Black-
ness as it should be lived, and I died that the Black

ght inherit the earth

A Message from Black Mart\ rs "
Kermit "K. C." Bu

The Editorial Statement

This has been a \ear of change for black students throughout the nation as
well as here at Shau L'niversit). It has been a \ear when demonstrations were
held, property damaged, threats and warnings issued, and students expelled.
It has also been a difficult academic > ear.

As I \ iew this year at Shaw I wonder whether all the students came to get an
education or whether the\ came to get just a degree, or to have an outstanding
social life. Even though all of these things are important in the pursuit of an
establishment, the most important of them for Black people is education To be
a "Multifacited Black requires that we be educated as e\tensi\el\ as is
humanh possible. We ha\e to get out of the "part\ bag" and get into the
"stud\ bag" in order to best be involved in the "black bag."

The time for Shaw students to awaken to responsibilit\ — for Shaw students
are different from all other students — is now Let's begin now to be examples to
other black students across the nation. We are the leaders, not the followers,
of tomorrow.

To m\ fellow seniors. I wish you the best of luck in whatever field you have
chosen; to all the other Shaw students, I wish for >ou to make sour class the
best to e\er graduate from Shaw L'nis ersity.

Theodore G. Booker
Editor of the 1969 Bear

President's Message

During this year throughout the nation at large, it has not been an easy year. The turbulence
that surrounds the American college campus and dislocation which have taken place within it
have not produced a sense of unity and communit\ between administration, faculty and stu-
dents but rather has further widened the gap creating the sense of panic, frustration, h>steria
and suspicion.

We, here at Shaw, have been extremeK sensitive to the crises of the .American college which
the activities of this year has dramatized. Our sensitivit\ has not been the sensitivity of fear
but rather one of concern

Shaw University was founded during the turbulent period of our nation's history. Eighteen
sixty-five was hardly an auspicious time for the Shaw idea. This idea envisioned the creation
of a true university in the southland whose services and benefits would be available to all with-
out regard to race, creed, color or previous condition of servitude. It succeeded in becoming a
true university, but it did not succeed in providing its benefits and services to all.

The culture in which it planted its seed was hostile towards the idea that all citizens of all
races would comprise the Shaw community. Because this was the idea, the culture was also
hostile towards the existence of an institution within its midst whose philosoph) exposed and
whose charter compelled the basic American principle.

The Shaw University: An Historical Review

Before the smoke from the guns of the Civil War had fully settled, a re-
cently discharged soldier from the Union Army was en route to Raleigh on
the first train that passed over the rails of the Seaboard after the cessation
of hostilities. On October 10, 1865, Henry Martin Tupper, native of Mon-
son, Massachusetts and graduate of Amherst College and Newton Theo-
logical Seminary, arrived in Raleigh.

On December 1, 1865, in a room in the old Guion Hotel (where the State
museum now stands) a few illiterate ex-slaves sat at the feet of Henry
Martin Tupper in a theological class. Out of this seed was formed the ad-

154

venture in higher education for the Negro which pioneered a new era in
American higher education. It was thus that Shaw University was born.

By mid-summer of 1866, the Raleigh Institute was formed and housed in
a frame structure above a church built with student and volunteer help and
enrolling seventy-five students for training as ministers and teachers. In
1870, the name was changed to The Shaw Collegiate Institute and the pres-
ent campus site was purchased. That same year, construction was begun
on the major building to be placed in the center of the new campus. This
building, Shaw Hall, was named for the benefactor, who had provided the
funds for the purchase of the new campus, and for whom the school was
named, Elijah J. Shaw of Wales, Massachusetts. Mobilizing students,
e.\-slaves and others, this impressive building was constructed entirely by
unskilled laborers who dug the clay, molded the brick by hand, felled the
timber and erected a structure which was vivid testimony of the newly
freedman's determination to win his way into the ways and woof of Ameri-
can life.

Contrary to. much prevailing pedagogical opinion of the time, Tupper
conceived of Shaw as an institution which would become a full fledged
University. By 1875, this vision was realized with the granting of a charter
by an act of the General Assembly designating the institution as The Shaw
University and stipulating that

... no pupil or pupils should ever be excluded from the benefits arising
therefrom ... on accounts of race, color, or previous- conditions of
servitude.

To fulfill the hope of an educational institution whose services would be
available to all, and which would contribute significantly to the rebuilding
of a nation divided by war and strife, the founder and first president set out
to establish a faculty of distinguished, dedicated men and women, and
programs of education which would become known for their integrity and
high quality.

156

In the short period of seventeen years, Shaw University had become es-
tabhshed as a vital force in the region and nation.

The Leonard Medical School was formed in 1882, and breaking with the
pattern of medical education then in vogue, opened as a medical school with
a four year course of study based upon a four year collegiate degree. With a
teaching hospital, the curriculum combined pre-clinical and clinical instruc-
tion into a pattern that subsequently became adopted by other medical
schools in the nation.

Before the end of the nineteenth century the University consisted of a school
of medicine, school of pharmacy, school of law, school of theology, college of
arts and sciences and a normal school.

To its campus came students from all over America and several foreign
countries, and its influence was being felt as its graduates returned to their
communities as physicians, pharmacists, lawyers, clergymen, and teachers.

Tupper, who had been the driving force behind the development of Shaw
from its incipiency, passed in 1893, and each of his successors has made his
own unique contribution to the perpetuation of his ideals, and each left an
indelible mark of his own educational philosophy, personality and character
upon the institution.

Throughout its history, Shaw has played a leading role in the education of
young men and women from the under-developed countries of Africa. More
than 10,000 students have studied in its classrooms, and it counts among its
alumni a large number of leaders throughout the nation.

Under authorization from the Board of Trustees, a distinguished group of
noted educators was formed in 1965 to form a Commission for the prepara-
tion of a Master Plan for the University's growth and development in the
decades ahead. Directed by the Institute for Educational Planning, Inc., of
New York, this Commission has set forth in clear precise terms the shape of
the Shaw of the future.

Once again breaking with prevailing tradition and folklore, Shaw initiated
in 1965 the "Shaw Plan of Education", designed principally to meet the
peculiar educational needs of the time, and began the work of rebuilding and
expanding its physical facilities to serve a larger student population.

As Shaw becomes more thoroughly involved in its second century of service
the Shaw Community looks back over its past with pride, and toward its
future with hope.

Qucen-Molher-Daushter of Africa

Sister of my Soul

Black pride of my Passion

My Eternal Love

I greet you my Queen, not in the obsequious whine of a cringing Slave to which you have
become accustomed, neither do I greet you in the new voice, the unctuous supplications of
the sleek Black Bourgeoisie nor the bullying bellow of the rude Free Slave — but in my own
voice do I greet you, the voice of the Black Man. And although I greet you anew, my greeting
is not new. but as old as the Sun. Moon, and Stars. And rather than mark a new beginning, my
greeting signifies only my Return

My Queen, it is hard for me to tell you what is in my heart for you today — what is in the
hearts of all my black brothers for you and all your black sisters — and I fear I will fail unless
you reach out to me. tunc in on me with the antenna of your love, the sacred love in
ultimate degree which you were unable to give me because I, being dead, was unworthy to
receive it; that perfect radical love of black on which our Fathers Thrived. Let me drink from
the river of your love at its source, let the lines of force of your love seize my soul by its core
and heal the wound of my Castration, let my convex exile end its haunted Odyssey in your
concave essence which receives that it may give. Flower of Africa, it is only through the
liberating power of your re-love that my manhood can be redeemed. For it is in your eyes,
before you, that my need is to be justified. Only, only, only you and only you can condemn
or set me free.

Be convinced Sable Sister, that the past is no forbidden vista upon which we dare not look,
out of a phantom fear of being, as the wife of Lot, turned into pillars of salt. Rather the past
is an omniscient mirror: We gaze and see reflected there ourselves and each other — what we
used to be, what we are today, how we got this way. and what we are becoming. To decline
to look into the Mirror of Then, my heart, is to refuse to view the Face of Now

Black Woman, without asking how, just say we survived our forced, march and travail
through the Valley of Slavery, Suffering, and Death — there that Valley there beneath us
hidden by that drifting mist. Ah, what sights and sounds and pain lie beneath that mist! And we
had thought that our hard climb out of that cruel valley let to some cool, green, and peaceful
place — but it"s all jungle here, a wild and savage wilderness that's overrun with ruins.

But put on your crown, my Queen, and we will build a New City on these ruins.

The Alma Mater of the
Shaw University

Hail dear old Shaw U., thy sons
revere thv name;
Long shall thy works be proud,
undimmed thy fame;
Time shall thy praises sing,
glory repay thy tears;
And loud thy praises ring through
all the years.

Noble thy hallways, noble thy
grassy plains;
Nobler the hearts of men, where
thou dost reign;
All we who love thy name, stout
hearts that shall not fail;
All rise and loud proclaim, Alma
Mater Hail!
