IT'S ABOUT US

It's been years that our people have been fighting for emancipation,

Sitting on the edge of their seats in anticipation,

Hoping and praying one day the man, the white man will set us free

From this endless cycle, we continue to see.

We blame the man for all the things that go wrong

From welfare to crack babies, even unemployment

Yup, that ones our favorite song.

He's the reason we've been oppressed, repressed, confused, distorted, and tangled

Stressed out, worn out, flipped out, tripped out and mangled.

We say because of him our people live in poverty,

That's why we feel our life is not a novelty.

But can we blame him for our black men standing on corners,

Lacking education, ending up in the morgue, being seen by a coroner?

Can we blame him for our young people dropping out of school?

Cause they see rap stars, smoking weed, singing songs about thongs making their lives look oh so cool?

We have lowered ourselves by taking a contract over a college degree,

Saying, "Yeah," this is how life was meant to be.

We're killing ourselves, winding up in jail,

Knowing good and well we can't afford the bail.

That's why cell block A, B, and D, are filled with

Mommy and Daddy should be's

So what is the answer to all this confusion?

Are we living a life filled with delusion?

Can't blame the white man for all our pain,

It will take knowledge and virtue in dignity we regain.

By Monica Cutner-Senior Class President

2008 Partnlrs tor Hxcllllncl

What a year this has been. I can not believe it has come to an end. Life is full of unwritten
chapters, continuous beginnings and uncharted adventures. We have worked hard to ensure that
new ideas are cultivated and implemented in a way that benefits the entire Junior class.

The overall goal of the Junior class was to bring unification within the student body by building
upon student leadership skills, community service, and educational pursuits.

I employ you to take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities that Shaw University has to
offer.

We must embrace the coming year with the same unbridled ambition, vision, and courage as we
continue to move forward.

The student voice at Shaw University resounds as loud as an ever-beating drum. We are listening,
and we are honored to be that voice.

Sincerely,

Tynesha K. Roberts

Class of 20 I

WE DID IT!!! I am still in amazement at how, together, we have completed our first year of
college, and boy what a year it was! It is only the beginning and yet an enormous
accomplishment. During the year, we have learned life lessons inside as well as outside of the
classroom; we have bonded with one another and established friendships that will last a
lifetime, but most importantly, we did it!

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for allowing me to act as the
Freshman Class President. All of us have been told we will never forget our freshmen
experience, and I must say, serving you was the most rewarding part for me. I am thankful
that God sent me to Shaw; not only did I start my college education, but was also blessed to
meet people who have made an impact on my life. I have had the opportunity to converse
one on one with many of you. We have grown together, laughed together, cried together,
and then turned around and missed a few classes together.

I would also like to thank my Freshmen Cabinet that worked hard to make sure that I was
on point. I have enjoyed working with you all and appreciate everything you have
contributed to this office as well as my personal life.

I look forward to completing our journey at Shaw University together. Once again, it is only
the beginning which means we need to prepare to make history here. There is so much
talent within the class of 20 1 and as long as we continue to support each other and do our
part, wexan Redefine the Standard'!
