Office of ttie President
To Mv Beloved Shaw Universitv Family:
"Strides to Excellence." We push ever onward, accepting only the best and working
to make our world a better place. This does not mean, however, that we should
refrain from taking a moment from time to time and enjoy memories of the past and
remember the good times. It is during those times we find the energy to go forward
and a deeper understanding of the bigger picture of our journey .
This yearbook is an ideal way to do just that. In its pages, we find pictures of familiar
faces, and images of good times shared with family and friends. We laugh, we
reminisce, and we find both energy and inspiration for our continuing journey.
So stop. Sit down. Take some time to flip through these pages and re-enjoy the good
times of the past year. Remember where you've been, and let that help guide you to
where you should be.
And m that moment of contemplation, join me in a prayer of thanks for the dedicated
students, staff, and faculty members that make this yearbook possible. You hold in
your hands their labor of lo\ e. and I want to congratulate them for their outstanding
work.
.lorn me in looking back on the year, then let's move forward with a renewed sense of
purpose and an even deeper understanding of what is meant when we say "Strides to
Excellence: Only the Best." It is a journey we can only take as a family. Thank you
for joining me on that path.

Thomas J. Boyd Chapel
dedicated in 1 948
The Boyd Chapel at Shaw University was first dedicated on June 15, 1948. After
WWII, the Unite|l States military had a surplus of wood framed "temporary" chapel
buildings. Shaw University applied for one of these chapels and one was so
designated. The chapel came from Camp Sutton, located in Monroe, Union County,
North Carolina. ^
In 1 993, The Boyd Chapel was completely renovated from funds donated by Rev.
Thomas J. Boyd for whom the chapel was subsequently named.

Blacfe people have evolved over the years. We have transformed ourselves into intellectuals.
and philanthropist, and continue to strive in our endeavors. This is an amazing feat, when
you put into consideration where we have come from. We have come from the great lands
of Africa, to the slave boats of our European counterparts. We have plowed their fields, and
were susceptible to their cruel and harsh ways. To come to where we are is truly amazing,
but it is not our zenith. We are still climbing the mountain towards, equality, and continue
to display to the world that we are perseveres. In this yearbook we hope that we have given
you a glimpse of our historical past in correlation with our prosperous future. We hope that
you have enjoyed it!!

Success
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the
affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure
the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy
child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you
have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

The Stained Glass Pattern
connotes the interrelation
and inter-dependence of
religion and learning
proclaimed in the School
Motto: PRO CHRISTO
ET HUMANITATE.
The Torch carries with it
the idea of light that
shows the pathway to
truth
The Olive Branch
emphasizes victory and
pursuit of excellence
The Dove, a Christian symbol,
portrays the Institution's
commitment to a religious
heritage.
The Human Figures represent all who have ^
come to and gone, imbued with spirit so
clearly enunciated in the life of the founder of
Shaw University, Dr. Henry Martin Tupper ,
"He counted not his life dear unto himself
that he might lift God ward his brother."
Impressions by Larry Williams class

Alma Mater
(Loyalty Song) .
Hail Dear Old Shaw a
Thy sons revere thy name.
Long shall thy works be proud
Undimmed thy fame
Time shall thy praises sing.
Glory repay thy tears.
And loud thy praises ring,
-| Thru all the years.
Noble thy hallways.
Noble thy grassy plains.
Nobler the hearts oi men.
Where thou dost reign
All we who love thy name.
Stout hearts thats shall not fail
All rise and loud proclaim.
Alma Mater, Hail!
