SOLDIERS AND SAILORS OF THE REVOLUTION

Printed records of the Revolutionary soldiers and
sailors are generally incomplete and unsatisfactory.
Only Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York have
compiled and published, by state authority, lists that are
at all thorough and properly arranged for ready refer-
ence. In other states attempts have been made to
bring together these records but for the most part with
the result only of collecting a mass of heterogeneous
material; muster rolls, payment rolls, pension applica-
tions, colonial and state assembly documents and so on,
without the collating and arranging of lists of individual
names and sometimes even, as in the case of the Penn-
sylvania Archives, without an index. In the eighth
annual report of the state library of Virginia, there is a
good and well arranged list of names with a , aluable
reference list of original sources. Many original papers
containing the names of these soldiers and sailors have
never been published, although still preserved in the
archives of the state to which they belong or in the
Government departments in Washington. We present
herewith the names of Bells who served in the army or
navy, as far as obtainable.
