Mr.  Harrison  (for  Mr.  King)  introduced  the  following  bill;  which  was  read 
twice  and  referred  to  the  Committee  on  the  Library. 


To  authorize  the  construction  of  the  Lincoln  and  Lee  Memorial 

Bridge  over  the  Potomac  River. 

1  Be  it  enacted  by  the  Senate  and  House  of  Represenia- 

2  tives  of  the  United  States  of  America  in  Congress  assembled, 

3  That  the  Secretary  of  War  is  hereby  authorized  and  directed 

4  to  have  constructed  a  bridge  from  a  point  on  the  Potomac 

5  River  west  or  northwest  of  the  Abraham  Lincoln  Memorial, 

6  affording  a  proper  approach  from  B  Street  Northwest,  to  a 

7  point  on  the  opposite  side  of  the  Potomac  River  east  of  the 

8  Sheridan  Gate  of  the  Arlington  National  Cemetery,  which

9  bridge  shall  be  known  as  the  Lincoln  and  Lee  Memorial 

10  Bridge.    There  shall  be  on  each  side  of  said  bridge  memorial 

11  pillars  and  on  the  inner  face  of  each  pillar  on  the  northern 

12  or  upper  side  of  said  bridge  there  shall  be  a  large  bronze 

13  profile  medallion  of  Abraham  Lincoln,  facing  westward,  and 

14  upon  the  inner  face  of  each  pillar  on  the  southern  or  lower 


1  side  of  said  bridge  there  shall  be  a  large  bronze  profile 

2  medallion  of  Robert  E.  Lee,  facing  eastward. 

3  Sec.  2.  That  the  cost  of  such  bridge  shall  not  exceed 

4  the  sum  of  $1,000,(100,  and  the  sum  of  $100,000,  or  so  much 

5  thereof  as  may  be  necessary,  is  hereby  appropriated,  out  of 

6  any  money  in  the  Treasury  not  otherwise  appropriated,  for 

7  the  purpose  of  securing  a  design  and  commencing  the  con- 

8  struction  of  said  bridge,  which  shall  be  used  exclusively  for 

9  foot  passengers  and  vehicles  and  prohibited  to  all  tramways, 

10  whether  propelled  by  steam,  electric,  cable,  horse,  or  other 

1 1  power.
