Introduction
This bibliography is a guide to
biographies in the arts. All books listed
are available on disc or cassette or in
braille in the collections of the National
Library Service for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped.
Biography has many facets: the
roundedness of works derived from
thorough research, the intimacy of per-
sonal reminiscences from family and
friends, the self -revelation of memoirs
and autobiography. Biographies of peo-
ple in the arts portray a variety of
gifted, creative personalities. Through
biography, artists, musicians, actors,
and authors are reborn in literary form
to delight, inspire, and humanize their
audience. Such accounts serve as a key
to the history of the arts and contribute
to making biography the largest nonfic-
tion genre.
Two classic biographies appear in this
bibliography: The Life of Samuel
Johnson (1791) by James Bos well,
which stands as the major model of
modern biography, and The Life of
Charlotte Bronte (1857) by novelist
Elizabeth Gaskell, which remains the
starting point in the study of the
Brontes. Also listed is G. K. Chester-
ton's Charles Dickens (1906), another
instance of an author deeply involved
in the life and works of another
author.
There are also reminiscences about
famous people written by members of
their families, as seen in Unwritten
Memories by Katia Mann, who recalls
her marriage lasting more than fifty
years with German author Thomas
Mann; Papa: A Personal Memoir by
Gregory Hemingway, the younger son
of the writer who brought terseness to
American prose; and Renoir, My
Father, by Jean Renoir, son of the im-
pressionist painter and himself a dis-
tinguished film director.
Memoirs include Happy Days, Heathen
Days, and Newspaper Days, H. L.
Mencken's literate portrayal of his
childhood, youth, and Baltimore and
the newspaper world in the early part
of this century. In a lighter vein, there
are At Random: The Reminiscences of
Bennett Cerfby the late publisher,
humorist, and punster; and Everything
but Money by Sam Levenson, humorist
and former educator.
Actors, artists, and authors share in-
sights and professional experiences in
My Autobiography by Charles Chaplin,
Grandma Moses: My Life's History,
and An Autobiography by Agatha
Christie. An unusual autobiographical
form is found in Live or Die by Anne
Sexton, a collection of agonizing poems
that won a Pulitzer Prize.
Biography The Arts is available in
large-print, disc, and braille formats.
The large-print edition contains more
than 250 titles on disc or cassette or in
braille, and lists bibliographies avail-
able on other subjects. The disc edition
lists only recorded materials, and the
braille edition lists only braille.
Each book in the bibliography is des-
cribed briefly. To locate books, use
either the table of contents, which has
six subject categories, or refer to the
index, which lists books by author and
title. Books under subject sections and
in the index are listed alphabetically by
media. If you are unable to find a
specific book, write or call your
cooperating library.
To order books, fill out the order form
at the back of the bibliography and
send it to your cooperating library.
Book numbers are listed numerically by
media.

About the Free
Reading Program
The National Library Service for the
Blind and Physically Handicapped
(NLS) loans books and magazines to
individuals who have problems reading
because of a visual or physical limita-
tion, temporary or permanent.
Books, playback equipment, head-
phones, and other aids are delivered by
mail. Book descriptions, catalogs, and
bibliographies such as this one are also
mailed regularly to inform readers of
new materials available.
No postage is required to borrow or
return books, equipment, and other
materials, and all materials are free.
Thousands of books on discs, cassettes,
and in braille are available through a
network of cooperating libraries. Fic-
tion and nonfiction selections include
classics, romances, science fiction,
biographies, bestsellers, gothic novels,
how-to books, and many more.
Popular magazines are converted into
discs, cassettes, and braille, and mailed
to subscribers directly from producers.
Music services are provided directly
from NLS.
Eligibility for the program is deter-
mined by the inability to see well
enough to read a conventional print
book or to hold a book and turn pages.
Individuals wishing service need a brief
statement describing their disability
from a competent authority such as a
medical doctor, nurse, optometrist,
ophthalmologist, staff member of a
health care institution, or a librarian.
For specific eligibility requirements and
more information, write to the
National Library Service for the Blind
and Physically Handicapped, Library
of Congress, Washington, D.C. 20542.
