Troubadours
118
A remarkably talented, versatile group of
young performers, they have ammassed a
wealth of experience in a few short years: six
international tours, including jaunts to Europe,
the Caribbean, Iceland, Newfoundland, and
Romania; countless appearances within their
home state (at Arts Festivals, Carnival Balls,
civic and church functions) as well as in Colo-
rado and Mexico; guest appearances with the
Memphis Symphony Orchestra and on televi-
sion; not to mention the annual Spring Con-
certs at Millsaps, and numerous other special
performances.
Throughout the years the TROUBADOURS
have continued to demonstrate their talent, ver-
satihty, and enthusiasm, thereby fulfilling a tra-
ditional concept of troubadours: taking their
talents to the people.

FOOTBALL
The Millsap Majors' 1973 record of five wins and four
losses tells only a small part of the successful season. Un-
der the direction of Head Coach Harper Davis and Assis-
tant Coach Tommy Ranager, the Majors rebuilt the de-
fensive unit and sustained a highly potent ground game.
The 1973 season will also be remembered as the year
that Millsaps football received long overdue recognition.
The September 10, 1973 issue of Sports Illustrated, in an
article on small college football, featured the Millsaps
Majors. Head Coach Davis was inducted into the Missis-
sippi State Sports Hall of Fame and Senior Linebacker
Mike Reans was named as a Kodak AU-American.
The Majors opened the 1973 season against Mars Hill
College of North Carolina. In a game noted for a well ex-
ecuted ground attack, but a poor defensive showing, the
visiting Majors lost 38-7. The Majors' lone touchdown
came in the fourth quarter when Quarterback Grisham
connected with Receiver Aldy for a 53 yard touchdown
pass.
The following week the Majors' offense proved its po-
tency as Millsaps defeated the host team. Southwestern,
24-14. Tailback Neeper scored twice with runs of one
yard and ten yards. QB Grisham capped a 66 yard drive
with a twelve yard run.
The Bisons of Harding College, ranked fifth by the Na-
tional Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, proved too
much for the Majors as Millsaps lost 28-7. The Majors'
touchdown came as a result of an eight yard pass from
Grisham to Aldy.
In their first home game, the Majors displayed a tal-
ented offense and a much improved defense as they
rolled over Sewanee, 16-7. The pass defense crippled the
visitor's attack, allowing only four completions out of 19
attempts for 60 yards. Comerback King intercepted a Se-
wanee pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown.
The fifth game of the season netted the Majors against
Austin College. The Majors did not disappoint the home-
coming CFOwd as they downed Austin 33-8. QB Grisham
provided the first touchdown with a four yard run. Aldy's
24 yard run gave the Majors its second TD. Fullback
Echols followed Aldy with a three yard touchdown run
and Fullback Axesmith scored on a nine yard run.
The Majors were scalped by the Indians of McMurry
as the hosts fell 7-6. Aldy returned a McMurry punt 79
yards for the TD. Unfortunately a Brindley PAT fell
short. A fourth quarter field goal attempt by Brindley
was marred by confusion of the field as the attempt was
blocked.
After the loss, the Majors pulled themselves together to
defeat Maryville of Tennessee, 7-6. The defensive gem of
the day came when the Une made a superb goal-line

stand, blocking four one-yard attempts by Maryville.
Guard Huoni, Tackles Harris and Herring, and Line-
backer Reans were credited with the game-saving
defense.
The Bulldogs of Texas Luthem proved too much for
the Majors, as Millsaps suffered its fourth and final de-
feat, 36-6. Millsaps closed its 1973 season against Prin-
cipia by defeating them.

Basketball
The Millsaps Majors 1973-74 basketball team,
coached by James Montgomery and assisted by Bob
Boothe, relied heavily on its seven returning seniors to
boost the Majors throughout seasonal play. Although
there was a size disparity between the Purple and White
and most of their opponents, the team exhibited quick-
ness and fine shooting to make up the difference.
The four returning starters, all seniors, included
guards Reggie Jones, Vinny Lynch, Mark Sorgenfrei,
and rebounder Scott Vamado. The other seniors who
backed up the Majors were guards Al Watts and Kent
Vanskiver, and forward Scotty Greene.
Junior college transfers John Tedder and Paul
Schlichtman alternated positions under the boards,
while junior guard Mike Flautt and sophomore forward
Mark Lynch filled in for Millsaps. A mid-season losing
streak prevented the Majors from enjoying a winning
season and the team ended the year with a 12-14 record.
The big upset of the season came when Millsaps
knocked off arch-rival Mississippi College, 77-72, in
their best overall performance of the season. The heav-
ily favored Choctaws fell victim to the Majors as the last
regularly scheduled game in Buie Gym was witnessed
before a jam-packed, howling crowd.

Millsaps Players
1973-74 marked the Millsaps Players' Fiftieth Season— and, in honor of the
golden anniversary, Director Lance Goss decided to present five major pro-
ductions. He chose his plays from the cream of contemporary British and
American theatre. They included Robert Bolt's Vivat! Vivai Regina!, the his-
tory of the conflicts between Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I; Tennessee
Williams' The Night of the Iguana, a sophisticated comedy considered one of
Coward's best; and Barry England's Conduct Unbecoming, a recent whodunit
which delighted Arts and Lecture Series members. Goss closed the year with
Rodgers' and Hammerstein's phenomenal hit, The Sound of Music.
