Troubadours

A remarkably talented, versatile group of young
performers, they have ammassed a wealth of experi-
ence in a few short years: six international tours, in-
cluding jaunts to Europe, the Caribbean, Iceland,
Newfoundland, and Romania; countless appear-
ances within their home state (at Arts Festivals. Car-
nival Balls, civic and church functions) as well as in
Colorado and Mexico; guest appearances with the
Memphis Symphony Orchestra and on television;
not to mention the annual Spring Concerts at Mil-
lsaps, and numerous other special performances.

Throughout the years the TROUBADOURS have
continued to demonstrate their talent, versatility,
and enthusiasm, thereby fulfilling a traditional con-
cept of troubadours; taking their talents to the
people.

FOOTBALL

Millsaps football in 1974 experienced a decided up-
swing, as the Majors posted a record of five wins and
three losses. The largest squad in years worked under
the diligent and dedicated leadership of Head Coach
Harper Davis and Assistant Tommy Ranager in estab-
lishing a rugged defense and an opportunistic of-
fense. Rankeil in the nation's top ten of college divi-
sion scoring defenses, the Majors were under serious
consideration for an NCAA post-season bowl game,
leading to the Division III national championship, un-
til they suffered a late season upset at Austin College.

The Majors' opening assignment was arch-rival
Southwestern at Memphis. The home opener tor the
purple and white was a defensive struggle won by the
Majors 6-0, the first of three shutouts during the sea-
son. The lone score of the game came on a pass from
Haygood to Hinton in the second period. The Majors'
defense can be credited with the victory, however, as
successive pass inteference calls placed the ball on
the Millsaps one yard line. With time running out. the
Lynx were unable to cross the goal line on two differ-
ent occasions.

The next week, Millsaps met powerful Georgetown
of Kentucky, an NAIA top twenty team fur the year.
Playing perhaps their best half of the season, the Ma-
jors rolled to a 24-7 halftime lead on touchdowns by
Kirby, Benton, and Goldberg. Brindley added a field
goal. The second half was an entirely different story,
as the offense stalled and the defense experienced its
only sustained breakdown of the year. The George-
town Tigers came away from the contest 26-24
victors.

In their initial road appearance of the 1974 season,
the Majors fought off numerous turnovers and costly
penalties to defeat old advisary Sewanee. 7-0, on a
ten yard sprint by Haygood.

The Millsaps Majors returned home after an open
date to square off against outmanned Principia in the
annual Homecoming game. The old grads were not
disappointed as Millsaps ground out a hard earned
24-0 victory over the visiting Tigers. Hinton, Freeman,
Brindley. and Goldberg tallied six points each m the
wins.

Beginning the second half of the season, the Majors
traveled all the wa\ to Abilene. Texas, to battle the
Indians of McMurry College. Leading 14-10 early in
the third quarter, the Majors succumbed to a late
rally by the Indians, losing 24-14. Scoring for the Ma-
jors in the defeat at the hands of a strong McMurry
squad were Hinton and Kirby with touchdowns and
Brindley on the two conversions.

The Maryville College Scots were the next obstacle
for Millsaps, as the Majors made the trip to East Ten-
nessee for the annual battle with Maryville. A strong
defensive effort was instrumental in the victory.
Heading the defense for Millsaps were linebackers
Maples, Jurney, and Richards, the latter returning a
late Maryville pass for a touchdown. Also playing a
major role in the 21-7 win was tailback Shaw, in his

first game at that position, as he rambled for over 150
yards and two scores. The only Maryville points
came on a third period kick-off return of 101 yards.

With a bowl bid a possibility, Millsaps traveled to
Sherman, Texas, to play Austins College's Kangaroos.
The game was marked by heavy rains, deep mud, 30
degree weather and 40 mile an hour winds; the Ma-
jors surrendered the ball twice in the early minutes,
both times deep in their own territory, yielding the
Austin squad, winless on the year, ten quick points.

Down this early in the game, Millsaps found it diffi-
cult to move the ball as the weather impeded both the
ground and air attacks. Unable to overcome its costly
mistakes, the Majors lost the game 10-0, and perhaps
they lost even more in losing the bowl consideration.

Determined to attone for the loss at Austin, the 1974
Millsaps Majors held highly regarded Trinity of
Texas to a single field goal before a closing game
home audience. The come from behind win was typi-
cal of the entire season for the Majors. The defense
gave a strong performance and the offense overcame
its own errors to score in the clutch, when they were
needed most. The late, fourth quarter touchdown
pass to split end Aldy from Haygood was Aldy's only
score of the year, but it might just have been the most
important score of the year, as it enabled the Majors
to claim their biggest victory in the season finale, 7-3,
and it assured yet another winning season for the
Millsaps Majors and their coaches, Davis and
Ranager.

BASKETBALL

The 1974-75 Millsaps Basketball Season was much
less than desirable as the Majors suffered one of their
worst losing streaks in several years. By the end of
the long year, the Millsaps cage crew had encoun-
tered 24 seasonal defeats and only one victory.

Lacking height, quickness, and especially experience,
the young squad under the instruction of Bob Booth,

led at halftime in over 50% of the contests but were
unable to carry the edge to the buzzer.

Their single win came against the Southwestern
Lynx's (Memphis) in the most exciting game played
in the newly finished PAC. The Majors experienced
the feeling of winning only after double overtime
against the visitors.

TENNIS

The Millsaps netters, who saw a tremendous im-
provement in their calibre of tennis play, finished the
spring season with eleven wins and ten losses.

Coach Jim Montgomery stated that this year's team
was the hardest working team that he had ever had at
Millsaps, and pointed toward their fourth place finish
in the Mississippi Intercollegiate Tournament as a
true indication of the squad's strength.

Junior Elizabeth Allen had an outstanding individual
record of 25-7 for the year, which included the
Women's Indoor Championship in the first ever In-
door MIT held in the Millsaps PAC.

It just won't keep!

Too bad, but you can't put electricity in a jar and
keep it!

No, electricity has to be generated and
transmitted at the very instant you need it. And
as western Mississippi grows and develops.
more and more electricity will be needed.

That's why Mississippi Power & Light is
constructing Grand Gulf Nuclear Station: to be
ready with dependable electric power. All you
need... when you need it!
