INTRODUCTOPiY CIlAPTErv.

Several of the older memliers of the W^ooJ Fauiily having

t , ", died receiitlv, I felt that some reeord of the I'ainilv ouofht to

^, ~ he made befoi-e the present gencratiou should pa.ss away. In

seareluni^ for names, dates, ct<.'.. I found a record of the Tyler,

Taft, Wood, Bares, and iiiU Families, eomtiiled by Newell

.■. ^~^ Tyler of Worcester, to wliich i am indchted for iidormation

f ' concerning' ^^olomon Wood, Jr.. and his son Simeon's fanuly.

I

Solomon Wood, Jr., was born in 1702, lived at Uxbridge for

i ^ several years, and was buried in Dudley, Mass., in 1780. For

\ ~\ some time I could leafu nothing previous to this date, (1702,)

but after writing to parties in Uxbridge, xMondon, and other
places, several times without success, I visited Uxbridge, ]\ren-
don, and Farnumsville, and, at last, found the record of Solo-
mon Wood, Sr., father of the above, who died in Uxbridge in
1752, and his wife, :\r'iry (Ilazeltine) died in 1749. Both of
these were Ijuried in Uxbridge.

From 1720 to 17o0, Solomon Wood transferred about twen-
ty-one different lots of land, from one to forty acres each, to
his son, Solomon, Jr.

Uxhridge was set off from Mendon in 1727, and that year
Solomon Wood, Jr., was Moderator, Town Treasurer, Iligh-
i i way Surveyor, etc. Later, he was chosen a member of the

I ~V. committee on building a church. He was one of the Board of

\ ^ Selectmen several times Iietween tlie years 1738 and 17G5. In

I 17G2, he was Representative to the General Court. In 1759,

I he is called Ca[»tain, and al^out 17G3, Colonel Wood.

T- 1937^

I find that Solomon AVo( d paid .£3. Cs. 8d., and his son,
Simeon, X2. towards a rhurcli. Afterwards they eacli paid
£S. 9s. for Xo. 11 pew. Eiuiit or nine others l»y the name of
Wood also paid sums for The same oi)ject.

I fonnd later, the parents of Solomon Wood, Sr.. to he
Thomas and Axx. who are lirst mentioned in Rowley. .Mass.,
in 1GC)4, when they were married. I have no eertain icnowl-
edge as to the jdac- from whence Thomas came, but proljahly
was born in England about; lo-".5.

One record giv--s a William Wood who eanio from Matlock.
Derbyshire, England, in li;:''.S. at the ag-o of ."iG, with his neph-
ew, Hon. Thonas Flint, aiid settled in Concord. He died Ihiy
14, 1671, au'ed <"?'.'. He hs supposed to have been the acute,
author of a book entitled, " New Enuiand L'r(jspect.'' Shat-
tnck says his children wim-o : Michael, Uurh, Abi-aham, Isaac,
Thomas or Thompson, Jacob, John, and Aijiuail, which is
probably correct, althougii some accounts g-ivc him only the
first two and 3Iichael the rest. Eossiiily tlie Thomas above
mentioned may be the one found in Rowley in 1654, but I
have been unable to ascertain positively in regard to that.
