IN MEMORIAM

The late Dr. Richard L. Caylor, Head of the Science De-
partment, came to Delta State College in 1931, and left on
April 27, 1958. He lives in the hearts of those whom he taught
and of those who knew and loved him. He lives in the work
he did not ordy at Delta State, but in all the United States. He
lives with God . . .

Dedication

The staff of the 1959 BROOM, on behalf of the student body of Delta
State College, wishes to express appreciation to one who we think has added
much to the standing and' good spirit of Delta State. His untiring effort is an
example of true wisdom and intellectual leadership. Serving as a personal
friend and advisor to the students, he is admired and respected by all who know
him. With gratitude in our hearts for the work he has done at Delta State in
the time that he has been with us, we respectfully dedicate this, the 1959
BROOM, to Dean T. D. Young.

delta state beauties

Bella ^tate aiollegE

ClEtoclmtd, JiltBBiBBtppt

To our readers:

It has become a tradition here at Delta State College
that the most beautiful girl to be featured in the BROOM
be selected from the five beauties who are elected by the
student body in our annual TrfHO'S WHO contest. The pictures
of these five girls are sent to some well-known person
usually in the entertainment world, and he or she selects
the most beautiful girl.

This year the most beautiful girl was chosen by Wink
Martindale of WHBQ Radio and Television.

Mr, Martindale chose Mrs. Nancy Whittaker as the
Most Beautiful Girl at Delta State College.

With pride, the BROOM presents the Most Beautiful
Girl at Delta State College for 1959.

Sincerely

Every student at Delta State is a member of the STUDENT GOVERNMENT
ASSOCIATION. Through this organization, each is able to state his views
on any subject of student concern and to work for any condition that he may
want to exist at Delta State. The executive cabinet and the honor councils
are the leaders of the "voice of the students." Participation in student govern-
ment is encouraged by the faculty because of its value as training for life in
a democracy.

The 1958 Delta State Statesmen, beset by early injuries and lack of per-
sonnel, ended the season with a 2 won and 6 lost record.

The Statesmen opened the season here on Delta Field and were defeated by
a superior Northeast Louisiana team, 23 to 0. The Statesmen threatened to
score several times during the contest but were unable to come up with the
scoring punch.

For the next contest, the Statesmen traveled to Troy, Alabama, to take on
the Troy State Red Wave. The Statesmen lost a hard fought battle 18 to 0,
and lost tackle John Hamner for the rest of the season with an injury.

The Statesmen broke into the scoring for the first time against Arkansas
A&M here on Delta Field, but lost by a close 13 to 7 margin. Sammy Ken-
dricks was the man who crossed the goal line for the first Delta tally of the
season.

After an open date, the Statesmen played host to Arkansas State Teachers
and lost a thriller by a bare 27 to 25 count. The Statesmen were leading
during the last half, but a last minute pass play for the Arkansas Teachers
gave them the final two point margin for the victory at Delta's Homecoming.
Sammy Kendricks and Slick McCool each picked up two touchdowns for the
right to lead the Statesmen.

The Martin Branch of the University of Tennessee were sited for the next
opponents here on Delta Field and the Statesmen were shut-out by the Junior
Vols by a 14 to count.

The Statesmen caught fire in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and downed Henderson
State by a 13 to 6 count. Slick McCool was again the big gun for the Statesmen,
scoring both touchdowns and running the extra point.

The Statesmen rounded out the season with an impressive 28 to victory
over the Livingston State Tigers. Slick McCool led ^he offensive attack with
two TD's and one extra point to round out his college career. Sammy Kendricks
also scored on a 33-yard run, and Jimmy Wade tallied once and booted three
extra points.

1958 Baseball

Delta State's baseball team of 1958 posted one of the finest records in the school's
history. The GREENIES won nine games and lost only four in a long, wet season. With
only three graduating seniors on the team, Delta State can look forward to another fine
team this year.
