DEDICATION

The 1979 BUFFALO is dedicated to Dr. C. Robert
Wetzel, Professor of humanities and philosophy, in
recognition of his service and love for Milligan College
and its students. Dr. Wetzel has been both mentor and
close friend to many students here. From the world of
Wittgenstein to that of Elk Park, NC, Dr. Wetzel has
shown his students what it means to be a philosopher
as well as a dedicated Christian. Those who value his
guidance and friendship are grateful to have been able
to know him. May God bless Dr. Wetzel as he continues
in Christian love to serve those who need him.

This year Milligan tried something new. In past
years, only two plays were produced. This year
marks the first, in a long time, that four plays were
produced, two in the fall and two in the spring.

In order to make things easier, "The Miracle
Worker" was cast in the spring of 1978. This enabled
the cast to concentrate on putting the show together
in less than three weeks. For their efforts, "The Mira-
cle Worker" opened the season with enthusiasm and
excitement. Besides opening the season, the cast and
crew, under the direction of Ira Read,

dedicated this performance of "The Miracle
Worker", our first production in the Derthick
Hall Theatre, to the students, faculty, and
friends of Milligan College who by their efforts
have maintained and enriched the tradition of
the theatre at Milligan College.

The scenes here show the many
facets of the play, from beginning to
end. "The Miracle Worker" is the story
of Helen Keller as a child, lost in dark-
ness and silence. It is her teacher Annie
Sullivan, who was once also blind, that
unlocks the door for Helen. This
Achievement comes only after high
tempers, a jealous brother, and a com-
plete lack of concern for Helen's wel-
fare by her family. It is a heartwarming
play that the audiences thoroughly en-
joyed.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

The fall musical for the 1978-79 season was the well
acclaimed "Fiddler on the Roof". The show ran for three
nights, Nov. 9, 10, and 11, in Seeger Chapel during Prospective
Student/Alumni Weekend. "Fiddler on the Roof" is based on
Sholem Aleichem's stories of peasant life in czarist Russia.
Under the direction of Ira Read, the musical portrayed these
stories through music and dance. John Wakefield supervised
vocal direction with David McKenzie as conductor. Jan Gross
was in charge of choreography. Associate Director and Pro-
ducer were Paul Blowers and Terri Newton. These people,
together with many others, gave us well remembered perfor-
mances.

The custom has been to do a
Shakespearean play every other
year. However, since "Much Ado
About Nothing" was such a smash
hit plans were made to possibly do
Shakespeare more often. "Much
Ado About Nothing" ran four
nights, March 7, 8, 9, 10 to accom-
modate the large audiences. The di-
rector and producer was Ira Read
with Jack Knowles, B. J. Morrison,
and Dennis Elkins assisting. The
play brought back many Milligan
alumni to add to the level of talent
that produced an exceptional good
show.

Each has his own highway

And you and I must travel different paths,

But, in the turn, they may approach

And be so near — that on the top of some brave hill,

Where freely blows the careless winds at will,

We may meet gladly, and so hand in hand.

May talk awhile, and let the hours stand.

Many thanks are extended to the people who helped to make the 1979
BUFFALO. Although many people contributed ideas and suggestions, the
following people gave of their time and their talent to the yearbook: Rod Irvin
— yearbook advisor, Dr. Euel Ownby — Publications Committee, Cindy
Mitchell — business manager, Kathy Bailey, Dennis Elkins, Chris Hunkins,
Theresa Gee, Amy Bucher, Minta Berry and Cort Davisson.

I would also like to express my gratitude to the photographers for dedicating
their time and much hard work to the BUFFALO. The 1979 photographers
include Steve Adams, Mark Siebert, Steve Leach, Scott Allbee, Jeff Cook, Gilan
Wetzel, Mark Richardson, Minta Berry and Karen Smoak.
