FOREWORD
This book is intended for those who desire to obtain without
a teacher a foundation for the Spanish language, an end easily
reached by carefully following the preliminary instructions given
in it.
The lessons herein contained cover the necessary range of
subjects more frequently touched in life, and shall enable the
students to acquire soon a conversable knowledge.
I have purposely omitted everjrthing tending to show the
pronunciation of Spanish, with a combination of English sounds.
It is positively impossible to represent the sounds of Spanish in
any other language, without seriously misleading the student.
Spanish, being essentially phonetic, is pronounced as it is
written, and written as it is pronounced. Vowels have always
the same sound; there is only one silent letter. By mastering
the sound of vowels it will be easy to read and speak all there is
in the book.
Few rules are found in it. The fewer rules for beginners the
better. And I have endeavored to present, not only the fewer
rules, but almost no rules at all.
Careful and frequent study of the Spanish Alphabet, as it is
explained in the following page, will enable you to read the con-
tents and learn them thoroughly. The principal tenses of the
verbs are given in every lesson — a practical combination which
surely will bring forward its advantages.
The importance of Spanish for business men of America can
not be disputed. Contrary to Europe where more than twenty
languages are spoken, in this continent there are only two — Spanish
and English. Since transactions grow daily, and bind more and
more the business people of America, it is plain that these two
languages should be spoken by all.

USEFUL INFORMATION
The Metric System, is recognized by almost all the Spanish
American Republics, and has officially replaced the old standards
of weights and measures.
The unit of weight is the kilogram (kilogramo) and the unit of
measure is the meter (metro).
The meter (metro) is a unit of length equal to one ten
millionth part of the distance measured on a meridian of the earth,
from the Equator, to the Pole.
The kilometer (kilometro) or one thousand meters (metros) is
used to measure long distances, and is about five eighths of a
mile, (milla).
One English mile, measures 1760 yards (yardas) and 1609
meters (metros).
One mining "pertenencia" consists of one hectare (hectarea)
the hectare being a surface measuring 100 meters on each side, or
10000 square meters. It is equal to about two acres and a half.
One acre isi a surface of about 4000 square meters.

VOWELS AND CONSONANTS
VOCALES Y CONSONANTES
Vowels, in Spanish, are always pronounced fully and clearly,
and their sound is almost invariably the same. Proper pronuncia-
tion of the vowels, is the key to the lan^age. Spanish is read
easily, if one uses the English sound of the consonants, with the
Spanish sound of the vowels.
The vowels are six: A, E, I, O, U and Y. This one when it
stands by itself or at the termination of words. Otherwise it
sounds like English, as in the words You, Yonder. The following
English words can be taken as standard for the Spanish vowels.

used only in two or three words; sound same as English.

is silent.
R. has two sounds, in the same cases as in English.
RR. same as English in the words Error, Horror,
n. has no equivalent in English. The syllable GN of the French
word "cognac" is the perfect sound in Spanish.
Y. standing by itself means "and" having the sound of English
E. Man and woman — El hombre y la mujer. Cat
and mouse — El gato y el raton.

BUSINESS SPANISH
"Business Spanish and Commercial Vocabulary," by Professor
Alejandro D. Ainslie, published by himself at San Francisco, is a
little Spanish grammar that seems to be admirably designed to
give a practical knowledge of the language in the shortest time.

Alejandro Ainslie of Mexico City, is a compact booklet intended for
those who desire to obtain without a teacher a foundation for the
Spanish language. The author's principle seems to be to hurry
through the rules and push on with translation. . The vocabulario

Spanish for the business man in the form of a compact self-
teaching course is well handled by Alejandro D. Ainslie of Mexico
City in his new publication, "Business Spanish and Commercial
Vocabulary." The author believes that, inasmuch as there are only
two languages used in the Western Hemisphere, every business
man in the United States should be familiar with them both. With
this in mind, he has prepared his Spanish course, which seems to
cover the subject well and in business-like manner. — San Jose
