The Alpha Tau Omega Tennessee Omega

Chapter was established at the University of the

South in 1877 as the first Fraternity at Sewanee.

To bind men together in a brotherhood based

upon eternal and immutable principles, with a

bond as strong as right itself and as lasting as

humanity; to know no North, no South, no East, no

West, but to know man as man, to teach that true

men the world over should stand together and
contend for supremacy of good over evil; to teach,
not politics, but morals; to foster, not partisanship,
but the recognition of true merit wherever found; to

have no narrower limits within which to work

together for the elevation of man than the outlines

of the world: these were the thoughts and hopes

uppermost in the minds of the founders of the

Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.

women realized the need for an intentionally

smaller sorority so that the bonds of sisterhood

could be strong and life-lasting. The sisters of

Alpha Tau Zeta are a close-knit group with real

concern and caring for one another.

The lota Nu chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha was

formed when Sewanees maverick local fraternity,

Upsilon Sigma, went national in 1963. The first

Sewanee Lambda Chi Alphas believed that

creativity, respect, and individualism were principle

pillars of strong brotherhood. This is a unique

tradition the current brothers proudly uphold. The

Lambda Chi Alphas are a diverse group, and we

consider this an asset. Standing together as

brothers, we are committed to excellence and

leadership. But keep in mind that our brotherhood

is founded on development of the individual.

Phi Gamma Delta is not simply a social club. We thrive

The fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta was founded in 1848

motto Friendship, the sweetest influence. Internally, we

have forged a solid core of unity, for each member

knows that he can count on all of his brothers at any

time. Externally, Fijis can be found in most aspects of

Sewanee life as well. We currently boast members if

the Order of the Gownsmen, the Disciple Committee,

the Orientation committee, the Emergency Medical

well as Proctors, Assistant Proctors and members in

In the spring of 1977, the first sorority at Sewanee was

founded. The name of this sorority is Theta Kappa Phi,

and its purpose is to bring together women of the

college for social interaction and participation in the

community while always upholding the traditional goals

and ideal of The University of the South. Theta Kappa

Phi takes pride in the many facets of university life in

which our members are involved, which range from

varsity sports to the student government. Many of our

members belong to the Order of the Gownsmen, the

Student Assembly, the Honor Council, Phi Beta Kappa,

or are active as well as dorm staff and Wilkins

Scholars. The variety of activities in which our members

participate reflects the individuality our group strives for

while always remaining a unified group.

Theta Pi sorority is a well-rounded, fun-loving, and
spirited organization. Founded in the winter of 1979,
weve grown to become one of the largest and nnore
diverse sororities on campus with over one hundred
members hailing from ail over the country. We pride
ourselves on being a close-knit group whose individual
personalities combine to produce a dynamic collective

one. Our sorority was founded on the principle of

encouraging both intellectual and spiritual growth while

at the same time fostering lasting friendship. Youll find

a Theta Pi in virtually every aspect of student life at

Sewanee. Theta Pis are active in Big People for Little

People, Young Life, Habitat for Humanity the Sewanee

Animal rescue League, varsity sports and honorary

academic societies.

Congratulitions and Best Wishes
for a Wonderful Future

Wow! My son the Geologist!
We are so incredibly proud of
you and your accomplishments.
Congratulations for achieving the
goals you have set for yourself.

Choosing to go to Sewanee was one great choice
among many good choices you have made for
yourself these past few years. We are grateful
for the educational opportunities they have afforded
you and the excellent professors, leaders and friends you have had.

By wisdom a house is built, and
through understanding it is established;
Through knowledge its rooms are
filled with rare and beautiful treasures

Proverbs 24:3-4

The way that you have taken advantage
of those opportunities and your insatiable
quest for knowledge is inspiring.
Your future truly is wide open.

Wherever life and learning take you Luke,
continue to weigh your choices carefully
and keep on dreaming up the next adventure.

1 can hardly to wait to see what happens next
Cheers to you and your future.
Love Mom, Dad & Dylan

Sea-Fever
By John Masefield (1878-1967)

I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

.\nd all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.

And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking.

And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide

Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;

And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,

And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life.

To the guU's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife;

And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover

And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

All our love. Mom, Dad & Sarah

Ode to Michael Oilale

There once was a student named Michael

Who came up to the mountain for a four-year cycle.

To the 6AEs he did belong; and then the Wellingtons came along,
Not to mention Deb balls, Bangladesh and beer pong.

For sure, all of this bliss he will certainly miss,
But the next step will be even better than this!

Love,

Mom. Dad and Will
