CARONTAWAN INTERVIEW: DR. LAWRENCE PARK

a candid conversation with the President of Mansfield State College

CARONTAWAN: What do you
feel is the
cause of the
general lack of
concern by the
students on this
campus to get
involved?
Dr. Park: "I don't think it is differ-
ent from any other place
I've been. It's just a com-
plaint that the students
always seem to have
about themselves, hlow-
ever, it depends on the
issue. Education is a per-
sonal matter and what
happens is that students
get deeply involved in
their own work. Educa-
tion is time consummg
and students don't want
to get sidetracked. "

CARONTAWAN: What is the fu-
ture of blacks
on this campus?

Dr. Park: "I expect in the foresee-
able future that we will
have more blacks here.
In order for the black
student to be successful
on this campus, the cam-
pus has to change in
some respects. People
have got to be more un-
derstanding. I think we
have to make changes to
provide more opportuni-
ties for the black stu-
dents. Now it is a matter
of how fast and how
many students we can in-
tegrate effectively. '

70

CARONTAWAN: Are there any
changes in

store for Mans-
field State Col-
lege in the
near future?
Are there any
changes that
you would like
to see initi-
ated?
Dr. Park: "There are many I would
like to see. Whether or
not they can be initiated
is something else again. I
have proposed to the
faculty a three year B.A.
degree plus a two year
service concept related
to several fields. In the
near future, we will have
added strength in the
Art and Science pro-
grams with perhaps some
limitations to the number
of students in teacher
education. What growth
we have will be primarily
in areas other than
teacher education, ex-
cept for areas where
there is still a high or
new demands."
3ARONTAWAN: Do you favor
the present
sports program
we have here
at Mansfield
State College?
Dr. Park: "I favor a reasonably
strong varsity sports
program. I have reser-
vations about the way it
is funded. I believe var-
sity athletics add to the
dimensions of the Col-
lege and this College is
better for having a pro-
gram. We may be
spending a dispropor-
tionate amount of en-

ergy on the varsity pro-
gram and not enough
on what I call carry-
over sports' — those
things that would be
useful all their lives. I
hope students learn to
play and appreciate
golf, tennis, and other
activities he can play
until he is 80 years old.
I also think in our pro-
gram that we don't give
fair enough shake to
women and I hope to
see some changes
there. "
CARONTAWAN: If you had one
wish concern-
ing Mansfield
State College,
what would
that wish be?

Dr. Park: "If I had one wish, I'd
like to be able to move
back about ten years in
time and really have the
chance to do planning
for the period we are in
now. The reason I say
that is because that par-
ticular ten year period
was probably the most
exciting in terms of
higher education in the
whole country. The next
ten year period may not
have the advantages
that the previous period
had."

MANSFIELD STATE COLLEGE

Indicating a broadened concept of professional
preparation, the Pennsylvania Lesiglature authorized
the general title, Mansfield State College, on January
8, I960. With the commencement of this twelve-year
period and the continuing influx of students came four
new dormitories — Oak Hill hiall. Hickory Hall, Laurel
Manor, Maple Hall. However, the expansion of the
intellectual and physical capacities of the students in
accordance with ever-growing volume of knowledge
necessitated further changes, including the "Hut";
Manser Dining Hall; Butler Center; Memorial Hall, the
all-important Student Union Building; additions to the
Administration Building and the Library; the Planetar-
ium; and Decker Gymnasium.

116

Such were the at+emp+s to keep pace with the demands for higher education.
With better learning facilities and more complete preparation in teacher educa-
tion and liberal arts, Mansfield State College could thus contribute to the pur-
suit of higher learning as proposed by Col. Hoard.

BASKETBALL

Although M.S.C. failed +o receive a bid for a confer-
ence section ber+h, it is not an indication of the team's in-
ability to play ball, but of the overall competition in the
conference.

Coach Wilson's "netmen" compiled an overall win-loss
record of 14 wins and 8 losses, losing such tight games as
with Cheyney State, which went into double overtime, to
be lost in the last 2 minutes of play.

Mansfield was blessed this year with the presence of
scoring ace Art Allen, who, it seems, did everything but
pass out the towels during halftime.

Also returning was ace Dennis Lomax, along with Marty
Brumme, Walt Winch, Dave Lynch, and Bill Boyce.

We say good-bye to senior Co-captain Reggie Lang
who has been a necessary starting asset to the team and
to seniors Steve Bryant and Hal Price.

The M.S.C. "Ma+men" seemed to come out ahead
this year, chalking up the best win-loss record in five
years despite the seemingly poor attendance at the
home matches. With 10 wins and 10 losses and
against a very stiff overall conference schedule, the
Mountie Srapplers managed to beat the tough com-
petition and come out on top with a respectable
record. The team, coached by Mr. Shaw, was headed
by tri-captains Jack Martin, Don McKee, and Mike
Picketts.

The Women's Field Hockey team had a
winning season with two wins and losses.
They began the season with a scrimmage
against Susquehanna University on Septem-
ber 27. Several goals were scored by each
team. This showed the strong defensive pos-
itions but a definite weakness on the offen-
sive. They opened the regular season
against Lycoming College with a decisive 5-
I victory. Here the line and halfbacks be-
gan to work together as a unit and showed
some offensive drive. The defense also
played an outstanding game. However, two
weeks later, in a return game with Lycoming
it was much different. This was a brilliant
defensive game with "Peanut" Frailey scor-
ing the decisive goal late in the game. The
Bloomsburg game was rained out and be-
cause of lateness in the season it was not
rescheduled. Five seniors played their last
game for M.S.C. They were half backs M.
Fly, C. Gabel, N. Kocher, and M. Himmel-
berger and goalie, S. Lamborn.

SPECIAL EVENTS

PARENTS
WEEKEND

SEPTEMBER 24-26. 1971

. . . This year Parent's Weekend was ac-
claimed as the greatest in the history of the
college and over 2,000 anxious Moms and
Dads were on hand to witness the terrific
football game with Bridgewater State of
Mass. ... to the delight of all those who
attended, a capacity crowd in Decker
viewed an exhibition NBA basketball game
between the Buffalo Braves and the Cleve-
land Cavaliers ... a lot more happened,
but unfortunately went unrecorded for any
future eyes to read . . .

189

... a conglomeration of fans waiting for
the spectacular outcome of the football
game with Cheyney State ... a gala
parade downtown and the crowning of
Charlotte Morgis as the reigning MSC
Homecoming Queen of 1972 ... a con-
cert in the newly opened Decker Gym
with Sugar Loaf and NYRE who saved
the weekend when Linda Ronstadt can-
celled out at the last moment . . . and
most important the students and alumni
who managed to survive it through a not
so boring weekend at MSC . . . and
would you believe it, no snow, but rain?!

the last remains of a fall

people i have known
and places i have been,
never seemed to turn out
what they said it should.
i can only hope
that someday soon,
I'll become the man
i said i would.

I'll build my tomorrows
on yesterday's dreams,
and look towards the future
to a brighter beginning,
where my goals will be lofty
and my ambitions will be high,
where man can find man
and there find, eternity.
