A Sermon Preached at the Opening of the General Assembly.

peculiar interest.

City of Richmond, Va. PHii.ADELPHrA, 1812.

This discourse is entitled " I'ears of Sympathy," and was deliv-
ered'in the City of Philadelphia, Dec. 26, 181 1, at the request
of the Virginia students attached to the medical class in the
I University of Pennsylvania.

. An Inaugural Address. New York, 1S12.

This address was dehvered by Dr. Alexander on the occasion of
his inauguration as the first Professor in the Theological Semi-
nary at Princeton, N. J., Aug. 12, 181 2. Besides this address,
the volume contains a sermon by the Rev. Samuel Miller, D.D.,
and a charge to the Professor and Students by the Rev. Philip
Milledoller, D.D.

A Missionary Sermon Preached at the Opening of the General
Assembly in Philadelphia. Philadelphia, 1814.

1^ Nature of the Atonement.

A series of short articles published in 1824, in The Christian
Advocate, in opposition to the views of Professor Murdock.

A Brief Outline of the Evidences of the Christian Religion.

Princeton, 1825.

In 1823 Dr. Alexander was informed by one of the tutors that
infidel sentiments were current among the students in the Col-
lege, and was requested to ])repare something to counteract
these skeptical tendencies. This work was the result. It was
soon republished in England and Scotland, and translated into
several languages, and is the text-book in many colleges and
schools. It has passed through many editions.

^ The Canon of the Old and New Testaments Ascertained.

Princeton, 1826,

This work was reprinted in London in 1828, and in 1833 with an
Introductory Preface by the Rev. John Morrison, D.D. In
this preface he says, " The name of Dr. Alexander is already
well known to the British public, in consequence of his distin-
guished work entitled 'Brief Outline of the Evidences of the
Christian Religion,' which has been published in two or three
distinct forms in Scotland and England. It is impossible for
any judge to read that acute and masterly performance without
feeling that Dr. Alexander is one of those eminent men who
are destined to extend and perpetuate the literary and theologi-
cal fame of the New World. He is one of a race of divines
who, within the last thirty or forty years, has done much to-
wards elevating the philological character of the United States
to an almost equal rank with that of the parent country."

In 1835 this work was incorporated into the Biblical Family
Library, published in Edinburgh, with notes by the Rev. Da-
vid Dickson, D.D., who characterizes it as " by far the most
complete view of the whole subject that has hitherto been pub-
lished."

A Sermon Before the American Board of Commissioners for For-
eign Missions. Boston, 1829.

volume in 1840. In 1853 the work appeared in a German trans-
lation. This book contains the results of the author's matured
thinking upon the inward work of grace, and has been exten-
sively useful. No one of his writings more fully reveals his own
opinions and feelings upon the rise and progress of godliness in
the soul.

sons and the extreme heat, he was, during the address, seized
with a faintness which was alarming, and which made it neces-
sary for him to be carried into the open air. No expostulations,
however, could induce him to desist. He therefore returned
and completed the delivery of the address.

2 vols. Ph 1 1. \ DELPHI. A, 1838, 183Q

In 1830. Dr. Alexander began a series of letters in the Newark
Daily Advertiser, under the signature of Charles Quill. The
first series of forty-six papers was collected in a volume enti-
tled " The American Mechanic," and published by Perkins, of
Philadelphia, in 1838. The second series of forty- five papers
did not appear in the newspapers, but was published by Perkins,
in 1839, entitled "The Workingman." The author says that
this volume is the same in plan with the first, but pitched two
or three degrees higher as to style and allusion, etc. In 1847
Martine published a new edition of this work, entitled " The
American Mechanic and Workingman."

Lame John. Amkrican Sunday-School Union, 1S40.

He began this book under the title of " Lame Jack," but the re-
semblance to Miss Edgeworth's "Lame Jervas," and Captain
Marryat's "Poor Jack," led him to change the name.

4 Letters to a Very Young Lady. American Sunday-School Union, 1843.

' Letters to a Very Young Lady ; ' it is not certain whether by
Chalmers or Macaulay. It is likely to move both hemispheres."

WRITINGS OF

THE REV. JOSEPH ADDISON ALEXANDER, D.D.

I

T A Geography of the Bible. American Sunday-School Union, 1830.

This is the joint work of Dr. James W. Ale.xander and Dr. Joseph
Addison Alexander.

-I'The Earlier Prophecies of Isaiah. New York, 1846.

-J" The Later Prophecies of Isaiah. New York, 1847.

Dr. Alexander began writing this commentary about 1836. For
the next ten years he went over and over the subject with his
classes in the Seminary, and rewrote the whole many times be-
fore he was prepared to print. The first volume appeared in
1846, and the second in 1847.

M. De Lengerke, a distinguished professor at Kcinigsburg,
author of a commentary on Daniel and the Psalms, in an article
in La Reformation, ^wt.'-, his estimate of this work: "C'est

An edition of this work was published in Glasgow, with an
able introduction by the Rev. John Eadie, LL.D., Professor of
Biblical Literature in the United Presbyterian Church. In this
introduction he places Dr. Alexander above all commentators
on Isaiah who had preceded him, not even excepting Vitringa
and Calvin.

The Evangelical Magazine of England thus eulogizes the
author : " Truly such a theologian as Professor Alexander is a
credit to this country and a blessing to the age. His introduc-
tion alone to his commentary on Isaiah, is a contribution of
surpassing value. It evinces a vast range of acquaintance with
the early and modern schools of interpretation."

In 1857 Dr. Alexander pubhshed an abridged edition of this
work in two volumes i2mo.

32 The Rev. Joseph Addison Alexander, D.D.

The Psalms Explained. 3 vols. New York, 1850.

In 1849 Dr. Alexander began to write his work on the Psalms.
In a letter to his publisher, he says : " My plan is to convey to
the English reader, in the shortest space, the true sense, as
determined by the best and latest exegesis. This I do, when
it is possible, by mere translation ; if not, by paraphrase ; if
more is wanted, by brief comment."

Primitive Church Officers. New York, 1851.

The Acts of the Apostles Explained. 2 vols. New York, 1857.

This work was projected in 1852. The first plan of the author
was to write a critical commentary on the plan of his Isaiah.
He began printing in 1856, and had already stereotyped 100
pages, when his plan v.as changed, occasioned by a proposition
from Di^ Hodge that they should jointly write popular com-
mentaries on the whole of the New Testament — Dr. Alexander
to prepare the Gospels and Acts. This is the first work on
this plan.

The Gospel According to Mark Explained. New York, 185S.

This volume appeared in October, 1858. Dr. James W. Alexan-
der', writing to the author, says : " I pronounce this by far vjour
best work. It is eminently readable. It contains episodical
passages very agreeable to a purist in language. Especially
have you hit off the rendering into happy equivalents in sound
English. The diction is better than in any of your opera.
Two qualities are quite unusual: i. You place the reader (and
this more than any expositor known to me) near the stand-point
of a Greek scholar; and, 2. You give vividness to the narra-
tive and remove the integument or rusty coating of custom
and daily use."

Sermons. 2 vols. New York, i860.

These forty-thr^ sermons were collected and published by the
Rev. .S. D. Alexander, D.D., after the death of the author.
They were soon reprinted in Edinburgh, with a preface by the
Rev. Charles Brown, D.D.

The Rev. Joseph Addison Alexander, D.D 33

— The Gospel According to Matthew Explained. New York, 1861.
This is an unfinished work. The first sixteen chapters are com-
plete, but the approaching death of the author permitted him
to give only an analysis of the remaining portion. Just a week
before his death he wrote in his journal, " Finished the analysis
of Matthew xvii.-xxviii."

f -|-Notes on New Testament Literature. New York, 1861.

This volume contains two fragments from the unpublished papers
of Dr. Alexander, compiled by the Rev. S. D. Alexander, D.D.
The first is, " Lectures on New Testament Literature ; " the
second, " Notes on Ecclesiastical History." These are brief
sketches of his lectures, which no one but himself could fill up.
