Once Upon A Time

Once upon a time at a small school in West

Virginia. Potomac State in the fall of 1972.
A time.

A beginning. A new year for us, the students.
Saying goodbyes to parents and experiencing

a new kind of freedom. Being on our own.
A new year. Books. Studying, meeting new

people, Striving to find out what college is

all about.

"\

A confusing time.

Registration. Waiting in what seemed to be
endless lines. Finding the classes that you
want are closed.

Being confronted by sophomores. Upper-
classmen telling you that you have to dish
out money for dorm dues or car stickers.

Buying books. Three or four for some
classes. Thicker than those you had in high
school.

A time.

The first open house.

Going to classes, having to study. Labs.

Professors trying to pound the scientific

method into you.
Taking jobs on the work-study program.

Training.

A time.

Of exploring the different aspects of college

life.
Football games and extra curricular

activities. Studying with a friend.
Spending the afternoon in jam sessions in

the Student Union. Discussions with

fellow students lasting only the afternoon

or until early morning hours.

Study.

Studying all day and night only to find that

there is still more to do. Things left

undone.
Using the library. Some for research. Others

as an escape from the noisy dorms. Or

even to catch the lastest news or

magazine.

Snow.

The first of the year.

A contagious feeling. Being tackled by students you

have not even met before.
Battles between the dorms.
Stepping outside only to find yourself being buried

alive.
Some broken windows. A few bumps and bruises.
A lot of fun.

A time.

Staring at the same buildings day after day.

Going to classes. Making regular stops in the
Union. Monotony.

Monotony occassionally broken bv special
events. Homecoming. Women entering
fields pursued previously only by men.

A time.

Of learning.

Classes. Preparing students for every field of work.

Computer programming, language labs, sewing,

ROTC.
Learning to do, to feel, to think.

A time.

Of struggling. Trying to make it through all

of our classes. Long afternoons spent in

labs. Getting help from others.
Trying to pay attention in class, but being

distracted by a camera.

A time of being.

Being a student. Being a part of the life

at Potomac State.
We made the school year what it was.

A time.

A school year. Sometimes it seemed like

the time was lasting forever. And

sometimes the weeks flew by.
Making dresses, playing sports, eating, and

decorating for special events.
Living. Being a part of the present.

Finals.

Pulling all-nighters every night of the
week. Cramming. Trying to remember
every fact that has been mentioned
during the whole semester.

A time.

A year. A new experience in our

lives.
Friends, activities, classes, cramming,

labs, parties.
Some were the best.
Some were the worst.

A time.

The 1973 school year. Over.

Leaving friends. Only the memories

remain.
Emptiness.
A time and place important only to

those of us who were there.
A time in the lives of students at PSC.

1973 CATAMOUNT

A time.

Of leaving home and being thrown

into a different world. Alone.
Registration. Waiting in lines. Closed classes,

wrong professors, 8 AM classes. Waiting

only to wait some more.
The best of time.
The worst of time.

Phantom parties, dances, weekends.

Finals, term papers, 3-hour labs.
A time of adjustment to dorm life.

Drug raids, panty raids, 2 AM fire drills.

Pulling all-nighters.
Making friends to be always remembered.

Joking at the dinner table. Wasting

time in the Union. A brand new pub.

Open house.
Wondering how the year has gone so fast.

Parting with friends you will never

see again.
Once upon a time at PSC.

Ended. School year 1973.
