^Preface
The exchange of knowledge among investigators in various parts of the world
is an important means of progress in science. The Second World War almost
completely cut off the normal exchange of information between Europe and the
rest of the world. In most fields of study this occasioned little Inconvenience
for American workers because of our predominant scientific position. Further-
more, in certain of the more important sciences there was a modicum of ex-
change through neutral countries, diplomatic channels, and other means.
Since the war strenuous efforts have been and are being made to secure for
libraries important foreign books published during the war and to bring the
periodical files up to date. This country, on a lesser scale, has endeavored to
assist European countries in replenishing their collections of American war-
time publications.
But in grape growing (viticulture) and wine making (enology) there is com-
paratively little interchange of literature or periodicals between the United
States and Europe, even in peacetime. Furthermore, this exchange is limited
to relatively few libraries (chiefly to the University of California and the
United States Department of Agriculture) and to a small number of private
collectors, principally in California. During the war almost no periodicals and
only a few books on viticulture and enology were received from Europe. Since
then the exchange has been erratic and undependable. This is unfortunate be-
cause, although research in these fields was necessarily limited during the
war, important contributions to the literature were made. Europe is the most
important grape- and wine-producing area of the world, and workers there
normally publish a large number of books on viticulture and enology. Without
this material American investigators are severely handicapped. A knowledge
of scientific investigations in Europe on viticulture and enology should be par-
ticularly valuable to those who are doing research here. It should reduce
duplication of work, provide information on new methods of analysis, be use-
ful to those engaged in practical or field applications especially to winery
technicians, and indicate profitable lines of research for future work.
It seemed to us, therefore, desirable to inventory the books and pamphlets
on grapes and wine which were published during the years 1938 through 1948.
Studies were made of the available literature during a sabbatical leave in
Europe in 1947. The present list is not a complete inventory but includes most
of the important publications which have appeared during this period. Libraries,
collectors, and book dealers also may find the list useful although a definitive
bibliography was impossible with the limited funds and time at our disposal.
In order to be of value to our European colleagues, United States publications
have been included.

Introduction
This check list has been limited to books and pamphlets. To include periodi-
cal literature would expand our listing beyond any practical use. This is not
to minimize the value of the periodical literature but it is partly abstracted
in Chemical Abstracts (l), Biological Abstracts (12), Bibliography of Agri-
culture (11). and in the Bulletin de 1'Office International du Vin (32). However,
separate reprints of a few important periodical articles are listed. Annual
publications and bulletins, even when published in a series, of experiment
stations for wines and grapes are included. Reports of congresses entirely or
partly on grapes and wine have also been listed. Laws relating to wines are
given but usually only when they are published separately.
This check list includes only material published between January 1, 1938,
and December 31, 1948. This period was selected because, although the war
did not start until 1939, books printed in 1938 frequently did not come to the
attention of American libraries, reviewers, or collectors before the start of
the war. 1
Although the listing is fairly comprehensive, undoubtedly a number of im-
portant publications have been missed, particularly those in Germany and the
Balkan countries. In preparing the list we have inspected the card catalogues
of the libraries of the University of California, Berkeley, Davis, and Los
Angeles; the United States Department of Agriculture and the Library of Con-
gress, Washington, D.C.; the British Museum, London; Columbia University,
New York; Stanford University, Palo Alto; the John Crerar Library, Chicago;
and the Wine Institute, San Francisco. The personal collection of one of the
authors has been used also. The usual review sources have been checked:

ture (11). Cumulative Book Index (17), Experiment Station Record (21), the
Annuaire and the Bulletin of Office International du Vin (31) (32), the Anais of

It has been difficult to limit the scope of this check list. Mainly nonfiction
publications have been listed. We are interested primarily in books on grapes
and wine. Books on related industries, such as rum or whiskey, have been in-
cluded only if they might be of interest to those engaged in the wine or grape-
brandy industry. Numerous publications on the physiological effects of alco-

hoi are omitted as too remote from the chosen field, but a few of the more
significant books, particularly if referring to wine, are included. Cook books
are not listed unless they contain useful material on wine, which usually they
do not. For the same reason books on the preparation of cocktails have been
omitted unless they have a section on wine.
The style adopted is a compromise between the detailed and meticulous
perfection of the professional bibliographer and a simple listing of authors and
titles. It is hoped that sufficient information is given to differentiate editions,
but it is possible that minor variations between printings may have escaped
our attention. The form is essentially that used by the American Library
Association (3) and the Library of Congress (36) and the information conforms
to that given on the title page of the publications. (See also 24.)
Authors' names are listed alphabetically. Where no author is given and the
publication cannot be classed under any general heading such as "Germany,
Laws, Statutes, etc.," it is entered by title, alphabetically. Under the author's
name, titles are given in order of publication and those within any one year
arranged alphabetically. Immediately following the title, the complete author
or joint-author entry is given. Theoretically this should conform to the title
page. Most trade journals, however, do not give a Ml author entry. Titles of
authors have been omitted. The place of publication follows the author entry.
If the publishing company published in more than one city, the main city is
given, followed by other places of publication. The name of the publisher
follows. When it is not possible to identify the publisher as in private print-
ings or when a job-printing company has acted for a publisher the printer's
name is given if available. Finally, the date of publication is listed. If it is
omitted from the title page but is established by other means, it is given in
brackets. Or if only an approximate date can be determined, this is enclosed
in brackets with a question mark, as [1940? ]. No book has been included un-
less there is some evidence that it was printed within the selected period.
Paging, contents, and size in centimeters are given. Where there is no
title page and the front cover of the book is the source of information for title,
publisher, etc., this is indicated before the paging. Unnumbered pages are
given in brackets, as [21. Illustrations, photographs, graphs, diagrams,
tables, and maps, if any, are listed after the pagination. When the book is part
of a series, a note in parentheses is made, following the size. The original
journal in which reprints appeared is also given in parentheses. To prevent
multiple entries, information on other editions is given. Often a society or
office name appears at the top of a title page. This is listed after the phrase-
"At head of title."
Secondary information about the book from the title or from the text itself
is occasionally given. This includes such data as place and date of a congress
information on the illustrations, translators, transliteration, etc. Finally, a '
brief summary of the contents is given in a separate paragraph.
