Yes, we are the people, we are not false, we are men
because we are real, solitarily existing — musing, creating—
destroying; collectively quibbling — agreeing, disfaming —
honoring, weeping — laughing — praying, we fail
succeed — then doitagain; and all the world — vivacious
dawn, understanding dusk — sighs our sorrows, laughs our
laughs, like jonquils we are — blooming, dying, rising again
with hope. Building and rebuilding, always looking forward,
searching, striving, persevering; the same yet not the same,
something forever new; always shifting, seething,
-changing and ah, but living, now and forever growing . . .

If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the
house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the
threshold of your own mind.

Kahlil Gibran

"Hear these announcements, please." It is eight
a.m. in the Maryville College Chapel. The vigorous
ex-Marine major mounts the platform and begins
reading from hastily scrawled notices handed to
him moments before, interpreting by means of his
own rare inflections, pronouncing the names of
Spanish musicians in his individualized Spanish ac-
cent, and ad libbing when he finds the impulse
irrepressible. "The leader of the service this morn-
ing," he announces matter-of-factly as the President
plunges through the side door, "is the late Joseph
J. Copeland." From the audience comes spontane-
ous applause or a side remark like "Man, he's cool."

He is indeed cool, but to the Maryville College
student body he is much more. Because of his years
as a student here before entering the Marine Corps
during World War I, he represents to us an alum-
nus who in his integrity, loyalty, faith, and service,
typifies the best in the Maryville tradition. At the
same time, because of his thirty years of leadership
as dean (interrupted by service in World War II),
we like to think of him as a symbol of the continu-
ing progress and change of which we are proud —

progress seen this year in the organization of the
American Studies Seminar and the plans for exten-
sive innovations in calendar and curriculum.

From his office in Anderson Hall where he claims
to do little "except look at books, papers, and peo-
ple," he looks deeply into the heart of an institution,
quietly advising and, if necessary, firmly denying,
but always concerning himself sincerely with the
problems of the entire faculty and student body.
While working what seems to be at least a thirty-
hour day, he still finds time for active participation
in the Church, in the Home Avenue Mission, in civic
clubs, in Boy Scouts, in the various education asso-
ciations— and in faculty skits for Barnwarming.

Although he has received many honors during his
lifetime, including a citation for gallantry in action
during World War I, we feel it fitting to add one
more, which might also be called a citation for gal-
lantry in action — this time on the academic front.
To Dr. Frank D. McClelland, whose wisdom has
guided us, whose faith has given us courage, and
whose sincerity has made us believe in him — and in
ourselves, we dedicate the 1967 CHILHOWEAN.

A man with a vision

Meanwhile, back at the barn?

"When I'm alone" — the words tripped off his tongue

As though to be alone were nothing strange.

"When I was young," he said; "when I was young. . . ."

I thought of age, and loneliness, and change.
I thought how strange we grow when we're alone,
And how unlike the selves that meet and talk,
And blow the candles out, and say good night.

Alone. . . . The word life endured and known.
It is the stillness where our spirits walk
And all but inmost faith is overthrown.

— Siegfried Sassoon

The sun rises

This 1 should do as the colors

and the sun sets —

fade in evening

And all that goes between

or deer sleep at dusk

is purple-yellow shadows,

or the bird wakes on

Such life-breath and stranger's eyes

the morning.

that pierce lonely corners

So pale and taunted —

and

We stand and tremble

haunt fire-watches
of the mind . . .
the grip of silence
and we are afraid . . .

Would 1 could blow the candle out —

in the light of other days —
gone and going —

The whirl of dusty moving feet

confounds the tears —
The soul hangs dry-eyed over the sill

Make a perfect pearl from the

And yearns to weep

warm melted wax —

for all the noise.

Then place it from my palm to yours

— Sara V. Humphries

i thank You God for most this amazing
day;for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky;and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun's birthday;this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings;and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any — lifted from the no
of all nothing — human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

— e. e. cummings

Everyone  suddenly  burst  out  singing;
And I was filled with such delight
As prisoned birds must find in freedom
Winging wildly across the white
Orchards  and  dark  green  fields;  on;  on;
and out of sight.

Everyone's voice was suddenly lifted,
And beauty came like the setting sun.
My heart was shaken with tears, and horror
Drifted away. . . . O, but everyone
Was a bird; and the song was wordless; the
singing will never be done.

Give me the moon at my feet

Put my feet upon the crescent, like a Lord!

O let my ankles be bathed in moonlight, that I may go

sure and moon-shed, cool and bright-footed

towards my goal.

— D. H. Lawrence

Three men came talking up the road
And still "tomorrow" was the word.

The night was clear with the lamp's glitter.
The first man spoke and his voice was bitter:

"Tomorrow like another day
I draw the dole and rust away."

The second one said scared and low,
"Tomorrow I may have to go."

And the two spoke never another word
But drew together and looked at the third.

And the third man said-, "If tomorrow exists,
It's a day of streets like rivers of fists,

"It's the end of crawling, the end of doles,
And men are treated as human souls."

I stood in the doorway and heard these things
As the three came past with the step of kings.

— John Manifold

The skyscrapers stand proud.
They seem to say they have

sought the absolute

and made it their own.
Yet they are blameless, innocent

as dumb steel and the dumber

concrete of their bastions.
"Man made us," they murmur. "We are

proud only as man is proud and we

have no more found the absolute

than has man."

— Carl Sandburg

PREFACE

Through pictures and verse we have presented to you the
moods and emotions of youth in a time of transition. At
Maryville, three seniors have expressed well those things
which we "dimly and dumbly feel." These pages contain
their poetry — in tribute . . . and in gratitude.

REFLECTIONS

The wind in yellow leaves is sighing,

crying that the end
of yellow leaves must come

some day, and they must follow
fall in haunting softness down

brown black boughs, in small
heaps that gather like golden snow

below each trunk and sleep.

— Nelson Miller

No . . .

I cannot ask you to wait . . .
There is a point where love asks too much . . .
Where eyes try too hard to see glow and warmth . .
And other eyes are capable only of dry tears.

No need for the grief or the pain of longing now —
These belong to another story

already told —

Or perhaps add to another play

yet to be performed

I cannot know why my name was not
Posted beside yours in the cast.
All I know

that I am not arrived yet —
here where you are.

Perhaps some late afternoon I shall arrive

And catch you unaware by the living room

Fire

And we will sit down in the twilight of

That room

In the lazy shawl of late-day mist about

The furniture

And talk of the trip so far

and the play.

Then again —

My arrival may well be too late . . .
There may be only the low glowing fire
And the empty couch to welcome me there.

No

I cannot ask you to wait .
I might never come at all.

-Sara Humphries

". . . of Never"
Every once and maybe — there you are.
We smile and touch and part.
For the test of Never

it is that smile
That makes you what you are
— and that touch

what I long to become

— Dave Powell

It is in winter

When the trees sleep

That I miss
The apple blossoms.

OF OUR TIME

There was a facet of glass
that made me wish
I hadn't given glass

but rather wood

or wine or cloth.

Reflecting the hot noon sun

the glaring dish

made me one

with heat and white
and sheets of light.

Now I know a gift that glares,
when a gift of glow
from one who cares

was what was meant,

will not suffice.

Yes, and such a meager way

— a gift at all —

to have to say

that my intent

(of wood or wine or cloth)

was not to soil, decay

or be drunk down

to leave such empty glass,
But rather was a question

"Do you understand?"

— Dave Powell

If

I could hold you now by
my tears
my sighs
my thoughts
my eyes
If
I could but speak one word

a word that would suffice
a word that would impoverish your confusion
a word that I could know as my own
a word that I could offer to you now —

and know the security of its having been spoken
If I could . . .
Yet

even so
I know full well I would not, for

even as
the breath of wind chimes cannot be held in
lavender bottles

for safe keeping
cannot
love be pressed beneath glass

without distortion.

-Sara Humphries

I am brother to dust —

Yea, a small, sad lump of wonder.

On the point of forever

I dance a lingering step with Death.

For the sake of maybe

I walk beside you.

Love me.
I am but brother to dust,
I dance on the point of forever
a lingering step.

— Dave Powell

We built a fawn and silent fire

that everlasting night
And sat by sawdust shores to watch it melt
On borrowed flutes we sighed a lemon tune
That sprouted misty wings to ease its flight
As dreary damp it drifted down

the rivers of the moon.

When you are old and gray and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep .
