MEMORIES

"So when with prayers and vows I had
implored the peoples of the dead, I took the
sheep and cut their throats over the pit, and
forth the dark blood flowed. Then gathered
there spirits from out of Erebus of those now
dead and gone, brides, and unwedded youths,
and worn old men, delicate maids with hearts
but new to sorrow, and many pierced with
brazen spears, men slain in fight, wearing
their blood-stained armor."

The Odyssey, Book XI

Memory is a dim spectre that walks dark
minds, unseen,

Until it etches itself sharply and poetically
there,

By eager taste of remembrance-blood — a
poem in an out-worn text,
an aging photograph, this book, re-
discovered upon the shelf.

And this is your heritage, your immortality:

A friend at the morning window, suddenly
startled by a familiar stance.

O Lost' And by the wind, grieved, Ghost,

come back to me.
mountain-dwelling ghost,
O so briefly parlor visitor.

"Take your mark . . . get set . . ."

These words, plus the sharp sound of
the starter's gun, were historic words in this
year's Foundation sports year as the Lion
swimmers stroked their way to the Kentucky
State High School Championship ... a fit-
ting climax to a sports year of thrills, chills,
and excitement . . . there was the basket-
ball season . . . the rebuilding of a new team
of basketball stalwarts . . . the names of
Billy Evans, Ronald Gibson, Lee Roy Baker
. . . playing their last year as Lion seniors
. . . the season games . . . the district
tournament . . . the loss of Coach Fenn as
the director of Lion teams ... a year of
activity that will be remembered, remem-
bered, and remembered

Berea Sports

NEWS STORY Berea, Ky., June 5— 'Special To The Courierl

O H Gunkler, Athletic Director of Berea College, said today that the
Berea sports year has been one of the best in history. "Perhaps we
have not won as many games as in previous years," he said, "but we
must consider other factors in |udgmg the year as a success. We have
had more men participating, a great number of events, and much inter-
est on the part of the campus as a whole." Gunkler mentioned the
extraordinary interest in the men's intramural program, the K.I AC.
basketball tournament that was held at Berea, and the activities of the
Mountaineer track, tennis, swimming, basketball, baseball

Mr. Gunkler's statement on the preceeding page is undoubtedly correct;

it was a good Mountaineer sports year from the opening whistle of

the basketball season to the final event of the K.I.A.C. track and tennis

meets it was apparent that Bereans were enioying the sports program

there was the traditional Alumni-Varsity tilt, which the Varsity won

42-36 as Coach C. H. Wyatt unwrapped his 1949-50 Mountaineer basketball

team there was the basketball season with its series of losing streaks

and winning spurts the K.I.A.C. tournament at Berea as five member

schools invaded the campus with scads and scads of slightly hysterical fans

the announcement of the final record seven wins and 13

losse s the rank of fourth in the conference Kentucky Wesleyan

winning the tournament Players, coaches, and fans had the perturba-
tion, tumult, commotion and general furore typical of a basketball season

and there were the Mountaineer cheerleaders dressed as the

players in the clean blue and white urging support for the players

it was good to see the tremendous bursts of encouragement the Berea

leaders drew from the fans until the termination of the sports year the

swimming team cross country squad

The Varsity teams were not the only ones in action the men's

intramural program was in full swing Saturday afternoons on the

football field nightly basketball games in Seabury Gym as dormitory

teams endeavored to win for their respective dorms intramural track

table tennis handball

Coaches Wyatt and Fenn a familiar sight to Bereans Gunkler's

bowties tournament manager taking part in a tumbling act

instructing instructors the man who makes the schedules and

keeps his eye on the administrative end of the Athletic Department plus
filling in as coach and teacher Wyatt in a warmup jacket base-
ball togs Fenn directing the swimming team and the aquacade

chorus Wilson Evans piloting the tennis squad

And across the campus Miss Macaulay directing the Women's Depart-
ment, assisted by Miss Caldwell and Miss Reid the women's athletic

names suggest every type of sports activity from handball to bad-
minton physical education requirements Saturday night

games, dances, Monday night swimming sessions, folk festivals, open
house

"Seabury Gym dedicated to the young men of Berea in

hope that they may here train their bodies to be swift and enduring
servants . . . that they may learn to play in generous rivalry and
cooperation . , . . "

And women's sports cannot be overlooked W. A. A.

activities every Saturday .... State Play Day .... basketball ....
badminton .... field hockey .... Swimming .... no one going
through chow line could fail to notice the unique W.A.A. posters
.... an effective reminder that it was time to play ....
