DEDICATION
Mrs. Grimes counseling one of her students.
For being our college "mother" and
nurse, for being so helpful at any hour
that we need her, and for her unending
devotion to the Chowan College family,
we dedicate the 1962 CHOWANOKA
to our Dean of Women, Mrs. Sybil Grimes.
Her daily task of writing out excuses for absences.

Who could forget our wonderful class of 1962? Although we met only a year ago, we have memories
to last a lifetime .... the socials, Wednesday nights at B.B. (?), the fun at the Student Center after supper,
the bull sessions after hours, and most of all, Homecoming! There are also many humorous events that
shall never be forgotten in our minds. Who could ever forget the "Yanks" singing "Dixie" in rat court last
year? And ahh yes, when Pam Norvell wore her evening dress to the cafeteria with a sweatshirt over it.
Maybe she was going to a Chowan social later in the evening. This year the Powder Puff Football Game
was very exciting. Suddenly Henley was seen being carried out onto the football field. The "football hero"
had finally decided to play. Can you remember the chapel program when Baganakis led the funeral march
in remembrance of good ole Wesley? Yes, we as Sophomores hate to leave Chowan, but we look forward
to the future for a new horizon.

Professor Hoback, a Tennessean, joined
the Chowan College Department of Science
in 1960. Although his stay was short, he
gained the admiration of students, col-

The Chowan Braves End a Glorious Season With an 8 and 1 Record.
The Chowan student body has every right to be proud of their Chowan Braves. The team ended their
season with an 8 and 1 record giving them a consideration for the Junior College Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Cali-
fornia. Cameron Junior College of Lawton, Oklahoma won the bid to the bowl with a 10 and 0 record.
All the players on the starting defensive and offensive teams were outstanding. On offense there was
Ken Blanchard, Robert "Rah Rah" Smith, Martin Forbes, Don Redford, and Wallace Herring. Defensively James
Boseman, Gerald Jones, Sidney Weaver, Lew Massey, and Charlie Stevens were constant standouts.
The offensive team which had a very strong bench gained 1795 yards rushing and scored 232 points in their
9 games. On the reverse side the defensive team was just as impressive holding their opponents to only 26
points.
ThisChowanfootballteam will go into the records as one of the best teams ever to be produced at Chowan
College.

season with a 6-0 victory over always tough Gardner
Webb. The lone score came on a Fourth quarter run
by Ken Blanchard which covered 30 yds.

Charles Mason, a freshman from Crew, Va., led the Braves to their
second win of the season. He scored all three touchdowns for the Chowan
eleven. His first tally came on a six-yard end run in the second quarter.
In the third quarter Mason hit pay-dirt with a ten- yard romp and in the
fourth quarter he returned a Wingate punt 40 yards for his final score.
Defensively Wallace Collins was superb. Wallace also scored with
an extra point kick after Mason's first touchdown run.
Are you sure Ma Beaman said no seconds?"

'I give up, who's got the ball?"
Chowan Enjoys Homecoming with a 34-0 Victory.
On November 4th before 3000 fans Chowan marked up a seventh win against Wesley
College. This win topped off Homecoming very nicely with a score of 34-0. Ken
Blanchard blazed the trial for the Braves with three touchdowns, two of which were in
the first quarter. Don Redford sparkled brilliantly with two touchdown passes, one to
Blanchard and the other to Jim Trione. Jackie Brinkley provided the only score in the
second half with a four yard plunge through the center.
Chowan Sinks the Shipbuilders
25-0
Chowan, ranked seventh in the Nation for Junior
Colleges, proves their ranking by beating previously unde-
feated Apprentice School.
Half-back, Edgar (Bobby) Jones, shined for the Braves
on offense. He twisted his way for 17 yards for a first
quarter score and in the final quarter Emmett Williams
hit Bobby with a 49- yard touchdown pass.
The second half was marked with penalties against
both teams and at one period of the third quarter, the
shipbuilders walked off the field.
Braves Smash The Spiders
27-6
Rebounding from their 6-3 defeat at the hands of
Ferrum Jr. College the Braves overpowered the Richmond
Fresh., 27-6.
The Baby Spiders drew first blood on a 44- yard run by
Ken Stout who went over right tackle.
The Braves strike back with a 100-yard kickoff return
by Pete Brittian who took a hand-off from Bobby Jones.
John Dollar kicked the extra point. This was one of three
which he kicked during the game.
Standouts on the strong Chowan defense were Lew
Massey and James Boseman.
Braves Scalp the Indians 30-7
Chowan'schancefortheJuniorCoUegeRose Bowl was strength-
ened when the Braves defeated William and Mary 30-7 Don Red-
ford, quarter backing for the Braves, threw two touchdown passes,
hitting Robert (Rah Rah) Smith in the second quarter and Dick
Padgett in the third quarter. The Indians opened with their only
score several plays after the kick-off when Bill Segan passed to
halfback Harry Ronsh for a 60 yard touchdown.

Ferrum Slips By Chowan
The Ferrum Panthers ended Chowan's 10-Game winning
streak, including two ties, on a rain-soaked field at South
Hill, Va.
During the first quarter both teams were held scoreless.
In the second quarter behind the running of Bobby Jones and
Ken Blanchard, the Braves moved the ball to the Panther's
10. Unable to move the ball against the Ferrum defense, the
Braves called on John Dollar who kicked a 20- yard field goaL
Late in the same quarter the Panthers began a drive which
ended with a 2- yard pass for the score.
At the end of the season this game was looked upon as the
one which kept the Braves from the Little Rose Bowl.

BRAVES IN BASKETBALL
The Chowan Braves had a mediocre season with 9 wins and 15 losses. Although the
record wasn't an enviable one, the Braves along with the Student Body showed much spirit
throughout the season. Home games, especially towards the end of the season, were very
impressive while away games proved to disastrous. In the last two home games the
Chowan Five tallied 202 points; 100 in the first game against Bluefield and 102 against
Charlotte.
The two leading scorers for the Braves were Fred Lamb and William Horton. Both
of these boys also proved to be very impressive on all-around ability. Dell Smith, Jimmy
Morgan, and Hank Marriott were the big men under the boards along with Tom Redman
who replaced Marriott late in the season because of Marriott's illness. Don Redford and
Melvin Bowles added the necessary balance to the team.
