Subject: An old Standby
Bigg's first edition was 1886, his second in 1913, and there was a 1968 reprint incorporating his notes. Bigg looks at Philo of Alexandria, Clement of Alexandria, and Origen (Alexandria and Caesarea). As such, he has a lot of good material, even if it is a bit out of date. Then Bigg looks at what he calls "enlightened paganism", by which he means pagan philosophers. I think his analysis of Philostratus, Porphyry, etc. is insightful. He also shows the influence Judaism and Christianity were having upon the paganism that was attacking them. However, I think that Bigg's enlightened paganism was not held by the common people. This is a good book, although it should be read in conjunction with a more recent analysis of Alexandrian thought.
