America, in Cafe of a War with Spain^ may require the
Rcgulir Forces in this Province to be witiidrawn, and Ca^
Tjada, for a Time, be left to iier own Defence, common ."
Prudence demands, th«t all neceflary Meafures be taken '
to meet that Event.

The Strength and Exertions of the Inhabitants arc the Natural Prote«5lion of
every Country, and when properly arranged as' Militia cannot fail to become its'
chief and moft permanent Support.

His Excellency the Governor therefore recommehds to the different
Commandants and Officers of the Militia to take all luitable Opportunities of
impreffine the Minds of the People with the Neceluty of Self Defence, as an
indifpenfible Duty, intimately connefted with the prefervation of their Lives
and Property.

They will alfo confider of the proper Means for putting tlie Militia under
their Command in the mod refpeAable Condition, that they may not only be .
able to defend themfclves and the Province againft all deluUory or piratical
Attacks, in the yVblence of the Regular Troops, but alfo, fliould tiic Safety of
the Country render it necefTary, tliat Competent Detachments from their
Numbers may be prepared to join, and adt with, the Regular Forces. For
this Purpofe it may be advifeable to colled: for a limited Time from every Com-
pany a proportion of the young Men, that they may be the more eafily train-
ed up and exercifed in the Ule of Arms, and be more ready to protcfl thi-ir
Fellow Citizens from Infult and Interruption in their pcacrf;il Occupations.
The Colonels and Field OlHcers of the leveral Diftriifls or Divifions of the Mi-
litii are therefore requefted to confult together, as far as Convenience may
permit, and djgefl: tlie proper Arrangements for carrying this Meafure into Exe-
cution, whenever it lliall be found expedient, trani'mitting the Refuk of their
Deliberations fcveraiy from each Diflrift to the Adjutant General for His Ex-
cellency's Information.

These Detachments, when collected and embodied to ferve fir a limited
Time not exceeding Two Years, will for their greater Eafe and Encouragement
receive Pay, Provifions, Arms, and Quarters, in the fame Manner as His Ma-
jefty's marchnj Regiments in this Province, with Cloaihing of equal Value,
or a Compenfation in lieu thereof.

The Commandants of the feveral Battalions of Militia weft of Point au
Baudit, are to tranfmit the Reports for their refpedive Diftrids to Sir JoHrf
Johnson Baronet, who will forward the fame to Head Quarters.

certain Noiiibredejeunes Gens a proportion d; chaque Compagnie, afin de les
dilcipliner plus facilement et de les exerccr au Maniement des Armes, pour
qu'ils foient toujours prets a fc porter au bcfoin et a proteger leurs concitoytns
dans kurs paifibles occupations.

Les Colonels et Officicrs de I'Etat Major des difr-'rents Diftrifts ou Divifions
de la Milice font done requis de fe confuher les un les autres autant quils Ic
pourront convenablement, pour rcdiger les mefures qu'ils auront prifes relativc-
ment au Projet ci-deflus lorfqu'il feratrouvc expedient d'en venir a I'execution,
pour ce ils tranfmettront le Relultat de leurs Deliberations a 1' Adjutant Gene-
ral pour que celui-ci en informe fon Excellence.

Au refte on promct a ces Detacliemens, qui feront leves et incorpores pour
fervir une efpace de Tems, que ce tems n'exccdtra pas deux Annecs, <juili
recevront pour leur foulagement ec encouragement la paic, les Provifions, les
Armes ct les Qiiartiers de logement de la meine Maniere que les rejoivcnt les
Regiments de fa Majefte dans cette Province, deplus un Equipenient de Valcur
t'gale, ou au lieu d'icelui une jufte Compenfaiion.

Les Commandans des differents Bataillons de Milice a I'Oueftde la Pointe au
Baudct tranfmettront les Rapports de leurs DillridsaSir John Johnso.m Baronet,
qui les acheminera au C;^artier General.
