Opening Comments
From complacency
to chaos
o
n the morning of September 11, students and faculty at Southern crowded around
televisions all across campus. In disbelief we sat glued to the news as we watched two
of the world's most recognizable buildings crumble to the ground. We watched flames rip
violently through a gaping hole in the Pentagon, and only minutes later, we saw reports
of a fourth hijacked plane crashing into a deserted field in rural Pennsylvania. For people
all around the country, it was a moment we will never forget, rivaled only by the surprise
attack on Pearl Harbor and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
As 1 watched the firemen and rescue workers searching through the mountainous pile
of rubble, scouring for signs of life, my heart cried out for the families of those lost.
Only a few years separated from the majority of students on campus, I'll be the first to
admit that my generation has taken for granted the freedoms for which our forefathers
fought and died. And on September 11, the freedoms our nation enjoys were attacked
and maligned.
As surreal as the events of September 1 1 were, the tragedy was a bitter reality to the
families of thousands who lost their lives.
It's at a time like this, when reality slaps us in the face, that each of us is forced re-
evaluate our own lives. Parents spend more time with their children and less time at
work. National leaders put politics aside and reach beyond the partisanship that usually
divides the right from the left. Men and women from all walks of life break down pre-
existing harriers and join hands in a cause called patriotism.
On September 1 1 , a nation that nine months prior had stood so harshly divided over
a presidential election controversy instantly united and became stronger than ever. A
long-lost patriotic fervor swept across the land and into the hearts of millions who salute
the Stars and Stripes.
Over the next several weeks we heard stories of hope and inspiration. In the midst of
tragedy, we heard tales of triumph — stories of heroes — men and women who gave their
lives so that others could live.
As these stories of individual heroism cause our national pride to swell, each of us
must ask ourselves how we will be affected. Will the events of September 1 1 be nothing
more than an added delay at the airport? Or will they be a lesson that life is fragile and
the reason we're on this earth is far greater than life itself? Many have found assurance in
the fact that even through all the chaos, God was there.
If your life is full of uncertainty, know that Jesus Christ is there. If doubts crowd your
mind, know that you are not alone.
In Romans 8:28-29 Paul writes, "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nei-
ther angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither
height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the
love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (NIV).
When your life is turned from complacency to chaos, take comfort in the fact that the
same Jesus who calmed the storm-tossed sea is riding with you through the storms of life.
Rest assured that the same Jesus who commanded Peter to walk on water will guide you
on your way.
According to Joel 3:16, "the Lord will be a refuge for His people."
May the Lord be your refuge in these times of uncertainty.

Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of Christ and to reflect
on the blessings we enjoy. But is it possible to share the joy of
Christmas with children on the other side of the world?
Jane Adkins had never heard of Operation
Christmas Child when she read about the
campaign 1 1 months ago. She eagerly
called Southern to learn more about the
shoe box collection project.
Armed with brochures, posters and a
video, Jane presented the project to the
small Floral Crest elementary school and
church in Bryant, Alabama. The students
and church members rallied around the
idea, purchasing toys, filling shoe boxes
and wrapping them with Christmas paper.
On November 1 6, Jane dropped off 1 1 5
toy-filled shoe boxes at Southern. Several
weeks later the boxes were flown around
the world and distributed as Christmas
presents to unfortunate children in war-
torn and poverty-stricken countries.
Thanks to thousands ot volunteers
around the world, including students, fac-
ulty and friends of Southern, millions of
children were able to experience the joy of
Christmas, perhaps for the first time.
This is Southern's second
year of participation in
Operation Christmas
Child. The project was
started in 1993 by
Franklin Graham and
Samaritan's Purse, a
non-denominational
Christian relief organiza
tion. Last year, more
than 4 million shoe
boxes were distributed worldwide.
This year Southern collected nearly 600
boxes while hundreds of students enthusi-
astically involved themselves in the project.
"Operation Christmas Child gave me the
opportunity to feel 1 was helping in a direct
way," said Catherine Wilson, sophomore.
"With this project, you're not just donating
money for someone else to use in helping
children — you're doing it yourself"
Shoe boxes were distributed to children
in more than 80 countries. Some boxes
were shipped by boat or plane, while others
were on the backs of horses and donkeys.
Southern received help from several
area churches. "Each year we look forward
to participating in the project," said Arnold
Schnell, pastor of Bowman Hills Church in
Cleveland, Tennessee. "Operation Christ-
mas Child provides us with the opportunity
to share the joy of Christmas and ultimately
spread the good news of salvation." Bowman
Hills Church, as well as the elementary
school, has been an active supporter of the
project for several years.
Mike Fulbright, pastor of young adult
ministries at CoUegedale Church, supports
the project. "1 think we subconsciously
assume that everyone else on this planet
lives lite as comfortably as we do,"
Fulbright said. "But if we stop for a mo-
ment and think it through, we're pretty
fortunate. Operation Christmas Child
gives us the opportunity to 'stop and think
it through,' and objectively appreciate
what we have. At the same time, it pro-
vides us with the opportunity to make a
memorable Christmas for a child who isn't
as fortunate."
There was a dramatic increase in
Southern's student participation between
this year and last. "We're really excited
about the growing interest in the project,"
said Kari Shultz, director of student ser-
vices. "It's a great chance for the students
and the community to work together to
benefit children around the world." South-
em received boxes from as far away as
Texas, Maryland, Florida and California.

Library Angels
Southern helps expand libraries across the nation
Stocking the libraries of more than 175
Seventh-day Adventist elementary
schools and academies is not an easy task.
But for Katye Hunt and her staff at ANGEL
(Adventist Network of General Education
Libraries), it's all in a day's work.
Hundreds of students on campus use the
McKee Library each day as a quiet place to
study and do research. However, many are
unaware ot the constant activity that takes
place downstairs. Located in the basement
of Southern's McKee Library, ANGEL is
one of the best-kept secrets on campus.
ANGEL's small staff serves libraries nation-
wide as they purchase, catalog, record, and
process books. Hunt estimates that since
the program's inception, ANGEL has pro-
cessed more than 495,000 books.
But the story of how ANGEL started is
one of humble beginnings. In 1981, Jim
Epperson, then superintendent of education
for the Georgia-Cumberland Conference,
asked the McKee Library staff to visit the
libraries of conference schools on Sundays
for marathon cataloging sessions. What Peg
Bennett, Charles Davis, Loranne Grace
and the late Marion Linderman discovered
were not only library collections signifi-
cantly lacking in ideal titles, but the exist-
ence of many inappropriate books as well.
The problem wasn't the fault of any one
individual. The condition stemmed from
the lack ot time dedicated to organizing
and maintaining schools' educational li-
braries.
In the 20 years since ANGEL began,
many positive changes have occurred.
What started as a program designed to
organize the educational libraries in just
one conference has evolved into a book
ordering, processing and shipping center
that serves Adventist elementary schools
and academies across the country.
How ANGEL works
Hunt serves as director of ANGEL. She
is a full-time library professional, holding a
master's degree from an accredited school
of library and information science. Her
staff consists of a supervisor and a handful
of part-time student employees.
"We really enjoy what we do," says Hunt.
And her student workers agree. "I go to
work and enjoy being there," says Susan
Lucas, A.S. nursing major who has worked
at ANGEL for five years. "But more than
that, ANGEL is like a family."
Schools who wish to participate in the
program contact their conference educa-
tion superintendent. The name of the
school is sent to ANGEL, and after con-
sulting with the school, reference material
and titles are ordered to create a well-
rounded library.
Teachers may request specific titles or
subject areas or they can rely on the staff at
ANGEL to select titles for them.
Throughout the year many sales repre-
sentatives visit ANGEL to promote new
titles. One of the staffs responsibilities is
to preview all materials for content. This
often involves reading a book from cover
to cover and making a judgement call. "1
find great satisfaction in providing quality
reading material to the schools," says
Hunt.
Books that are deemed inappropriate
because of ideals that fall short of
Adventist standards are flagged. "Some-
times it is challenging because we have our
standards and each school has a different
set of standards," Hunt says. "But in work-
ing together we can always find a solu-
tion."
Every summer. Hunt travels to Michi-
gan to meet with a supplier. There she
purchases books at up to 80 percent off the
cover price, based on the large volume of
her order. Volume discounts are then
passed along to the schools.
After Hunt returns, shipments of books
begin to arrive. The workers process and
catalog the books, attach spine labels and
affix checkout cards. This service is built in
to the fee that the individual schools are
charged for the books, which is based on
ByGarrenW.Nudd
the school's student enrollment.
Another benefit of ANGEL is that they
keep catalog records of the libraries of each
school that participates. Several years ago
frozen pipes destroyed a library in Tallahas-
see, Florida, during Christmas vacation.
Hunt recalls us-
ing ANGEL's
records to pro-
vide informa-
tion for
insurance
claims and also
to duplicate the
library's card
catalog.
One of the
best aspects of
ANGEL is that
it is not a
profit-making entity. ANGEL's financial
support comes from the conferences and
the union. But Southern Adventist Uni-
versity is one of
the program's
biggest support-
ers. Through
ANGEL,
Southern works
to improve K- 1 2
education in
the North
American Divi-
sion. By provid-
ing ANGEL
adequate office
and work-space
facilities. Southern absorbs the overhead
that would otherwise be added to the price
of books.
"Our purpose at ANGEL is to provide a
much-needed service to Adventist schools
who might not have librarians," says Hunt.
"And hopefully, together we're building
better libraries for our young people."

Remembering September I 1 , 200 1
Students and connnnunity nneet for prayer service
On the evening of September 1 1 , a day
on campus which was weighted with grief
and shock, Southern students and members
of the Collegedale community filled the
CoUegedale Seventh-day Adventist
Church for a service of prayer and remem-
brance.
"Because ot this morning's events, our
lives will never be the same," said univer-
sity president Gordon Bietz as he addressed
the congregation. Overcome with emotion,
Bietz compared the attacks to the assassi-
nation of President John F. Kennedy and
to the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
Ken Rogers, university chaplain led the
congregation in song service, singing
hymns of strength and hope and sharing
the stories behind the writing of each
hymn. Southern's I Canton sang, "Here I
am. Lord," a song about committing to
service. George Babcock, academic dean,
and several others prayed from the front for
the victims as well as the attackers.
The ser\'ice was brought to a close with
students and commimity members on their
knees praying in groups of two or three.
Students react to the terrorist attacks
In the wake of the terrorist attacks stu-
dents on campus responded with resolve
and patriotism. Hundreds of students gath-
ered for a September 1 1 prayer service in
the Collegedale Church. Members of the
Southern Adventist University's Christian
Veterans Association stationed themselves
on the K. R. Davis Promenade as they
collected donations for the New York Re-
lief Fund and distributed flags to students
as they passed by.
In the spirit of patriotism, flags were
attached to automobiles, many
on antennas and others lodged
in windows.
"Walking around Southern
the week after the attacks made
me feel proud to be an American,"
said Kyle Allen, freshman theol-
ogy major. "Flags were hung in
the dorm lobbies, mounted on
car antennas, attached to back-
packs, and taped on doors all
down the dorm hallways."
Soutliern observes National Day of Prayer
Joining others around the nation in re-
membering the victims of the heinous
terrorist attacks on Washington D.C. and
New York City, Southern's students, fac-
ulty and staff gathered around the flagpole
on September 14 for several moments of
silence and prayer. The day was declared a
National Day of Prayer by President
George W. Bush.
Standing in front of Wright Hall below
a half-mast United States Flag, university
president Gordon Bietz made some open-
ing remarks and Brad Hyden, chaplain of
Southern's Christian Veterans Association,
followed by reading Psalms 33 (a portion of
which follows).
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people he chose for his inheritance.
From heaven t/u; Lord looks down and sees
all rrmnldnd; from his duielling place he watches
all who live on earth — he who forms the hearts of
aH, who corxstders everything they do.
No king is saved by the size of
his army; no warrior escapes by his
great strength. A horse is a vain
hope for deliverance; despite ali its
great strength it cannot save.
But t/ie eyes of the Lord are on
those who fear him, on those whose
hope is in his unfailing love, to
deliver them from death and keep
them alive in famine.
We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help
and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we
trust in his holy name.
May your unfailing love rest upon us , O
Lord, even as we put our hope in you.
Muslim-Christian relations panel held on campus
On October 2, Southern hosted a panel
discussion on Muslim-Christian relations in
a time of crisis. The discussion was moder-
ated by Jim Catan:aro, president of Chatta-
nooga State Technical Community College,
and aired on their local television station.
Those participating in the panel were
Jerald Whitehouse, Seventh-day Adventist
General Conference Director of Muslim-
Adventist Relations; Rabia Kafozi, Spokes-
person for Muslims in Chattanooga; and
Ganoune Diop, Professor of Religion at
Southern.
"The result of the Muslim-Christian
Relations In a Time of Crisis meeting was
that many students had their eyes opened
to the fact that Muslims are basically a
peace-loving people, and that there is
much ill-founded and incorrect stereotyp-
ing on the part of both Muslims and Chris-
tians," said George Babcock, vice president
for academic administration.
Since September 11, the Adventist-
Muslim Relations Club at Southern has
experienced a great increase in activity.
The purpose of the club is to reach out
to other Seventh-day Adventist people
and introduce them to Muslims and the
religion of Islam. The club also reaches out
to Muslims and strives to create a friendly
loving environment, building bridges be-
tween the two communities.
In only their second year of existence,
the club has increased their visits to local
Muslim friends. More churches are also
requesting the "Afraid of Muslims?" semi-
nar that the club offers. Community inter-
est in the club has increased significantly
since the terrorist attacks.
Senator FredThompson visits Southern
In response to the terrorist attacks, Ten-
nessee Senator Fred Thompson, spoke in
Southern's lies P.E. Center to an estimated
crowd of 1,500 on Monday, September 17.
It was his first public address since the
tragedy of September 1 1 .
"We've been stunned by an unprec-
edented attack on our own soil," said Th-
ompson, who is also chairman of the
Senate Committee on Governmental Af-
fairs. "It was not on some battleship in a far
away place."
Thompson said that America had been
reminded of the face of evil and promised
that the attackers would face total devasta-
tion.
Thompson stressed that the United
States does not face a normal enemy. "We
are at war with fanatics," he said. "There
will be no front to this war, it will be ev-
erywhere."
The Senator
praised passengers
of United Flight 93
which crashed in
Pennsylvania when
a civilian-led upris-
ing caused the flight
to crash before it
reached its target,
which some have
speculated was in
Washington. That
heroism, Thompson
said, might have saved his life.
"Young people may ask, 'Why
is this happening to the United
States?'" Thompson said. He
responded that the American
ideal of freedom for all people
goes against thousands of years of
human history.

Gym-Masters participate in NYC parade
Less than one month after the terrorist
attacks, the 57-member Gym-Masters team
made the trip to New York City to partici-
pate in the annual Columbus Day Parade
on October 8.
"It was made clear to us that when
people go through pain, even those you
don't know, it is important to be there to
support them," said Rick Schwarz, Gym-
Masters coach.
More than 100,000 people attended the
Columbus Day Parade which was also
broadcast on WNBC, New York.
"God gave us the opportunity to use
our gift of acrobatics to make others feel
better — to forget for just a moment about
their pain," Schwan said.
"If 1 was to sum up the trip in a word, it
would be 'unified,'" Schwarz said. "We were
unified with the people of New York, uni-
fied with each other, and unified with God."

Student involvement in Revival Prayer
Groups has reached an all-time high. At
last count, nearly 80 individuals had vol-
unteered as prayer group leaders in this stu
dent-initiative spiritual emphasis program.
The program is designed to encourage
daily student prayer by promotmg and
facilitating small groups. With at least one
prayer group per hour, students strive to
"pray without ceasing" on campus.
Begun three years ago by Scott Manley
and other dedicated students, the program
has grown tremendously since its begin-
ning. "During the first few years, participa-
tion fluctuated," says Maria Samaan, prayer
group leader. "It was difficult to continue
the program from year to year with the
same participants."
This year, Maria Samaan, Laramie Bar-
ber, Marius Asaftei and other students
have revived the Revival Prayer Groups
with encouraging results. In a student wor-

"We now have groups from 6;30 a.m. to

them at different times."

Southern experiences its highest enrollment
The announcement that everyone had
been waiting to hear came just days after
the close of registtation. The records office
announced that fall 2001 undergraduate
enrollment is 2,098 students, eclipsing the
university's previous enrollment record by
seven, which was set in 1980.
"We are thrilled that we're experiencing
such significant growth in the number of
students that wish to partake of the unique
educational experience that we provide at
Southern Adventist University," said Gor-
don Bietz, university president.
Many on campus are excited about the
news. "We're experiencing the highest
enrollment in the 110-year history of the
school," said Victor Czerkasij, director of
admissions. "God is certainly blessing us."
In addition to its extensive undergradu-
ate program, Southern has many graduate-
level students as well. The graduate
enrollment numbers, however, are not
included in the 2,098 figure.
More good news for Southern faculty,
staff and students is the improved housing
situation. Concerns over housing shortages
in recent years led to the construction of
Southern Village, a student apartment
complex. Though residence halls are full
this year, there isn't the crucial demand on
housing that Southern experienced at this
time last year when enrollment increased
by a dramatic 12 percent. More plans are
in the making for additions to both the
men's and women's dorms to help meet
expected housing demand in the future.

compete for sponsor-
ships, and visit with
current and future
Southern students.
One of the most
beneficial programs
of the weekend was
Career ConneXions.
12 • SUMMER 2001
Students were encouraged to select three
Career ConneXions choices prior to their
visit. Each student's selections were incor-
porated into their individualized schedules,
which allotted time
for students to attend
45-minute presenta-
tions on their top
three career choices.
"ConneXions was
one of the most use-
ful programs I've ever
been involved with,"
said Chadd Watkins,
senior physical edu-
cation major who
helped with the program. "I wish they had
something like that when I was in academy."
On Monday afternoon students partici-
pated in the Southern Games. Each team
was composed of students from a variety of
academies. Teams toured the campus com-
bining their efforts to compete in games
such as College Tug-of-War, Southern
Trivia, Catalog Toss, Frisbee Golf,
Walleyball, Senior Car Push, and more.
Money for class trips was awarded to
academies whose seniors participated in every
event at a 90 percent participation level.
The weekend concluded with a concert
by Christian recording artist Andrew
Peterson.
University hosts schoiarship/avsrard brunch
The advancement office at Southern
Adventist University recently hosted its
first Scholarship/ A ward Brunch. As part of
Alumni Weekend, the event offered stu-
dent scholarship recipients the chance to
get acquainted with donors and honorees.
This was the first such event in what will
become a tradition at Southern.
The program gave donors, faculty and
students the opportunity to present their
thoughts and thanks regarding financial
aid at Southern.
Expressing gratitude to the many do-
nors, Lynn Caldwell, associate professor ot
journalism and communication, said, "The
worst day at work is when a young student
walks out of my office and does not come
hack. You make it possible tor many stu-
dents to remain at Southern."
Many donors said that they give simply
because they had been helped when they
were students. "You have to give away
some of what you get," said Wilma
McClarty, chair of the English department.
Others donate in remembrance of a loved
one or to honor a favorite teacher from
years ago.
Endowments, scholarships, and private
funding are an important part
of the financial package at
Southern. With roughly $20
million in endowment invest-
ments, the annual proceeds
feed many scholarships.
The brunch was intended
to thank the generosity of
alumni and other donors.
"We are grateful tor the nu-
merous families and individu-
als who have established
scholarships with Southern
Adventist University
throughout the years," said
David Burghart, vice presi-
dent for advancement. "Hundreds ot young
people have benefited from the gifts of
those that believe in Christian education
and realize its value."
In addition to giving appreciation to
past donors, this brunch event was planned
to encourage future participation in this
form of giving. Interested donors are en-
couraged to establish a named endowed
scholarship, loan or award by contacting
the university's advancement office at
423.238.2829.
Fundraising nearly complete for the renovation
of university's historic Lynn Wood Hall
The fundraising campaign for the renova-
tion of Lynn Wood Hall is nearing comple-
tion. Current donations total roughly
$183,000 and are approaching the goal of
$200,000. In addition, every dollar re-
ceived will be matched by a challenge
grant the university has received. Once
complete, the fundraising will have gar-
nered $400,000 for the renovation project.
Lynn Wood Hall is scheduled to be re-
stored as a fully functioning campus facility.
While the building houses the Heritage
Museum, the advancement and alumni of-
fice and the campus safety department, its
spacious third floor is unused and needs ex-
tensive renovations and an elevator. Plans
call for the Testing and Counseling Center,
the Center for Learning Success and a large
conference room to occupy the top floor,
providing much needed student services.
The Lynn Wood Hall renovation will
be a great benefit to the university. "The
space that will be made available on the
upper floor of Lynn Wood Hall will allow
us to bring together two important pro-
grams that are focused on meeting student
needs outside the classroom," said David
Burghart, vice president for advancement.
"The Center for Learning Success and the
Testing and Counseling Center will
strengthen their programs as they work
side by side."
Since 1924, Lynn Wood Hall has been
a campus landmark. But by 1986, it had
become expensive to heat and maintain,
and the board decided to raze the building.
Alumni balked at the plans to demolish
the last surviving classroom from
Southern's junior college days. The board
agreed to give the Alumni Association
time to come up with a plan for renovating
the building, a cost estimate, and a fund-
raising strategy. At the May 1987 board
meeting, a plan was presented and terms
stated. By July 31 the terms were met,
Lynn Wood Hall was saved and renovation
began.
By the time the renovation of the main
floor was completed during the 1989-90
school year, the Alumni Association and
the Committee of 100 had spent over
$400,000. The alumni's Heritage Museum
was then moved from J. Mabel Wood Hall
to much more spacious quarters in the
south end of Lynn Wood Hall.
"The new space will provide students
with a quiet environment away from the
distractions of daily activities and offer a
good place to take tests and get personal-
ized attention," said Burghart.

Golf Classic raises $ I 4,000 to benefit Southern
The 2001 and more than 20 sponsors, the touma-
Southem ment was a huge success.
Adventist "Our goal is to make the tournament

participants were randomly selected to each receive
$1,000. Five different departments will be
chosen next year. The remaining money
was donated to the endowment fund,
which makes education at Southern pos-
sible through scholarships.

Drug and alcohol avv^areness emphasized
During Drug and Alcohol Awareness
Week, November 12-15, students at
Southern Adventist University were re-
minded of the importance of being drug
and alcohol-free.
Sponsored by the Center for Learning
Success, the w-eek's programs consisted of
activities, meetings, guest speakers and
informational videos.
Robert Tave, freshman religion major,
opened the week's program with an inspi-
rational and thought-provoking worship
service. Tave shared his personal testimony
and experiences regarding drugs and alco-
hol and the effects the
substances have on
individuals, families
and society.
Simulation goggles
and an information
video were presented
to students the next
day. Watching and
simulating intoxicated
behavior was a power-
ful reminder of the
dangers of alcohol.
Leo Booth, interna-
tionally recognized
speaker, Episcopalian
minister, and recover-
ing alcoholic, spoke to
students at convoca-
tion on Thursday.
Emphasizing "10 in-
sights into creative
living," Booth also
presented a more de-
tailed workshop later
that day, which con-
cluded the events of
the week.
Wittenberg named to international committee
Merlin Wittenberg, director ot educa-
tional technology serv-ices, was recently
nominated by the Learning Resource Net-
work (LERN) to its international faculty.
This nomination came shortly after his
completion of LERN's Certified Program
Planner (CPP) course in October 2001.
"I've been
working on it
for about a
year," said
Wittenberg.
"To get this
certification,
I took manda-
tory online
core courses in teaching online, learning
online, and designing online courses. 1 also
took courses in digital photography,
Photoshop, and more."
LERN is an international education
association and the leading provider of on-
line courses for faculty in higher education.
Its faculty' committee is composed of a
select group of 10 teachers from colleges
and universities in the United States,
Canada, Australia, Great Britain, Slovenia
and Russia. The committee advises LERN
on building its curriculum of online courses
and professional development for faculty in
the area of online learning and teaching.
In addition to ser\ing on the interna-
tional faculty committee, Wittenberg has
also received the Certified Program Plan-
ner (CPP) designation with a specialty in
online learning.
In November, Wittenberg was honored
at LERN's international convention in San
Francisco as one of the first to receive this
certification, and doing so with honors.
"This certification adds great credibility
to our online programs in the area of train-
ing, support and course development," says
Wittenberg. "Because it's a new technol-
ogy, the programs at universities where you
can get a degreed program online are
changing. 1 felt that this was an excellent,
practical program."

Financial
Piannin
From a Christian World View
It seems no one has enough money
these days. And even for those who
invest for the future, the portfoHo
seems to dwindle. Many who planned to
retire early are now adjusting their think-
ing to work more years. How should we
approach financial management in these
unsettled times? Rather than attempt to
give specific investment advice I will stick
to proven principles that have been used
over the years by successful people.
There are three common approaches to
money management by families today. The
first group has no plan, and unfortunately
this is the largest group. TTiey spend every-
thing they make no matter how much it is
and even leverage their future by going
into debt. Their plan is one of sur\'ival and
their budget consists of paying which ever
debt squeaks the loudest. Because this
group can barely keep their heads above
Columns • 15
water they have very httle to contribute to
church or charity and almost nothing to
help others who are less fortunate.
A second group are those who have a
plan and work hard to achieve it. They
frequently have started a "retirement"
account in their twenties and plan to be
millionaires someday — the sooner the
better. Their focus is on accumulation, the
compounding of interest and their invest-
ment portfolio. They seek financial secu-
rity. These people make only token
contributions to church and charity and
have very little interest in helping others
"who could have plenty themselves if they
would work as hard as 1 do."
The third category of managers are
those who seek to understand and follow
the Biblical principles of money manage-
ment. They, too, are hard workers, have a
plan, and are good managers. Their
uniqueness lies in their world view. They
realize that as Christians they are pilgrims,
strangers, and aliens on this earth and that
heaven is their real home. They look at life
in the perspective ot eternity and focus on
investments that will last forever. They are
realists and they sense that in a very real
way their lifetimes here are like a vapor —
here today and gone tomorrow. To them
life is like a dot or period. It's that short in
the light of eternity. But from that dot
they see a line stretching out that has no
end. That line is eternity. And so they
make a very pragmatic decision about this
information. They choose simply to focus
their attention on the line and not the dot.
With this perspective in mind Jesus
gave the following investment counsel:
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on
earth, where moth and rust destroy and
where thieves break in and steal; but lay up
for yourselves treasures in heaven, where
neither moth nor rust destroys and where
thieves do not break in and steal" (Mat-
thew 6: 19,20). This is not basically a right
or wrong thing. It is a matter of wisdom —
doing the smart thing — given the informa-
tion.
As Christian believers, we have "inside"
knowledge of an eventual upheaval — a
worldwide social and economic change — a
catastrophe — the ultimate dive in the
economy. Everything in this world is going
to bum up (2 Peter 3:10). That burning
will reduce earthly value considerably!
That knowledge should radically affect
our investment strategy and our manage-
ment style.
It is very significant that following the
Christian world view an invest-
ment strategy is not
just a plan
for the
future, but
it can posi-
tively affect
our financial
health in the
here and now.
It will certainly
lower the stress
level in the family
and also contribute
to family well-being
and stability.
The basic
Biblical principles
Let's make it simple. A mere seven
basic principles outline the financial
counsel in the Bible. I'll review them
briefly and then we will apply them to
our financial management where we
work and live.
1. Recognize that God is the Owner
of everything. (Psalm 24:1; 50:12;
1 Chronicles 29:13,14). God has this
unique position because of creation and
redemption.
2. Because of God's ownership I am
a manager or steward of His goods.
(1 Timothy 6:7; Matthew 25:14;
1 Corinthians 4:1,2). God allows me to
use what 1 need for the management of
my family and then to use the surplus to
help others and advance His cause. He
also tells us that investing in the last two
areas stores up treasure in heaven. He
told this to the rich young ruler and a
very unique principle is communicated.
We know that we can take nothing with
us when we leave this world; but we can
send it on ahead. We must realize that we
are not smart enough to manage on our
own and must seek God's help in this
area (Proverbs 3:5, 6).
3. Our purpose in life is to glorify
God. (1 Corinthians 10:31; Matthew
5:16). John the Baptist was "great in the
sight of the Lord" not because of his
earthly wealth or tame but rather be-
cause of his commitment to his heav-
enly calling. Each of us also has a
place designed by God where we
are to work for Him. (See Christ's
Object Lessons, p. 327).
4. Prosperity is having what
you need when you need it.
(Philippians 4:19). God has
promised to go with us wher-
ever we go (Matthew 28:20)
and to give us perfect
peace when we trust in
Him (Isaiah 26:3). From
a secular perspective
prosperity is measured
by the house we live
in, the clothes we wear, the car
we drive, where we go on vacation, etc.
But from a Christian world view prosperity
is having enough coupled with the joy of
seeing God's work advance.
5. Debt is bad. (Proverbs 22:7;
Deuteronomy 28:15-68; Romans 13:8).
Debt is responsible tor untold misery in
America. Thousands of families declare
bankruptcy each week. Many more thou-
sands live a stress filled life trying to stay a
step ahead of their creditors. The problems
caused by debt are also associated with a
high percentage of divorces.
6. The tithe is the minimum testi-
mony of our Christian Commitment.
(Genesis 14:20; 28:20-22; Malachi 3:6-10).
No where in the Bible does God suggest
that less than a tenth is His. With regard
to tithe God does not appeal to our grati-
tude or our generosity. It is a matter of
simple honesty. Tithe is holy and it be-
longs to God. (Leviticus 27:30).
7. We must all give an account to God
of our stewardship. (Matthew 25:19; 2
Corinthians 5:10; Revelation 22:12).
There is nothing more certain in the Bible
than the fact that we must all face the
judgment. "To have faith means to find
and accept the gospel treasure, with all the
obligations which it imposes" (Christ's
Object Lessons, p. 112). "Let us not keep
16 • SUMMER 2001
back from God that which is His own. Let
us not refuse Him that which, though it
cannot he given with merit, cannot he
denied without ruin" (Acts of the Apostles,
p. 566). The simple point here is that I can
not pay my way to heaven hut I could
spend my way out of heaven by untaithtul
stewardship.
Applying the
principles to finances
With this foundation ot Biblical prin-
ciples we can now apply them to our per-
sonal financial management. 1 first must
develop a simple budget that uses the prin-
ciples. For most people the idea of a budget
is about as popular as going on a diet, but
with a simple workable budget the results
are so dramatic that many feel it is worth
the effort. So what is a budget? It is just a
written outline of family income and ex-
penses that allows a person to easily see his
financial picture. The goal, of course, is to
keep expenses within the bounds of the
income.
Many families feel that they are too
busy to take the time to manage. But when
you stop and think about it your family is
like a small business and if it is not oper-
ated as such you will soon be out of busi-
ness. The income side of the equation can
be enhanced by hard work, diligence, ad-
vanced education, and taking on addi-
tional work. For best results a family should
seek to maximize income and minimize
expenses especially when there is a need to
get out of debt. Debt results when we
spend more than we make, and it is easy to
do with the barrage of advertizing today
that postpones payments for a period of
time - the old "buy now and pay later"
syndrome.
Most people who have fallen into debt
had good intentions of paying off the debt
in the future. But since we can't predict
the future, frequently unforeseen events
occur that hinder the ability of a family to
meet its obligations. When this happens
one must either borrow more money to
meet the demands or file for bankruptcy
protection and ruin their credit rating.
I recommend the following simple bud-
get plan as a guideline for living within
your means.
First of all, determine your total family
income from all sources in the course of a
year. Then divide that amount by twelve
to determine the amount of available
money on a monthly basis. Any
money that becomes available that
wasn't planned for can be used to reduce
debt or put in savings for emergency
needs and to make contributions to
advance God's cause.
Next comes the expense column.
It is very enlightening for most
families to actually list all the ex-
penditures for a single month. If there
are any expenses that only occur on an
annual basis such as property taxes or in-
surance payments then these should be
divided by twelve and set aside on a
monthly basis so that when the item is due
there are funds available without having to
go into debt.
There are two "expense" items that are
frequently left off the budget that should
actually be at the top of the list and pro-
vided for before the regular budget items
are listed. These two items are tithe (and
offerings) and taxes. We put our contribu-
tions first because God asks us to. "Honor
the Lord with your possessions, and with
the firstfruits of all your increase; so your
bams will be filled with plenty, and your
vats will overflow with new wine" (Prov-
erbs 3:9,10). Many can give testimony to
the fact that if they waited until the last
thing to return their tithe and pay their
offerings that frequently there just
wouldn't be enough money available. But
miraculously, when we put these items first
as God commanded, the money seems to
go farther. In the books. Over and Over
Again, volumes I and II we have published
three hundred such testimonies of those
who have taken God at His word and
proven Him faithful.
The second item to be deducted from
the income is taxes. For most families this
will be twenty percent or more. Taxes are
usually taken out by your employer unless
you are self-employed and then you must
exercise the discipline of setting aside your
taxes on a systematic basis.
Now you are ready to tackle your regu-
lar family expenses. It comes as quite a
surprise to many families that once tithe,
offerings, and taxes are taken out of the
^
^^%^
monthly income that only about sixty five
percent of the income is left for family
management. This amount is really your
"net spendable income." Family expenses
can now be divided into ten major catego-
ries. They are: housing, food, auto, insur-
ance, debts, recreation, clothing, savings,
medical and miscellaneous. If you have
children in private school you must add an
additional category of "tuition expense."
Once these categories are set up then
you must assign each one a percentage of
your net spendable income. For example:
housing-30 percent, food-15 percent,
auto- 17 percent, etc. Your actual percent-
ages will vary but you only have 100 per-
cent to spend. Spending beyond 100
percent means going into debt which you
should avoid vigorously.
It is a very pleasant and rewarding ex-
perience to he debt free, living within your
means, and free to make additional contri-
butions to help others and advance the
cause of God. By the grace of God, hard
work, and self-discipline your family can he
in that position. May God grant you His
wisdom and blessing as you strive for finan-
cial faithfulness.

Restoring
Your name on a brick helps
restore Lynn Wood Hall
Since 1924, Lynn Wood Hall has been a campus landmark.
OuihMfmer plan is to restore Lynn Wood back to a
fully functioning campus facility. While the building
houses the Heritage Museum, the advancement offices ^
and the campus safety department, its spacious third I
story is unused and needs extensive renovations. '
Plans call for the counseling center, the center for
learning success, and a large conference room to
occupy the top floor, each providing much needed
student services. Southern seeks the support of
alumni and friends for this restoration project
recognizing donors with a Lynn Wood Hall brick plaza.
Every dollar donated toward this project will be matched
through a challenge grant the university has received. Paving
the plaza with donors' names and creating another beauty
spot on campus will enhance student life as well as restore an
important part of our campus heritage.
For details on how you can become part
of this project, call 423.238.2772, or go
online at alumni.southern.edu

Alumnus gives life in the line of duty
Sheriffs Deputy Donald K. Bond, attended '85 to '87, was killed by gunfire in the line of duty on
September 6, 2001, at the age of 35. Bond was married to Charity (Williams), '99.
His funeral was held September 10 at the Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church.
The service drew hundreds of law enforcement officers from across the country. The
Chattanooga Funeral Home announced that the ceremony was the largest funeral in
Chattanooga histo^. The church's 1,600 seating capacity was unable to accommodate
the hundreds who watched the service via live feed in the lies P.E. Center.
Interstate 75 was honorarily closed during Bond's funeral procession from the
church to his burial site at the National Cemete^. Chattanoogans lined roads and
bridges to express grief and support during the several-mile-long procession of
emergency and law enforcement vehicles. Live coverage was aired on local and national news.
Hamilton County Sheriff John Cupp recalled Bond's dedication to public safety. "I think of Don as a
servant Don gave everything a human has to give."
"What the man who shot Don didn't know is that Don probably would have given his life to protect
him," said Ed Wright, pastor of the Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church.

-Beyond th
I he theory of evolution isn't just a theory
anymore, it's a fact." Startled from my
daydream, 1 sat up in my chair as the teacher
continued. "Once a theory has stood the
test of time, it becomes fact. No one has
been able to disprove the theory of evolu-
tion." 1 looked around to see my friends
and classmates in English Composition
scribbling notes as the teacher spoke, not
for a moment questioning what they heard.
TTiis was the kind of thing that I ex-
pected to hear in my Biology class. After
all, few of the professors at my public col-
lege were Christians. But why would my
English teacher take time to emphasize this
stuff? I left class early that day.
Two years have passed since then. For-
tunately, 1 no longer attend a community
college, but sometimes I ask myself why I
came to Southern.
There are several reasons why I should
be at another school. A public college, for
example, would be cheaper, and there are
several Adventist colleges closer to my
home in Montana than Southern. So why
am 1 here?
Recently 1 have reached the following
conclusions. My spiritual experience is
much healthier, and I'm receiving a better
education. But perhaps the most notice-
able benefit is my new friends — friends like
Marius and Brandon.
Marius works in the campus ministries
office and is one of the craziest, most fun-
loving theology majors on campus. He goes
camping, backpacking, and rock climbing
on the weekends, and drives faster than
most people I know. He leads out in a
prayer group, gives evening worship ser-
vices in the dorm, and prays with me when
we're both in need of encouragement. Even
though he's a Resident Assistant dean that
has to deal with dorm residents all the
time, 1 know that I can go to his room
whenever 1 want and just talk, listen to
music, or help eat his supply of Pop-tarts.
Brandon is the guy three doors down
from my dorm room that wanted to start a
Bible study gtoup with me. Just to look at
him walking around campus with music
blaring through his headphones, you'd never
guess that he's into Bible studies. He dyed
his hair blue last month and it still looks a
little funny, but we're having a great time
studying James every Tuesday night with
four or five other guys. Sometimes it's a
challenge getting everyone together, but it
has been a blessing for everyone involved.
At first I was doubtful of his sincerity, hut
now I'm learning not to judge people by
their appearances.
On this campus, young men and women
take their spirituality seriously. It's evident
wherever 1 go; I overhear students talking
about God as I haul my books to class, I see
them praying on the Promenade and over
their pizza, and in church on Sabbath I belt
out 'Tor All The Saints" with a thousand
other students. Dorm worships, Bible study
groups, prayer groups, vespers services,
church and Sabbath school, various reli-
gion courses and outreach programs all
contribute to the healthy spiritual atmo-
sphere on campus.
In addition to students, the staff and
faculty are a big part of Southern's spiritual
emphasis. Instead of hearing about the
TTieory of Evolution in my English classes,
I'm reading Paradise Lost, John Donne, and
even some Ellen White. My very first class
at Southern was Earth Science, taught by
Cyril Roe. Instead of following the typical
interpretation of geologists that the earth is
millions of years old, Dr. Roe logically
presented evidence that supports the
Christian perspective of Creation. The first
thing we did in class each day was have a
prayer. Not once in my entire two years of
community college did any of my teachers
offer a prayer.
Praying in the classroom is one thing,
but what a radical thing it would be to
have one of your professors come to your
dorm room to pray with you and your
friends. Philip Samaan is one such radical
person. In my Studies in Daniel class he is
very professional and articulate, but when
he's not teaching, he's actively interested
in each of his students. He canies a list of
their names and photos, and calls them on
the phone. If they are sick, he visits them,
and if they want to talk, he listens. He
even invited my sister and me to come
over to his home any time we wanted.
"Come and play the piano," he said.
"We also have plenty of food in the refrig-
erator." Dr. Samaan, with his kindness and
genuine spiritual mentoring and encour-
agement, embodies the educational experi-
ence at Southern Adventist University.
So, why did 1 come to Southern?
Marius. Bran-
don. Dr. Roe.
Dr. Samaan.
Any of these
people could be
an answer, and
yet they are only
a few of many. DPit"'"lj^^, A
Of course you'll
find all types of
people at South-

more important,
you will find
what you're
looking for. 1
came to South-
em looking for a positive spiritual atmo-
sphere, and that's exactly what 1 found. 1
came to Southern because this is where
God wants me to be. The only question I
have for myself now is, "Why didn't I come
here earlier?" ^
