CUSTOMS OF COMMENCEMENT
Early commencement ceremonies at the University of Maryland
were marked with great fanfare and celebration. The faculty gave
huge banquets for the graduates the night before the event. The
following morning, crowds gathered to watch the young graduates
parade. It was a gala social occasion, attracting not only friends and
relatives, but also the fashionable elite of the day. At the ceremony,
prayers were recited, speeches were made and honorary degrees were
awarded to distinguished figures from across the country. Finally, as
the audience cheered and threw flowers, the graduates came forward
to collect their Latin-inscribed degrees.

ACADEMIC COSTUME
The black caps and gowns worn by the students and faculty in the
academic procession have been the traditional costume of scholars
since the Middle Ages. The ordinary dress of the scholar, whether
student or teacher, was similar to that of a cleric. Caps and gowns
were probably worn to keep students warm in unheated buildings.
Many medieval scholars were tonsured, like monks, and hoods served
to cover their shaved heads until the skullcap later took its place. Even
after the Civil War, most students at American universities wore caps
and gowns daily while in residence. These varied in design until the
American Intercollegiate Commission standardized them in 1894. At
that time it was decided that all robes would be black. Colors on the
trim of the gown were also standardized to indicate the scholar's
academic discipline.
The tassel may also be colored to represent an academic discipline
or it may be black. Officially, the tassel is permitted "to lie where
it will" on the mortarboard. However, numerous institutions have
adopted the practice of having degree candidates wear the tassel on
the right front side at the start of the commencement ceremony and
then shift them to the left side after degrees are awarded.
SENIOR MARSHALS
Elected through a nomination process, senior marshals are leaders
who play an important role in the graduation ceremony. They assist
in organizing the thousands of graduates, leading them smoothly
through the commencement procession. They also supply extra
caps and hoods, as well as bobby pins to keep headwear secure.
Winter 2011 marshals are listed on page 49 of this booklet.

Speaker Biographies
KEVIN MATUSZAK / STUDENT SPEAKER
kevin matuszak can't pick just one
highlight of his time at Maryland. Maybe
it was researching prison reform with his
Gemstone team. He also loved his month
in Italy studying the ruins of the ancient
Roman Empire. And he put his finance
education to work while interning at an
investment firm.
Coming from a "very homogenous"
all-male private school, he took advantage
of the exploratory nature of college, and
Maryland's encouraging environment to
broaden his frame of reference. "It's good to
connect with people different from you," he
says.
In the Gemstone Peace in Prisons project,
he and peers examined the effectiveness of
prison programming on violent attitudes and
beliefs. Matuszak found himself chatting
comfortably with a former gang member
about Terp basketball.
"This was someone you would never see
yourself with," says Matuszak. "When you
have an experience like that, there's this
commonality you find."
He began to stretch in other ways. He-
arrived at Maryland as a biology pre-med
major because he thought being a doctor was
a respectable career. Then, he says, "I started
thinking that I hated what I was doing."
Matuszak had taken a few accounting
classes he thought would help with hospital
management. He found he liked them more
than the biology and organic chemistry
courses, and he switched majors in the fall of
his junior year. The late change "was hectic,
but definitely worth it," he says.
At his internship with Pinnacle Advisory
Group in Columbia, Md., an investment
firm, he enthusiastically pored over research
reports left in a box for him by colleagues. "I
could make connections between what I was
learning at Maryland, what I was reading
and what happens in the markets every day."
Matuszak will begin working in the
audit division of PricewaterhouseCoopers in
Baltimore in January. Though he values what
shaped his career path, he wishes that he
discovered it a bit sooner.
"I should've listened to myself, trusted
myself more," he says and offers some advice
to students and fellow graduates:
"Do something that you like and not
necessarily something that has value put
on it by other people."

RICHARD R. "RICKY" ARNOLD II M.S. '92 / COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
INSPIRED BY CHILDHOOD MI MORHS ot
American spacewalks and ocean explorer
Jacques Cousteau, Richard R. "Ricky"
.Arnold 11 M.S. '92 has explored both
underwater and space.
A mission specialist with NASA,
the Bowie native earned a bachelor's in
accounting from Frostburg State University
in 1985, because he was "good with numbers."
Halfway through the program, however,
he realized that he preferred his science
electives.
Two years later, he began working as an
oceanographic technician at the United States
Naval Academy. He went on to teach science
at lohn Hanson Middle School in Waldorf,
Md. While there, he earned a master's degree
through Maryland's marine, estuarine and
environmental sciences program. Arnold
conducted research in rock strata dating at
the Horn Point Environmental Laboratory in
Cambridge, Md. He also spent time at the
Cape Cod National Seashore and aboard a
training/oceanographie vessel.
A year after graduation, Arnold joined
the faculty at the Casablanca American
School in Morocco to teach college prepatory
biology and marine environmental science.
In 1996, he and his family moved to Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia, where he taught middle and
high school science and served as department
chair at the American International School.
While there, he learned of NASA's search for
professional classroom teachers.
By then, he'd taught middle school math
and science in West Papua, Indonesia, and
at the American International School of
Bucharest in Romania.
He was accepted by NASA in 2004.
Arnold completed aquanaut training and
spent 10 days on the Extreme Environment
Mission Objectives project at Aquarius, the
world's only undersea laboratory. The crew
conducted experiments and operations in a
simulated lunar outpost.
During a 14-day mission aboard the
shuttle Discovery in March 2009, he
completed two space walks to help install
solar panels and a truss element at the
International Space Station.
He now keeps his feet on the ground in
Houston as training lead for extravehicular
activity. While he'd love to go back into space,
"I've been really fortunate already."
Arnold says his Maryland experience was
key to his full life. "I was well-prepared to do
all of the different things that I've done."
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND 20ii Winter Commencement 11
Maryland's Momentum
Nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit in students and faculty. Forging
powerful federal partnerships to address world concerns. Creating
artistic experiences to enrich the community. Members of the university
community do this and more. Fear the Turtle!
Maryland continues to strengthen its
reputation as one of the top public research
institutions nationally and internationally. It
boasted 30 programs in U.S. News & World
Report's top 10 rankings in 2011 and placed
38th in the 2011 Academic Ranking of World
Universities.
Maryland netted $472 million in external
research grants in fiscal 2011 The university
has brought in more than $1.5 billion over
the past three years, including funding for
collaborative research in environmental
science, air traffic management and space
exploration.
The university is leading a new national effort
to develop the scientific knowledge needed
to implement a series of food safety metrics-
involving water, environment, handling and
supply chain variables— for leafy greens and
tomatoes The Specialty Crop Research
Initiative joins Maryland researchers with
scientists at six other universities and two
federal agencies to help prevent food-borne
illnesses. The three-year project is funded
by an almost $5.4 million grant from the
U.S. Department of Agriculture and similar
funding from the produce industry.
A landmark gift of $10 million from Baltimore
developer and philanthropist Edward St. John
'61 will help create a world-class learning and
teaching space at the university: the Edward
St. John Learning and Teaching Center The
building will be located on McKeldin Mall
and will incorporate the facade of historic
Holzapfel Hall. When completed, more than
a third of the undergraduate student body
will attend classes there daily.
Working toward its strategic priority of
increasing Maryland's international reach
the university has formed more than
300 partnerships with universities and
governments overseas. Faculty hail from
more than 130 countries, and Maryland is
consistently named among the top 25
universities welcoming international students,
with 134 countries being represented.
Great Expectations, The Campaign for
Maryland is shooting to break the $900
million mark by the end of the year A
priority of the $1 billion campaign is to raise
more than $250 million for scholarships.
Maryland students won the U.S.
Department of Energy's 2011 Solar
Decathlon by planning and building an
innovative solar-powered house. Their
entry, Watershed, won the international
contest by combining energy efficiency,
cost-effectiveness and attractiveness.
Maryland astronomers, led by Jessica
Sunshine, are part of a group awarded $3
million from NASA to compete for final
selection as an upcoming mission in the
agency's Discovery Program. If approved,
their Comet Hopper project would launch in
2016, sending a vehicle that would "hop"—
landing multiple times— on a comet to
collect data from the soil and atmosphere.

OUR HISTORY & OUR FUTURE
From it^ pre-Civil Wai roots as the state's first agricultural college
and one ol America's original land-grant institutions, the University
ol Maryland has emerged .is .1 public resean li university "l national
stature, highly regarded for its broad base ol excellence in teaching
and research.
Founded in 1856 bj a group of planters, the formei Maryland
\ ",i u ultural College required students to spend an hour a 1l.1v hoeing
or plowing on the college l.irm and to take courses in ancient and
modern languages, natural sciences, I nglish and mathematics. After a
disastrous fire on campus in 1912, the state acquired the 1 ollege and
rebuilt it. The legislature in 1988 combined its institutions of higher
education to form the University System of Maryland, and the
growing College Park campus was named its flagship.
Tod. iv, Marvland takes full advantage ot the unique resources of
the nation's capital, attracting top students and faculty; enriching
the economic, social and cultural life of the state; and engaging the
global community to address some ot the most critical issues of our
day. Within the university's 12 schools and colleges, our academic
community is addressing today's most pressing scientific and societal
challenges, such as climate change, the economy, energy, homeland
security and public health.
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND 2011 Winter Commencement 13
Our student body of 27,000 undergraduate students and 10,000
graduate students comes to study with a faculty that ranks among
the finest in the nation, with three Nobel laureates, five Pulitzer Prize
winners and scores of Fulbright scholars.
The quality of our students and the support of our alumni continue
to grow. We received more than 26,000 applications for 4,000
first-year seats in Fall 2011. Accepted students who complete their
academic journey join a rapidly increasing family of alumni who
are proud to be called Terps. The University of Maryland Alumni
Association has grown to more than 35,000 dues-paying members
since its inception in 1989.
As a gateway to the world, the university has established more
than 250 educational, research and economic relationships with
people and institutions in countries such as China, India, Brazil,
Israel and the United Arab Emirates. The Maryland Technology
Enterprise Institute, or Mtech; the University of Maryland Small
Business Development Network; and the Dingman Center for
Entrepreneurship nurture a culture of thriving entrepreneurship
at the university. They are leading efforts to educate and assist
business start-ups, create technology ventures and connect Maryland
companies with university resources to help them succeed. Through
its Office of Technology Commercialization, the university has
secured more than 440 U.S. patents, licensed more than 565
technologies and helped to create 60 high-tech startup companies.
Among them are award-winning firms that create alternative energy
solutions, national security tools and data systems to protect against
Internet viruses. Companies served by Mtech sold more than $25.7
billion in goods and services over the last 25 years.
Maryland is part of the prestigious 63-member Association
of American Universities and the only public institution in
the Maryland-D.C. area with membership in the nation's most
distinguished honor society, Phi Beta Kappa.
THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
With alumni clubs from Miami to Taipei, Taiwan, the alumni
association strives to maintain and strengthen ties between the
university and its graduates. Member events such as pre-game parties,
bull roasts, picnics, golf tournaments, dinner cruises and subscriptions
to Tcrp magazine help keep alumni connected to the university
and each other. All graduating seniors and successful master's and
doctoral candidates receive a one-year free membership in the
Maryland Alumni Association.

Doctoral Degrees
The doctoral degree is the most advanced earned degree conferred by American institutions.
There are two distinct types: the practitioner's degree and the research degree. The first
type represents advanced training for the practice of various professions, principally doctor
of medicine, juris doctor, doctor of pharmacy and doctor of veterinary medicine. These
degrees do not involve the completion of original research by the student. The University of
Maryland, at the professional school in Baltimore, awarded the first two dental degrees on
March a, 184.1.
