BEST WISHES AND CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL GRADUATES
m ongratulations on the completion of your degree! This milestone in your life
^ should bring great satisfaction and pride to you, your family and friends. It is a
^^^^,^^" big deal. I am confident that your appreciation of your Maryland experience
will blossom more fully every year. You have learned the theories that underlie your field, and
the ways to formulate and promote your ideas. You have also learned that asking the right
question rather than getting the right answer is often the stepping-stone to knowledge.
The Universitv' of Maryland has offered you opportunities to develop your interests and
expand your horizons. You have made friends and found mentors, and they too will add value
to your hfe in ways that none of us can specif)' today, even though history- makes us confident
that it wiU happen.
As you leave us, I would like you to know how much we, the faculty and stafi", respect your
accomplishments as scholar, artist, athlete and leader — as individuals. You have enriched our
lives and have helped the universits- reach new levels of distinction. We welcome you into the
university's alumni family, a truly special group.
I urge you to stay connected to Maryland and take full advantage of the benefits of being
an alumnus of the university. I hope that you will continue to support us and help new gener-
ations of students shape their futures as you have shaped yours. In this our 150th Anniversary
year, please come back to campus tor the many celebrations, especially on April 29th tor
Maryland Day 2006.
You have my very best wishes for all your endeavors. We are proud of each and every one
of you! Stay in touch.
Yours sincerely,
C. D. Mote, Jr.

MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
M ongratulations. Graduates!
■ l-lit;ht now, you are probably more concerned with graduating, packing and
^^ <T preparing for life's next challenge than pondering an ongoing relationship with
the Universirs- of Maryland.
But once your diploma is on the wall, your apartment security deposit has been restored and
your IM budd\- list is filled with new colleagues, I hope you will remember your alma mater.
As a member of our alumni family, you have Terrapin spirit that only comes from spending
years on campus, learning and growing. The university can harness that spirit to build a
brilliant future — a future you share now that Maryland appears on your resume.
Alumm association membership is the No. 1 way for you to demonstrate your spirit and
keep m touch with the university. It also allows you to retain the relationships and resources
that you have enjoyed here.
The association is proud to offer you a complimentary one-year membership as a
graduation gift. Once you activate it at vvww.alumm. umd.edu. your membership will:
• provide access to professional networking receptions and social programming
• allow you to take part in events at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center
• give you the opportunits- to support future generations ot Terps
In addition, the association has partnered with car and health insurers, as well as loan-
consohdation companies to help ease your transition into post-college lite. Today, that transition
is all consuming. But once it is complete, remember your university and stay connected.
Congratulations on your graduation and best of luck to you in your new role as
Marvlanci alumni.
Sincerely,
Danita D. Nias "81

H m VC'hile graduation is believed to be a time of
^^L—^^ ending, the term "commencement" actually
means beginning. We are celebrating a new start m which we
will more fully mature into the skills, talents, experiences and
personalities we have developed in the past few years. It is a
time to see from where we have come, admire who we are
today and imagine our potential.
We are all focusing on our journeys in different ways, but
we share a time period that others cannot tuUy comprehend as
we do. We are witness to shared experiences on campus, in the
local communitv' and in the world around us. We have created
a community upon which to depend in times of need and
with whom to celebrate in times of excitement. Our strength
revolves around our individuality and compassion.
Graduation is not a time to stop learning or sever this
devotion to the University ot Maryland, tor it will always be
our home. As much as these few years have helped us develop,
our influence has made an indelible mark on this institution.
Congratulations graduates and best wishes!

WINTER COMMENCEMENT
THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND
A Conrinuing Commitment
to Excellence
From Its pre-CivilWar roots as
the states first agricultural college
and one of America's original land
grant institutions, the University
of Maryland has emerged as a
public research university of
national stature, highly regarded
for its broad base of excellence in
teaching and research. Marylancl s
beautifiil 1,200-acre campus is in
the heart of the 1-270 research
corridor that is fiaehng a burgeon-
ing information technology and
biotechnology industry.
The momentum of recent years
has poised the university to take
leadership in shaping the research
university of the 21st century. By
virtually every measure of quality,
the UniversitN' of Mar\'land has
gained national recognition as one
of the fastest rising comprehensive
research institutions in the country.
Maryland is one of the nation's Top
2(1 public national universities, and
the quahty of our faculty is among
the finest of any research university
in the United States.
There are 13 schools and
colleges within the organizational
structure of the University of
Mar\-land. Seven of these units —
the Smith School of Business, the
College of Education, the Clark
School of Engineering, the PhiUp
Merrill College of Journalism, the
College of Computer, Mathemati-
cal and Physical Sciences, the
College of Information Studies and
the School of Public Policy — have
been recognized by their peers and
in various rankings as among the 25
best in the nation. The breadth of
this e.xcellence is a source of pride
for students, faculty and staff, and is
endorsement for the university's
flagship stanis among the state's
institutions ot higher education.
The university also continues
to move forward in the quality
of our students and the support
of our faithfijl alumni. Freshman
admission is increasingly competi-
tive. Last year 22,468 applications
were received for only 4,223 spots
in the Fall 2005 entering class.
Once accepted students complete
their academic journey, they will
join a rapidly increasing family of
alumni who are proud to be called
Terps. Maryland Alumni Associa-
tion membership has grown to
more than 30,000 dues paying
members since its inception in 1989.
The university's commitment
to quahty education in a research
environment is key to its academic
reputation and the success of its
graduates. More than 100 centers
and institutes are engaged in
research and outreach. The research
enterprise infijses the curriculum
at both the undergraduate and
graduate levels, e.xposing students
to the most pressing issues and
challenges in their discipline and
traimng them to respond with
rigor as well as creativity to con-
temporary problems.
Faculty at the University of
Maryland, in all fields of knowl-
edge, are engaged at the highest
levels of national and international
concern. The university's location
near the center of federal pohcy-
making and international political
and economic activity enables it to
play an active role in research and

history. OTC has recorded more
than 1.500 technologies, secured
more than 275 patents and licensed
more than 750 technologies, gen-

History
The University of Maryland
was founded in 1 807 in Baltimore
as a faculty-owned College of
Medicine. The medical school
was considered one ot the top
schools in the country, attracting
notable professors and lecturers
fi-om throughout the world. In its
beginning, tuition cost $140. grades
were sent home weekly to parents,
and students could obtain room
and board for S300 annually.
Five years later, the growing
institution was renamed the
Universitv' of Maryland. Despite
the name, the university was not
considered a state institution as it
was still owned and operated by
faculty. Baltimore College of
Dental Surgery, the first dental
school in the world, became a
part of the university- in 1840,
awarding the first Doctor of Dental
Surgery (D.D.S.) degree in 1841.
In 1859. the Mary-land Agricul-
tural College, which would evolve
into the University- of Marykand,

Research Building, bolstering the university's goal to provide regional
leadership in education and research for the biosciences.
Our Constellation of Stars: The quality of Maryland faculty ranks
among the finest of any research university in the United States and
includes two Nobel Prize winners, si.x Puhtzer Prize winners and
scores of Fulbright scholars.
Impact of Another Kind: NASA turned to the university to lead a
$279 million mission that gave astronomers a first look inside a comet,
revealing the pristine materials that form the basis of our solar system.
Deep Impact hit Comet Tempel 1 on July 4, 2005, providing valuable
information for researchers.
Lighting a Path: The university- is embarking on a new fundraising
campaign that includes among its goals raising at least $200 million
for student scholarships, which are needed to ensure that lower- and
middle-income students have the financial means to attain their
degrees. Co-chairing this important effort is alumnus and men's head
basketball coach Gary Williams and alumnus and national newswoman
Connie Chung.
An Economic Force: The University of Maryland generates $5.93
of economic activity for every- dollar .appropriated by the General

WINTER COMMENCEMENT
THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND
a charter secured by a group of
Maryland planters in 1856. In
addition to spending one hour
each day hoeing or plowing on the
college farm, students took a broad
range of courses in ancient and
modern languages, natural sciences,
English and mathematics. After a
disastrous fire on campus in 1912,
the state acquired the college and
rebuilt it.
In 1920, the state legislature
combined the College Park institu-
tion with the professional schools
in Baltimore to form an expanded
University of Maryland. The entity
eventually grew to include campuses
in Baltimore County, the Eastern
Shore and University College, a
continuing education institution.
The following decades saw the
increasing growth of student popu-
lation, excellence in programs and
curricula, and the burgeoning
of the University of Maryland,
College Park, into a nationally
recognized research institution.
July 1, 1988, marked the dawn
of a new era in higher education
in the state of Maryland, as the five
components of the university were
merged with six other state univer-
sities and colleges to form the
University System of Maryland,
and the University of Maryland,
College Park, secured its flagship
status with a mandate to become
one of the pre-eminent research
universities in the nation.
The Alumni Association
With alumm clubs from Miami
to Taipei, Taiwan, the Maryland
Alumni Association strives to keep
and strengthen ties between the
university and its graduates.
Member events such as pre-
game parties, bull roasts, picnics,
golf tournaments, dinner cruises and
subscriptions to Teq>, the Universitv'
of Maryland magazine, help keep
alumni cormected to the university
and to each other. All graduating
seniors and successfiil masters and
Ph.D. candidates receive a one-year

Customs of Commencement
Early comjiienceniciit ccrcinomcs
at the University of Maryland
were marked with great fanfare
and celebration. The faculty gave
huge banquets for the graduates
the night before the event. The
following morning.crowds gathered
to watch the young graduates
parade. It was a gala social occasion,
attracting not only friends and rela-
nves, but the fashionable elite of the
day. At the ceremony, prayers were
recited.speeches were made.and
honorary degrees were awarded
to distinguished figures from across
the country. Finally, as the audience
cheered and threw flowers, the
graduates came forward to collect
their Latin-inscribed degrees.
Academic Costume
The black caps and gowns worn
by the students and faculty in the
academic procession have been the
traditional costume of scholars since
the Middle Ages. The ordinary dress
of the scholar, whether student or
teacher, was similar to that ot a
cleric. Caps and gowns were
probably worn to keep students
warm in unheated buildings. Many
medieval scholars were tonsured,
hke monks, and hoods served to
cover their shaved heads until the
skuUcap later took its place.
Even after the Civil War, most
students at American universities
wore caps and gowns daily while
in residence. These varied in design
until they were standardized by the
American Intercollegiate
Commission in 1894. At that time
it was decided that all robes would
be black. Colors on the trim of the
gown were also standardized to
indicate the scholar's academic
discipline.
A Ust of department colors follows:
Agriculture: Maize
Arts, Letters.Humani ties: White
Business Administration.
Commercial Science: Drab
Dentistry: Lilac
Economics: Copper

The tassel may also be colored
to represent an academic discipline
or it may be black. Officially, the
tassel is perimtted "to lie where it
will" on the mortarboard. Howx'ver.
numerous institutions have adoptetl
the practice of having degree
candidates wear the ta.ssel on the
right front side at the start of the
commencement ceremony and
then shift them to the left side
after degrees are awarded.
Student Marshals
Elected through a nomination
process, student marshals are senior
leaders who play an important
role in the graduation ceremony.
Student marshals assist in organizing
the thousands of graduates, leading
them smoothly through the
commencement procession. They
also supply extra caps and hoods,
and bobby pins to keep headwear
secure. December 2005 marshals are
listed on page 65 of this booklet.
Senior Gift
Since 1910, members of the
graduating class have supported
a senior gift designed to
conuneinorate their college
experience. Traditionally the
gift serves as a contribution to
the campus community that
forever links alumni with the
university. Past gifts include the
Testudo statue, gardens, artwork,
contributions to the library and
support for projects such as the
Jim Benson statue and the sundial.
The M circle is a Maryland
icon. It's probably one of the things
remembered most about campus
upon graduation. The Class of
2005 has the chance to leave its
mark on campus by placing a similar
landmark near Lot 1 and the
Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center —
one that will inspire students,
impress visiting football teams and
become a symbol for alumni.
This year, the Senior Council
has arranged to landscape that circle
for the 2005-2006 Senior Class Gift.

in Baltimore, awarded the first
two dental degrees ever on
March 9,1841, and invented the
name of the degree. Doctor of
Dental Surgery (D.D.S.).
The University of Maryland
conveys the Doctor ot'Veterman.'
Medicine (D.V.M.) to
approximately 90 students
each year in a program that
was instinited in 1980. Graduates
receive a diploma containing
the seals of both the Universirs-
of Maryland and its partner
institution, the Virginia Polytechnic
Institute and State University.
The second type is the research
doctorate representing prolonged
periods ot advanced study.
A dissertanon that usually
accompames the study is intended
to contribute substantially to the
body of knowledge on the subject.
The most important of these.the
Doctor of Philosophy, no longer
has an implication of philosophy
for its holder, but represents
advanced research in any of the
major fields of knowledge. It was
first awarded in the United States
in 1861 by Yale University.The
University of Maryland awarded a
Ph.D.for the first time in 1920.
The Master's Degree
The master's degree is an academic
honor bestowed upon students
who have successfiilly completed
work beyond the baccalaureate.
A thesis and an oral examination
are usually required. In 1920, the
Universit\- of Mar\-land awarded
Its first Master of Arts (M.A.) and
Master of Science (M.S.) degrees
in fields other than agriculture.
The Bachelor's Degree
The bachelor's degree represents
the completion of a four-year
course of coUege-level study
and is the oldest acadenuc degree
awarded by American institutions
of higher learning. It was first
conferred in America in 1642 on
the first nine graduates of Har\'ard
College. Maryland Agricultural
College, which later became the
University of Maryland. College
Park, awarded its first Bachelor
of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of
Science (B.S.) in 1862.
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND
COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
Students and parents awarded him for being an outstanding faculty' member. Students
also chose him for an honor from Kappa Delta Pi. an international education honor
societ\-. For [ohn Splaine. the rewards of being an educator reaUy come from being
around those who want to learn and "encouraging them to explore their interests."
An associate professor emeritus in the College of Education and recently retired Amos B.
Hostetter.Jr.. chair at the Universm- of Denver where he taught courses in political communi-
cation. Splaine began his teaching career as a high school history teacher in New Hampshire.
He directed the Unlversit^• of New Hampshire's Upward Bmind program for low-income
college students from 1970 to 197.3. He then came to the university, where he taught full time
until 2(101. He still teaches foundations of education courses part-time.
He believes that involving students in their learning enriches the process."! try to challenge
students to think for themselves. However, 1 believe that they need knowledge in order to
think criticalK' about what they read, hear and see," he says.
He took this concept to Croatia and Yugoslavia a few years ago. Working through Croatia's
Solidarity- Center and then m Montenegro, Splaine used his experience on political campaigns
to teach courses in media literacy for teachers used to government propaganda. Splaine says
that being even a small part of the regions "peaceful revolution was a great adventure. One
of the highlights of my life."
Another higlilight was being named a Philip Merrill Presidential Scholars Program Faculty
Mentor in 2000. The program honors the university's most successful seniors and their desig-
nated umversity faculty and K-12 teachers for their mentorship
Splaine earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in American history from the University
of New Hampshire, and a doctorate in education from Boston University. His 1994 book, A
Compaiiioii to the Liiicoln-Doughn /)(7n)fM, was published to accompany C-SPAN"s televised re-
enactments of the 1858 events. A companion CD-ROM, "A House Divided; The Lincoln-
Douglas Debates," received the Gold Apple award from the National Educational Media
Network. He's been an education consultant for the network for 18 years, including work
on its Peabody Award-winning series "American Presidents: Life Portraits."

WINTER COMMENCEMENT
GRADUATING STUDENT SPEAKER
Samy Bassam Muaddi
As part of a class that has seen September 1 Is horror, the war m Iraq and Hurricane
Katrina "s devastation, Samy Bassam Miiaddi beheves more than ever m the inter-
connectedness ot' humanit}'. His actions support this belief, as he has spent consid-
erable rime on communirv'-buildmg eiforts locally, narionally and internationally.
While earning academic honors every semester as an economics major, Samy found time to
not just get involved with, but to create a few university' groups. His most significant endeavor
attests to his commitment to the idea of unity. Two years ago, amidst campus tensions bet\veen
Jewish and Arab students, he co-founded The Common Grounds Project. A coUaborative effort
between the Jewish Leadership Council and the Organization of Arab Students, it asks Palestin-
ian Americans and IsraeH Americans "to come together to explore what common ground we
have to stand on. It is a process of eUminaring e.xisting layers ot mistrust and building in their
place genuine understanding of our commonahties and their limits," says the College Park
Scholar, who received a citation in Business, Society and the Economy last year.
This past summer, Samy, a first-generarion Arab American, interned with Beit Sahour
mumcipaUtx' in the Palestinian territory of the West Bank, writing successful grant proposals for
humanitarian aid and development projects. "I gained a greater appreciation for my family and
why my parents raised me the way they did," he says of the experience.
He has earned high praise from Shibley Telhami, Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and Devel-
opment, who taught Samy in an International Relations and World Politics course. "He was the
only student to earn an A+, which is unusual in my classes," says Telhami. "He struck me as an
intelligent and thoughthal young man who deserves to be recognized."
Through all this. Samy still found time to play. He co-founded Terp Runners, participating
in several marathons, and a Debkeh troupe that performs traditional Arabic folklore dance on
and off campus.
His fliture goals include working on economic development in Middle Eastern and
sub-Saharan Africa, and convincing his parents to write their autobiographies.
