your family and friends. I am certain that your time at the univer-
sity has been filled with new ideas, friendships and opportunities. I
hope that you have explored new areas and discovered new talents.
The world is waiting for you to share them.

As you move in new directions beyond the campus, I hope that
you will remember the intellectual curiosity and drive that inspired
your time here. Graduating does not mean that learning has come to
an end. Instead it means that you are now equipped to take charge of
your own learning. This is a privilege and a profound responsibility.
Society's advancement will depend upon your knowledge and your
leadership. I am confident that you have stretched your capacities in
order to meet these challenges.

As you leave us, you should take with you the pride we all feel in
your accomplishments as scholars, artists, athletes and leaders. You
have enriched our university's life and have helped it climb to a new
level of distinction. We welcome you into the alumni family, a truly
special group.

I hope that you stay connected to the university and take full
advantage of being an alum. Stay involved and help new generations
of students develop their futures. You can do this by returning to
campus often, starting with Maryland Day 2011, on April 30.

You have my very best wishes for all your future plans. Make
your mark. And stay in touch. Go Terps!

Sincerely,

Wallace Loh

President

our athletic titles — we will make you proud to be a Terp.

no longer be a student, the traditions live on — you're a Terp for life.

Sincerely,

CUSTOMS OF COMMENCEMENT

Early commencement ceremonies at the University of Maryland
were marked with great fanfare and celebration. The faculty gave
huge banquets for the graduates the night before the event. The
following morning, crowds gathered to watch the young graduates
parade. It was a gala social occasion, attracting not only friends and
relatives, but also the fashionable elite of the day. At the ceremony,
prayers were recited, speeches were made and honorary degrees were
awarded to distinguished figures from across the country. Finally, as
the audience cheered and threw flowers, the graduates came forward
to collect their Latin-inscribed degrees.

ACADEMIC COSTUME

The black caps and gowns worn by the students and faculty in the
academic procession have been the traditional costume of scholars
since the Middle Ages. The ordinary dress of the scholar, whether
student or teacher, was similar to that of a cleric. Caps and gowns
were probably worn to keep students warm in unheated buildings.
Many medieval scholars were tonsured, like monks, and hoods served
to cover their shaved heads until the skullcap later took its place.

Even after the Civil War, most students at American universities
wore caps and gowns daily while in residence. These varied in design
until the American Intercollegiate Commission standardized them
in 1894. At that time it was decided that all robes would be black.
Colors on the trim of the gown were also standardized to indicate the
scholar's academic discipline.

The tassel may also be colored to represent an academic discipline
or it may be black. Officially, the tassel is permitted "to lie where
it will" on the mortarboard. However, numerous institutions have
adopted the practice of having degree candidates wear the tassel on
the right front side at the start of the commencement ceremony and
then shift them to the left side after degrees are awarded.

SENIOR MARSHALS

Elected through a nomination process, student marshals are senior
leaders who play an important role in the graduation ceremony.
Senior marshals assist in organizing the thousands of graduates,
leading them smoothly through the commencement procession.
They also supply extra caps and hoods, as well as bobby pins to
keep headwear secure. Winter 2010 marshals are listed on page 47
of this booklet.

ALL-STUDENT GIFT

In recognition of the philanthropic spirit of Maryland students, the
former Senior Class Gift effort has evolved to an All-Student Giving
effort at the university. Traditionally, class gifts have included items
such as the bronze Testudo now sitting in front of McKeldin Library
(Class of '33), sundial on McKeldin Mall (Class of '6^) or the Henson
Garden outside of the Stamp Student Union (Classes of '94 and '99).
The initiative encourages Terps to financially support the causes they
believe in most — from the university's community outreach and
partnerships to student groups conducting discovery and research to
solve tomorrow's complex global issues.

If you would like to be a part of this tradition of philanthropy,
visit www.mdexcellence.umd.edu or call 301.315.7749 for more
information.

ACADEMIC DEGREES

A degree is awarded for the successful completion of a course of
study. The University of Maryland offers 99 bachelor's degrees,
108 master's degrees and 83 doctoral degrees.

ROBERT W.PUCKETT II / STUDENT SPEAKER

When Robert Puckett's dad died of a heart
attack at age 44, some of those close to him
assumed that Puckett would withdraw from
his studies at Anne Arundel Community
College to run his father's concrete company.

Puckett instead made the wrenching
decision to sell it and continue to pursue a
criminology and criminal justice degree at
Maryland. He believed an education would
do more to help his family — and himself — in
the long run.

Puckett's mother stood behind him, selling
off land and vehicles to help him with tuition.
He credits her efforts as a major reason for
his success at Maryland. In March, Puckett
will enroll in the Anne Arundel County
Police Academy, hoping to eventually work
for the Drug Enforcement Agency.

He'll continue living at home while at the
academy so he can help his mom pay for his
sister's college tuition beginning next fall,
honoring his dad's directive that he take care
of them.

While at Maryland, Puckett also interned
with the Anne Arundel County Police
Department to prepare for a career fighting
crime, something that touched his life
in a painful way. While Puckett was in

community college, a friend who was home
on leave from the war in Iraq was killed
during an altercation with someone under
the influence of drugs and alcohol.

"I saw how that tragedy tore his family
apart, and I feel like it's my duty," he says.

Christopher Andrews, a lecturer in the
Department of Sociology, notes that Puckett
never mentioned his difficult circumstances,
which makes his overall 3.95 gpa even more
impressive.

Puckett says he met people at the
university who put his family's challenges
into perspective. "The diversity on campus
opened my eyes to a lot of things. I've
met quite a few people that went through
hardships as well," he says, such as friends
whose families immigrated to America so
that their children could benefit from a
better education. Through courses and long
conversations, he was reminded of advice his
father had given him.

"He once told me, 'Robert, hfe's not about
material possessions or how much money
someone makes. Rather, what's important is
gaining the knowledge to improve your life
and the lives of others.'"

CRAIG A. THOMPSON, ESQ. / COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

A native of Baltimore, Craig Thompson '92
is a partner in one of the country's top law
firms, an author and an active community
servant.

Thompson, who is also on the University
of Maryland College Park Foundation's
board of trustees, has received a number
of awards and citations reflecting his
accomplishments, including wnuv Channel
54's "Proud and Positive" award. Former
Baltimore Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke
designated May 23, 1992 as "Craig Anthony
Thompson Day" in the city. He was featured
twice in the Baltimore Business Journal as
one of 40 emerging leaders under the age of
40 in the state. Last year. The Daily Record
named him one of the 60 "Most Influential
People in the State of Maryland."

He is a partner with Venable llp, one of
The American Lawyer magazine's top 100
law firms in the country, and the largest law
firm in Maryland. Thompson is also chair of
the firm's diversity committee.

As host of the weekly talk radio show
"The Front Page" for 15 years, Thompson
was recognized by the Association of Black
Media Workers as the Best PubHc Affairs
Host (radio) in the region. For six years, he
also hosted a weekly television talk show,
"Profiles with Craig Thompson," on upn
Channel 24.

Thompson, who loves reading and
remembers Dr. Seuss' "Horton Hatches
the Egg" as one of the first books he read
as a child, has published his own works for
children: "The abcs of Black History: A
Children's Guide," in January 2005, which is
in its third printing, and "The abcs of Black
Inventors," published last year.

His writing has appeared in two other
publications, the anthology "Atonement:
The Miflion Man March," and in "Tough
Love: The Life and Death of Tupac Shakur."

Thompson's contributions to the
community are numerous. He serves on the
board of the National Great Blacks in Wax
Museum in Baltimore and the seed School
of Maryland, the state's only public boarding
school. He works closely with Baltimore
City Public Schools. He has also conducted
educational seminars around the country.

Craig and his wife, Deborah, have
two daughters, Delaney and Dana, and a
son. Carter.

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND / 2010 Winter Commencement 11

Maryland's Momentum

Nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit in students and faculty. Forging
powerful federal partnerships to address world concerns. Creating
artistic experiences to enrich the community. Members of the university
community do this and more. Fear the Turtle!

Maryland continues to strengthen its reputa-
tion as one of the top public research institu-
tions in the nation. It boasted 24 programs in
U.S. News & World Report's top 10 rankings
in 2010. Kiplinger's Personal Finance maga-
zine ranked the university No. 8 among best
values in public colleges. And The Wall Street
Journal put Maryland as No. 8 on its list of
top schools w/here employers like to recruit.

Maryland netted a record $545 million
in external research grants in fiscal 2010.

up $27 million from the previous year. It
included $10 million from the National
Science Foundation for faculty to develop
software for airplane safety and can-
cer research; $5.1 million from the U.S.
Department of Agriculture for research
on new irrigation systems to help farmers
conserve water; and $1.8 million from the
American Cancer Society to raise prostate
cancer awareness among local African-
American men.

More than 7,000, people, including 1,500
teachers, took courses this year in Chinese,
Arabic, Japanese and Persian at the National
Foreign Language Center, housed in the
College of Arts and Humanities. The center's
new frontier: producing Web-based courses
in map reading, critical thinking and signals
analysis. The federal government provided
the center's Startalk program with $15 million
in funding in 2010 to support these initiatives.

A new partnership between the university
and the National Cancer Institute is sending
graduate students in physics and math to
train alongside the nation's top cell biolo-
gists and develop new tools in the fight
against the disease.

In another new partnership, with the
National Institute of Standards and
Technology, the university has begun con-
struction on a $128 million, world-class
Physical Sciences Complex. It will house
the university's physics and astronomy

departments, as well as the interdisciplin-
ary Institute for Physical Sciences and
Technology and the Joint Quantum Institute.

The university this month launched the
Maryland Cybersecurity Center to confront
increasing threats from cyberattacks. It will
use a holistic approach to cybersecurity
education, research and technology and
will have commercial, national security and
health care IT applications, as well as uses in
the utility, telecommunications and banking
sectors.

Great Expectations, The Campaign for
Maryland is aiming to hit the $800 million
milestone by the end of 2010. A priority of
the $1 billion campaign is to raise more than
$250 million for scholarships.

12 2010 Winter Commencement I UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND

OUR HISTORY & OUR FUTURE

From its pre-Civil War roots as the state's first agricultural college
and one of America's original land-grant institutions, the University
of Maryland has emerged as a public research university of national
stature, highly regarded for its broad base of excellence in teaching
and research.

Founded in 1856 by a group of planters, the former Maryland
Agricultural College required students to spend an hour a day hoeing
or plowing on the college farm and to take courses in ancient and
modern languages, natural sciences, English and mathematics. After
a disastrous fire on campus in 1912, the state acquired the college
and rebuilt it. The legislature in 1988 combined its institutions of
higher education to form the University System of Maryland, and
the growing College Park campus was named its flagship.

Today, Maryland takes full advantage of the unique resources of
the nation's capital, attracting top students and faculty, enriching
the economic, social and cultural life of the state and engaging the
global community to address some of the most critical issues of our
day. Within the university's 12 schools and colleges, our academic
community is addressing today's most pressing scientific and societal
challenges, such as climate change, the economy, energy, homeland
security and public health.

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND / 2010 Winter Commencement 13

Our student body of 27,000 undergraduate students and 10,000
graduate students comes to study with a faculty that ranks among
the finest in the nation, with three Nobel laureates, five Pulitzer
Prize winners and scores of Fulbright scholars.

The quality of our students and the support of our alumni
continue to grow. We received more than 28,000 applications for
4,000 first-year seats in Fall 2010. Accepted students who complete
their academic journey join a rapidly increasing family of alumni
who are proud to be called Terps. The University of Maryland
Alumni Association has grown to more than 35,000 dues-paying
members since its inception in 1989.

As a gateway to the world, the university has established more
than 250 educational, research and economic relationships with
people and institutions in countries such as China, India, Brazil,
Israel and the United Arab Emirates. The Maryland Technology
Enterprise Institute, or Mtech; the University of Maryland Small
Business Development Network; and the Dingman Center for
Entrepreneurship nurture a culture of thriving entrepreneurship
at the university. They are leading efforts to educate and assist
business start-ups, create technology ventures and connect Maryland
companies with university resources to help them succeed.

Through its Office of Technology Commercialization, the
university has secured more than 360 U.S. patents, licensed more
than 515 technologies and helped to create more than 59 high-tech
start-up companies. Among them are award-winning firms that
create alternative energy solutions, national security tools, and data
systems to protect against Internet viruses. Companies served by
Mtech sold more than $22.5 billion in goods and services over the
last 25 years, more than 200 times the state's financial support.

Maryland is part of the prestigious 63 -member Association
of American Universities and the only public institution in the
Maryland-D.C. area with membership in the nation's most
distinguished honor society. Phi Beta Kappa.

THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

With alumni clubs from Miami to Taipei, Taiwan, the alumni
association strives to maintain and strengthen ties between the
university and its graduates. Member events such as pre-game
parties, bull roasts, picnics, golf tournaments, dinner cruises and
subscriptions to Terp magazine help keep alumni connected to the
university and each other. All graduating seniors and successful
master's and doctoral candidates receive a one-year free membership
in the Maryland Alumni Association.

Doctoral Degrees

The doctoral degree is the most advanced earned degree conferred by American institutions.
There are two distinct types: the practitioner's degree and the research degree. The first
type represents advanced training for the practice of various professions, principally doctor
of medicine, juris doctor, doctor of pharmacy and doctor of veterinary medicine. These
degrees do not involve the completion of original research by the student. The University of
Maryland, at the professional school in Baltimore, awarded the first two dental degrees on
March 9, 1841.

AUGUST DOCTORAL DEGREES

The University of Maryland conveys the doctor of veterinary medicine to
approximately 90 students each year in a program that was instituted in igSo. Graduates
receive a diploma containing the seals of both the University of Maryland and its partner
institutio7i, Virginia Tech.

The second type is the research doctorate representing prolonged periods of advanced
study. A dissertation that usually accompanies the stiuiy is intended to contribute
substantially to the body of knowledge on the subject. The most important of these,
the doctor of philosophy , no longer has an implication of philosophy for its holder, but
represents advanced research in any of the major fields of knowledge. The University
of Maryland awarded a Ph.D. for the first time in ic)20.
