This program is not an official
graduation list. The University's
official registry for conferral is the
student's permanent academic
record kept by the Office of
the Registrar.
The Processional
Led by the Grand Marshal carrying the University mace, the
academic procession begins with the graduating seniors and
graduate students, followed by the faculty from the three colleges
and the division of Liberal Arts, who in turn are followed by the
directors, deans, vice president, provost, distinguished guests,
members of the Board of Trustees, chairman of the Board and the
president of the university.
The tradition of academic regalia dates from the twelfth century
and is heavily influenced by clerical attire. The gowns for
holders of a doctorate degree have bell-shaped sleeves, and are
often trimmed in velvet. Master's degree hoods are usually shorter
than those for Doctoral degrees. The color of the hood lining
usually denotes the school's official color, and the velvet trim, the
earned degree. For example, brown is the color reserved for fine
arts degrees, pink for music, blue for philosophy, yellow/gold for
science, purple for law, and white for literature. The color and
shape of the hats and tassels is a matter of national, institutional
or personal preference.
Students who are graduating with academic honors are wearing
red sashes to denote their accomplishment.
The three students who have attained the highest grade point
average over four years in their respective Colleges, are wearing a
University medal in addition to their red sashes.
Alumni are distinguished by a rosette in the school colors of
cardinal red and white.
Members of the Board of Trustees are designated by a rosette
with gold ribbon, connoting their dedicated service and generosity
to the University.

Alumni Award Recipients
Donald R. Chittum
Dr. Donald R. Chittum received a Doctor of Music degree from the Philadelphia
Conservatory of Music in 1963, and has remained connected to his alma mater
for fifty-two years. Over that time, he has excelled as both a student and a
teacher of music, working with Vincent Persichetti and Boris Koutzen, among
others. Professor Chittum has participated in and influenced almost every step of
the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music's transformation into the School of Music
of The University of the Arts, in the capacity of Chairman of Composition and
Theory, Director of Graduate Studies, Director of the School of Music, and
esteemed faculty member.
In addition to his work at UArts, Professor Chittum has served as President of the
Pennsylvania Music Teachers Association, Eastern Division President of the Music
Teachers Association, National Chairman for Theory/Composition of the same
Association, President of the Pennsylvania Center for Excellence in Education,
and Director of the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts, where he is now
Director Emeritus. Professor Chittum continues to serve as a consultant to the
State department of education and other educational institutions.
Professor Chittum's books and numerous articles on music theory and education
have been published widely. His awards include Teacher of the Year from the
Pennsylvania Music Teachers Association and the Beitzel Award for outstanding
teaching from The University of the Arts.
Known to students and colleagues as "Doc," Professor Chittum is loved and
revered by the UArts community.
Joseph Musso
Joseph Musso graduated from The University of the Arts in 1963 and began his
distinguished career in the motion picture industry in 1964. A historical illustra-
tor and conceptual artist in the Art Directors Branch of the Academy of Motion
Picture Arts and Sciences, Mr. Musso has been President of the Illustrators and
Matte Artists of the Motion Picture Industry since 1978.
Mr. Musso has worked with such bright lights on the silver screen as Alfred
Hitchcock, Walt Disney, John Huston, David Zucker, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra,
Dean Martin, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Paul Newman and Clint
Eastwood. His filmography includes Mike Nichols' Who's Afraid of Virginia
Woolf, Alfred Hitchcock's The Torn Curtain, Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy, and
Gary Winick's 13 Going on 30.
While his work is represented in the permanent collection at the Warner Brothers
Museum, Mr. Musso's career continues to evolve and flourish in Hollywood. He
is featured in the Timeline Films documentary, Masters of Production: The
History of Motion Picture Art Direction, which aired on PBS this year.

Leilani Lattin Duke
Leilani Lattin Duke is not an artist or art educator - at least not on paper. But
her background in political science and liberal arts did not divert her from
dedicating her career to advocating the importance of art-based education in
schools across the nation.
Beginning as a federal aid coordinator for Senator Jacob Javits of New York, she
moved up to lead three national arts groups, then served 17 years as founding
director of the Getty Education Institute for the Arts, which, during her tenure,
embarked on a decade-long national reform effort in arts education to transform
the way art is taught in public schools. The Institute funded regional centers
where more than 1,000 teachers from 400 districts learned to integrate the arts
into existing curricula.
Ms. Duke is now Director of the Reading by 9 Initiative with the Los Angeles
Times, a five-county child literacy project, and Chairman of the American Crafts
Council, where she continues to promote the arts at a national level.
Roberto Memmo
Roberto Memmo has been a highly successful developer and industrialist in Italy,
Monaco, Great Britain and the United States. In 1972 he created the Fondazione
Memmo, a cultural organization dedicated to the dissemination of cultural
heritage and art in Italy as broadly as possible to all levels of society. The
foundation is supported privately and works in partnership with banks, television
and publishers. The Fondazione Memmo has organized over twenty major
international exhibitions on a wide variety of subjects, from Caravaggio to Julian
Freud, from Cleopatra to the Aztecs. These exhibitions are accompanied by
television documentaries, books and CDs that reach hundreds of thousands of
people of all ages.
Through his foundation, Mr. Memmo has restored the magnificent Palazzo
Ruspoli, a 16th century architectural and artistic jewel, to its present condition
and has been a staunch supporter of the conservation of monuments in Lecce, a
splendid southern Italian baroque city. He is the recipient of various international
recognition and awards.

The University of the Arts
The University of the Arts evolved from two century-old
institutions: the Philadelphia College of Art and the
Philadelphia College of Performing Arts.
The Philadelphia College of Art (PCA) was created in 1876
along with the Museum of Art. Initially known as the
Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art, the
institutions were established in response to the interest in
art and art education that was stimulated by the country_s
Centennial Exposition. In 194$, the school became known
as the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, respecting the
expanded programs that trained artists in many other
areas, including the arts. The school received accreditation
in 1959, and in 1964 separated from the Museum to
become the Philadelphia College of Art. Today, the College
of Art and Design of The University of the Arts offers
curricula in design, media arts, fine arts, crafts, and
museum and art education.
The performing arts programs of The University of the
Arts date from 1870, when three graduates of the Conser-
vatory of Leipzig opened one of the first European style
conservatories of music in America: the Philadelphia
Musical Academy. The Musical Academy became an
independent college of music in 1950, granting a Bachelor
of Music degree after a four-year course of study, one of
only eight such music colleges in the nation at the time.
While still offering only a music program, the school
changed its name to the Philadelphia College of Performing
Arts (PCPA) in 1976, the first such college in Pennsylvania.
One year later the former Philadelphia Dance Academy
became part of PCPA, and in 1983 the School of Theater
was created, achieving the college's ideal balance of
performing arts: dance, music and theater arts.
In 1985, PCA and PCPA joined to become the Philadelphia
Colleges of the Arts, and a true visual and performing arts
university was in its formative stages. With its inauguration
in 1987, The University of the Arts is the largest compre-
hensive educational institution of its kind in the nation,
preparing students for professional careers in design, fine
arts, crafts, dance, music, and theater arts.
In 1996 the University added a new College of Media and
Communication, offering degrees in communication,
writing for film and television, and multimedia.
The University's 2,100 undergraduate and graduate
students are taught by 115 full-time and 375 part-time
faculty members. In addition to the 25 undergraduate and
1 1 graduate programs, UArts offers courses of study for
artists of all ages. The Center for Continuing Studies offers
professionals the chance to advance their careers or explore
their creativity. Teachers are able to earn graduate credits
at the Professional Institute for Educators, which provides
innovative approaches to teacher education. Children
from K-8 learn from professional artist-teachers at the
Saturday Arts Lab; and high school students sample UArts
courses in the popular Pre-College Programs.
