Bryan College

Dayton, Tennessee

Volume 52

For the Beauty of the Earth

For the beauty of the earth,
For the beauty of the skies.
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies:
Lord of all to thee we raise
This our joyful hymn of praise.

For the beauty of each hour
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree and flower.
Sun and moon and stars of light:
Lord of all to thee we raise
This our joyful hymn of praise.

For the joy of human love.
Brother, sister, parent, child.
Friends on earth, and friends above,
For the gentle thoughts and mild:
Lord of all to thee we raise
This our joyful hymn of praise.

For each perfect gift of thine

To our race so freely given,

Graces human and divine,

Flowers of earth and buds of heaven:

Lord of all to thee we raise

This our joyful hymn of praise.

Student Union

:„

This year the Student Union

hosted many exciting activities,

concerts, and movies, and they

encouraged class participation and

school spirit in the various sports.

Some of the activities were late night

skating and Alpine sliding. Of the

movies that were shown, "Ghandi"

seemed to he the most favored.

Student Union brought in well-known

Christian artists such as John Fischer,

James Ward, Brown Bannister, and

Christian Stephens.

Bryan College basketball suffered
through Coach Dixon's worst season.
The final record being 6-22. At times
the team played with a lot of
gumption, but at times they didn't
come to "play". The highlight of the
season was the hard fought victory at
home against King College. The team
was hurt by the loss of Schanley at
mid-season and injuries throughout
the year to team captains, Pittard and
Anglea. Pittard, a transfer, lead the
team in points scored and field goal
percentage. Pittard averaged 21
points per game and ranked
consistently high in the top scorers of
the NAIA District 24. Other key
contributers included Stewart, Tonga,
DeKlerk, Waterworth, Lee and
Solomonic, also a transfer.

The team this year was short on depth and experience.
They were 2 and 4 overall in meets, taking 10th out of 12 in
the Berry Invitational, and coming 2nd in the NCCAA District
5 championship. Hicks came in 3rd at the District
Championship to be on the All-District team. At the NCCAA
national meet he placed 59th out of 120 runners. Coach
Bradshaw was impressed with the hard work and excellent
spirit of cooperation and unity displayed by the team.

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all

ye lands. Serve the Lord with

gladness; come before His presence

with singing.
Psalm 100:1 & 2

146 Reflection

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,

peace, long-suffering, gentleness,

goodness,  faith,  meekness,  self-control;

against such there is no law.

And they that are Christ's have

crucified the flesh with the affections

and lusts.

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in

the Spirit.

Let us not be desirous of vainglory,

provoking one another, envying one

another.

I will praise thee, O Lord, with my

whole heart: I will show forth thy

marvelous works.

I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will

sing praise to thy name, O thou Most

High.
Psalm 9:1 & 2

148 Reflections

Let the words of my mouth, and the
meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy
sight, O Lord, my strength, and my
redeemer.

Psalm 19:14

Reflections 149

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be
exalted among the nations, I will be exalted

in the earth.

The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of

Jacob is our refuge.

Psalm 46:10 & 11

Special Appreciation to Mr. and Mrs. Lowell

Hoyt

The Commoner Staff of 1 983-84 would like to show their special appreciation to Mrs. Rebecca Peck Hoyt for all her hard
work and dedication to the staff. We would also like to congratulate her on her recent marriage to Mr. Lowell Hoyt. We hope
the future holds many years of happiness for the both of them. Because of this we dedicate this 1983-84 yearbook to her.

Dedication 151

/  will  lift  up  my  eyes  to  the  mountains;
From whence shall my help come?

My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.

He  will  not  allow  your  foot  to  slip;
He who keeps you will not slumber.

Behold, He who keeps Israel
Will neither slumber nor sleep.

The  Lord  is  your  keeper;

The Lord is your shade on your right hand.

The sun will not smite you by day,
Nor the moon by night.

The  Lord  will  protect  you  from  all  evil;
He will keep your soul.

The Lord will guard your going out

and your coming in
From this time forth and forever.

Psalm 121:1-8 (NA.S.V.)
