JOHN FRIKDRICH & BRO.

INTRODUCTORY.

r7*STABLISHED in 1883, the year 1917 is the 34th of constantly and
increasingly satisfactory existence of our house. Satisfactory in
more than one way; to do more business every year is of paramount
importance; to add to that an ever increasing- circle of business friends,
is, however, to us of vastly greater value. That we have succeeded in
doing this is because our motto has been ever to guarantee perfect
satisfaction with every article we sell.

This catalogue is issued at a time when our line of business is ad-
versely affected through the entire absence of supplies from our regu-
lar sources. Up to the year 1914, it can safely be said that 80% of the
goods sold by musical instrument dealers, especially in the stringed
instrument line, originated in Germany. This source of supply has
temporarily ceased.

From France also, where formerly considerable goods were made in
this line, importations have been very small, and the advanced costs
and large transportation charges have made for greatly advanced prices.

At the time we issue this catalogue, the cheaper grades of violins
and bows are being obtained from Japan. This is a new departure, and
we supply orders for these goods, reserving however the privilege of
disclaiming any responsibility as to whether or not they will prove
satisfactory.

We assure our patrons of our very best care in selecting violins
and bows, and should matters adjust themselves so that we can again
offer goods as formerly, we will do so, and shall at all times make our
charges at the lowest rates possible.

Thanking our friends and patrons for their many favors, and hop-
ing for a continuation of their patronage, we are

Faithfully,

COMPLETE VIOLIN OUTFITS

With the view of meeting the demands of persons to whom the
selection of violin, bow and case might be confusing, we supply com-
plete outfits, consisting of instrument, bow and case, of correspond-
ing grades. These outfits are assembled by us with care, and can be
depended upon as offering, at the various prices, very good value.

We can furnish the full sized outfits at all prices, but it is usual
in buying a higher grade than $30.00, that the purchaser desires to
select bow and case, of which we can show a very large assortment.

Our long experience in selecting outfits for customers, assures
them of obtaining satisfactory violins, which we always accept as
part payment toward better ones, should the buyer desire such at a
later time. Thus the purchase of a violin from us, is simply a step
toward getting a better one, as it can be turned in at any time in ex-
change at approximately the price paid us, as so much cash toward
the payment of a higher grade.

In sending out these outfits, the violins are properly strung with
good strings, the bridges are correctly fitted, sound post adjusted,
chin rest fitted and the bows put in playing order.

When ordering complete outfits, state price to be paid, age of the
child (when small size outfits are wanted), and if any preference as
to color of the violin.

Cheaper outfits than ours can be obtained, but as we sell violins
to be used for playing, and not toys, we do not offer any which we
do not think suitable for practical use.

IMPORTED

VIOLINS, VIOLAS AND
VIOLONCELLOS

THE instruments described under this heading represent all the
skill and judgment which our knowledge as Practical Makers
has enabled us to devote to their selection, from an almost
innumerable variety of specimens. Therefore we do not hesitate to
claim that they are in every essential detail, the very best in their
several grades manufactured.

Imported instruments cannot be used as they leave the foreign
workshop, ample time must be given them to make them suitable for
use in our climate.

After reasonable time they are regulated and adjusted by us,
supplied with proper bridge, sound post and strings, hence we can
guarantee the instruments purchased from us to be perfect in every
detail.

SMALL SIZE VIOLINS

We carry a number of different grades of %, ^, ^ and ^ violins
in stock, ranging in price from $5-00 to $50-00- These small violins
we are prepared to accept as part payment for larger sizes as the
student grows, and when in good condition, we make allowance of
approximately what the violin cost, deducting a nominal sum neces-
sary to again put the instrument in salable condition.

NEW YORK

JOHN FRIEDRICH & BRO.

FULL SIZE VIOLINS

la beginner's violins, we can offer very well made instruments
at $5-00. $6-00, $8-00 and $10-00. These violins are correctly copied
after the Stradivarius model, are handsome in appearance, and the
tone quality, considering the modest cost, is surprisingly good.

Better grades of violins at $15-00 (Nos. 11 to 15), $20.00 (No. 21)
and $25-00 (No. 22) are of high grade foreign work, every instrument
carefully and properly constructed, of well seasoned, handsome wood
and varnished with superior grade of varnish of good texture. These
violins are suitable for advanced students.

We highly recommend the following grades of violins and fully
guarantee them as the best in their line. The wood used in these in-
struments is well seasoned, the workmanship excellent. For a me-
dium priced violin, to serve orchestral purposes, these instruments
are unexcelled in their various grades. Their popularity makes it
necessary for us always to carry a large and complete stock, allowing
a variety of choice of different tone qualities. They are made by ex-
perienced violin makers, and each instrument represents the skill of
a known maker — they are not the class of instruments which come
under the head of "factory made."

High grade instruments at $30 00 (No. 23), $40 00 (No. 24) and
$50- 00 (No. 25), compare very favorably with old violins costing twice
the amount. The materials entering into their construction are most
carefully selected, and the workmanship is of a very superior grade.

Our "Artist" violins at $75.00 (No. 28), $100-00 (No. 30), $125-00
(No. 31) and $150.00 (No. 32) leave nothing to be desired in point of
material, workmanship or finish. In tone they are most satisfactory
in every way, responsive and even on all strings, and the fact that
many of our customers prefer them to old violins of several times
their cost, is ample proof of the fact that they are suitable for all
classes of work, whether orchestral, ensemble or solo.

MUTE OR PRACTICE VIOLINS

These skeleton violins are very useful for practicing where it is
desired not to disturb. occupants of same or adjoining rooms. They
produce just enough sound to be audible to the user, and their tone
does not carry far. Invaluable for travelling violinists for use in
hotels, etc.

We have them in two models, one having a frame shaped like the
outline of a violin, the other being simply a strong centre piece with
end boxes to conform to violin shape at either end. Price $10-00 each.

VIOLAS

Our stock of Violas embraces instruments of varying size, some
hardly larger than a violin, up to instruments of very long measure-
ment. For general purposes we advise the use of medium sized
violas; small violas do not possess proper tone quality, but are pre-
ferred by many players who have to change frequently from violin
to viola playing. The violas of medium size have good tenor quality
of tone and are not too long in measurement to greatly affect a violin
player's hand. Only for such as play viola continually do we recom-
mend the large size.

We can furnish good new Violas at as low as $10-00, and usually
have them up to about $75-00.

VIOLONCELLOS

We have the small sizes, in half and three-quarter for children,
at from about $25-00 and upward.

Full size instruments we supply only in the better grades, at
from about $30-00 and upward, having in stock always finely made
cellos up to about $200-00-

A cheap cello is a bad investm ent ; if not properly made, it can-
not have a good tone, and as inferior wood and work shows up more
plainly in a cello than in a violin, a low priced cello is a source of
continual annoyance, constantly in need of repair, and really is more
expensive than an instrument which costs a little more money but is
properly constructed of good material.

FRIEDRICH

VIOLINS, VIOLAS and VIOLONCELLOS

THE largely increasing- demand for high class stringed instruments
is fast taking up the existing supply of fine old violins. Proof of
this is easily found in the tremendous advance in the price of all
old instruments.

The rare productions of the great Luthiers, representing the choicest
handiwork of by-gone days, are becoming so scarce, that only a person
of means can even think of becoming the owner of such instruments.
They are so cherished by their fortunate possessors, that a genuine
specimen now becomes a rare article, and when such appear on the
market for sale, they are eagerly purchased.

Moveover, the great majority of old instruments now offered for sale
are not the perfect specimens they should be, age, and the accidents of
titne, contributing alike to the diminishing number, aud it is a most
important point, when buying an old instrument, to see that it is in
good state of preservation, as worm-eaten, much repaired instruments
are highly unsatisfactory, not only in tone quality, but in the constant
repairs they need.

Thus it is that the violin world is confronted with the necessity of
depending on the products of present-day art to meet its growing needs.
In this connection we venture to suggest that, while instruments good
at the outset will improve with age — with use, assured!}-- mere age will
never transform a poor instrument into a good one.

If constructed in violation to the fundamental principles of the art,
with faulty form, poor wood and common varnish, an instrument will
ever remain defective. The masterpieces of Amati, Stradivari and
Guarneri, on the other hand, were good the day they were finished.

The same ma'y be said of the FRIEDRICH instruments — prominent
soloists, in fact, are to-day evoking such tones from them as to deceive
the ears of the most ardent "old violin" connoisseurs.

Thirty years of devotion to the highest ideals place us in the posi-
tion to make without hesitation the claim that the instruments of our
make are unrivalled in every detail of construction.

Compare the prices of our instruments with the prices of old in-
struments of a corresponding grade of excellence.

The FRIEDRICH Violin or Viola, $200.00 and upwards.
The FRIEDRICH Violoncello, $350.00 and upwards.

OUR MODELS.

Recognizing- the perfection, as regards both musical qualities and
artistic beauty, to which the old Italian makers brought the art of
violin-making-, we have endeavored to model our instruments after the
best originals of NICOLAS AMATI, ANTONIUS STRADIVARIUS,
JOSEPH GUARNKRIUS and PAOLO MAGGINI, as illustrated.

OUR VARNISH.

We justly pride ourselves upon the preparation and application of
this very important attribute. Our varnish possesses all ot those char-
acteristics which distinguish that of the old masters. It is transparent,
strongly adhesive to the wood, soft in its consistency, and has great
brilliancy of surface. When it is worn, either naturally or by artificial
means, it reproduces the brilliant coloring, as well as the fire-like ra-
diance which so adorns the world-famed Cremonese instruments.

THE WOOD WE USE.

The wood used in our instruments possesses those remarkable tonal
qualities which give to the instruments made from it, the rare sonor-
ousness— including the pure, soft, full, far-carrying and sympathetic
tone— for which the old Italian instruments are celebrated, and for
which they are so deservedly esteemed.

GENUINE OLD MASTER
VIOLINS, VIOLAS AND VIOLONCELLOS

We maintain one of the largest and choicest assortments of original old violins
in America. Periodically we issue catalogues describing our collection, but it is
hardly necessary to state, there being but one of each kind, a list of old violins
must necessarily be incomplete. Instruments are constantly being sold, and new
ones added to our stock, so that the most satisfactory way to obtain a correct idea
of what we have to offer at a certain price, 'is to write us giving some idea of the
amount intended to be spent for an old violin, and we can then send an exact list
of what we have at approximately such figure.

Our prices are much lower than usual ; we ask no fancy prices, and we have
many letters from customers stating their entire satisfaction with instruments
selected by us.

Rare old Italian Violins are becoming very scarce. Many instruments of in-
ferior make are being offered for sale under names of good makers, and intending
buyers cannot be too careful in purchasing. There is no greater disappointment
to a violinist than to have a violin which is highly prized as a rare make, and find
out that it is not as represented. Many violins are sent to us from all parts of the
country for our expert opinion ; for this service we charge from $5.00 to $25.00 and
it is well worth it to the owner of an old violin to know what he possesses.

We make no guarantee until we are fully justified in so doing, and such in-
struments as we sell with accompanying guarantee as to the make are as stated,
and we vouch for their authenticity. Our reputation has been made through fair
and honest dealing, and under no circumstances do we stoop to use fictitious
names to further the sales of our violins. Nor do we use the common practice of
supplying violins sold by us with "history." We have read so many fancy tales,
containing no truth, that we are averse to give any details as to previous owner-
ship excepting in the case of such violins as Stradivari, Amati or Guarnerius,
where such data is available.

Besides our fine collection of rare Italian masterpieces, we have at all times a
fine assortment of old German, French and English violins, which possess intrin-
sic merit as regards tone and finish. These are very desirable instruments for
persons who wish to confine themselves to the investment of a moderate amount.
All of our old violins are put into perfect condition before we offer them for sale,
and our prices are in all cases as low as we can consistently afford to make them.

VIOLIN BOWS

We refrain from listing our stock of violin bows by numbers, as
formerly, for the reason that our stock is at the present time such
that we cannot very well offer standard grades of bows as known to
the trade previous to the European war. This applies also to the
YZ and 24 sizes.

In the lower priced grades we offer the best the market affords,
and can furnish bows at from $1-50 upward. These bows are nicely
finished, but we do not offer any guarantee covering them.

At from about $3 00 upward we can furnish a much better bow,
with full lined frog, etc We can supply various grades at $4.00,
$5 00, $6-00, $7-50 and $10 00 We also have a fine line of pure silver
mounted bows at $15-00 and $18 00, of very fine workmanship.

Our stock of high grade bows is unequalled, and embraces speci-
mens of the work of the most celebrated bow makers, including such
well known men as Nurnberger, Pfretschner, Prell, Lamy, Sartory,
Hill, Hart, etc. These bows sell at from $20-00 upward.

We have on hand at all times a very fine collection of genuine
old bows by celebrated makers, such as Voirin, Vuillaume, Pecatte,
Henry, Dodd, Tubbs, Bausch, Weichold, etc. We have also a num-
ber of fine old bows, not bearing the names of the makers, which we
can sell at from about $15 00 upward.

Our assortment of gold mounted bows is most complete and in-
cludes all styles, from plain frogs with simple gold mountings to the
most elaborately mounted tortoise shell frogs, and in price they
range from $25-00 upward.

VIOLA AND CELLO BOWS

We have a good stock of viola and cello bows at from about $5-00
upward, and will gladly submit descriptions and prices on demand.

BOW REPAIRING AND BOW TRIMMINGS

Rehairing and repairing bows is a delicate operation, and re-
quires skill. Our shop is constantly busy with the work of keeping
tho bows of resident and visiting violinists in order, and we receive
them by mail and express from all parts of the country. In sending
bows to us, great care should be taken that they are properly and
strongly packed, so that they are not damaged in transit. Many
good bows are broken through careless packing ; the bow should be
well wrapped with soft paper, and enclosed in a wooden box strong
enough that it cannot be broken through rough handling, and most
particularly must they be so packed inside the box that they cannot
move, otherwise, when the packing box is thrown end first, the jolt
will invariably crack or break off entirely, the head of the bow.

We use the finest grades of assorted hair only, and our charge

REPAIRING DEPARTMENT

This department forms a prominent branch of our business. It
is under the personal supervision of Mr. John Friedrich, who brings
to his responsible position the advantages of a systematic education
in all the details of his art, to which is added all the experience that
has come through the repairing and reconstructing of the many rare
old masterpieces which were intrusted to us by leading artists and
amateurs

Delicate and subtle is the mechanism of the violin, and while the
work of the Cremona Masters attained an unsurpassable perfection,
the hand of time, the accidents of wear and use, and the exigencies of
modern music, demand an experienced discrimination and a trained
hand in order to restore the qualities which have made the old Italian
masters pre-eminent.

Estimates for repairing given on application. Our prices are as
low as is consistent with high class work.

corduroy covering, and button onto the end knob of violin
with a leather strip ; at the other end of the pad a rubber
band is inserted which slips over the corner of the violin,
thus holding the pad securely in same position. A very
useful and practical invention. No metal parts ; will never
buzz nor rattle, each ..... ........................

The "Becker" combined chin and shoulder rest, illustrated
above, is a very practical and convenient contrivance, and
is extensively used, each. . ...... ........

The "Locke" patent shoulder-rest attachment is a metal con-
trivance which can be used in conjunction with any two-
bar chin rest. One part, consisting of the arm to hold the
shoulder rest is fastened under the chin rest, and the other
part, slips on this arm. Very firm and rigid if properly
fitted to the violin, each. .

FINEST ROSIN

FOR

VIOLIN, VIOLA and VIOLONCELLO

SPECIALLY PREPARED FOR

JOHN FRIEDRICH & BRO.

This preparation is a new departure in the manufacture of the
most important auxiliary of the violinist. It is made from the dis-
tillate of the Rosin obtained from the famous yellow pine tree of the
States of North Carolina and Georgia. To this is added a separate
chemical gum which prevents the Rosin from becoming hardened in
the course of time, as when hard it is more or less devoid of that
biting quality, so essential to the production of a full and even tone.
This rosin has special advantages over the best foreign and domestic
products, which may be enumerated as follows: —

1. The Rosin is used only sparingly, one rub up and down being
sufficient to produce best results.

2. The Rosin will not crack easily when dropped.

3. In using, little dust is formed and it will not adhere to the
fingers of the player.

4. By continuous use, the surface will always wear off flat and
even ; no grooves, so detrimental to the hair of the bow, being formed.

Price per cake, 25 cents, postage free. Price per dozen, $2.40.

STRINGS FOR VIOLIN

Good strings are most essential for good tone production. An ordinary violin,
properly strung with true strings of right proportions, will often produce a better
tone than a fine instrument strung with false strings of improper thickness. Our aim
has been always to have in stock the finest products of the various string factories.

The strings listed below are the best of their various grades, and will be found
to give very good satisfaction as regards durability and tone.

GENUINE ITALIAN VIOLIN STRINGS

For more than thirty years we have carried in stock only the highest grades of
Italian strings, known for their superiority and used by artists throughout the
world. The practice of calling strings by fancy names, in general use by most
dealers, we do not follow, but sell the strings only by their real names. The idea
of using distinctive names is for the purpose of conveying the impression of special
manufacture or peculiar quality or merit. We guarantee our customers that the
strings handled by us, and which we offer for sale, are the best quality obtainable,

PATENT WIRE E STRING ATTACHMENT

— -, This ingenious invention

is fastened into the E string
hole of the tail piece, and
the loop end of wire E
string put in notch provided
for that purpose. It allows
the wire E string to be
tuned to minutest difference
in pitch, which is almost
impossible when only the
peg is depended upon for
tuning. 30 cents each.

(To attach, remove sec-
tions A and B inserting the
arm from which they are
taken from the lower side
of tail piece. Fasten by
screwing on B. Replace
section A and after placing
the loop wire E on hinged
lever C, tune by turning
screw A in or out.)

A BOOK WHICH SHOULD BE IN EVERY
MUSIC LOVER'S LIBRARY

o4 WORK OF PARAMOUNT INTEREST TO
TEACHERS and STUDENTS OF MUSIC, VIOLIN and PIANO

:' Shall I go to Europe to Study?"

Written by the world renowned Violinist
FRANZ WILCZEK

Soloist with Boston, New York, Chicago, Cincinnati, St. Louis,
Los Angeles and other Symphony Orchestras.

It entirely exposes the unscrupulous practices of Foreigners who
await each season's "crop" of American students and is worth many
times its cost, whether a European course of study is contemplated
or not. It is, in fact, a recommendation for students to stay in
America, where the best of instruction can be had without the pit-
falls and temptations to which young- and inexperienced folks are
subject on the other side of the Atlantic.

This brochure fully covers the question put by its (/itie in the
following chapters :

A word from the publisher -Introduction— Advantages of Music —
Preliminaries to the "Dash for Europe"— Approximate expenses of
the trip— About Hotels and Boarding Places (Pensions)— Facts to be
considered before choice of teacher is made— About teaching— The
manufacture of a European Reputation— How an American Concert
Tour is arranged— The joys of "Guardian Angels"— Conclusion.
